I'm a fan! I do many animal commissioned portraits, but someone wants me to do their portrait and their husband from a photo. I'm scared to death! Your instruction is helping me a LOT! I'm intimidated but excited at the same time!

Hi artistsnetwork, thanks so much for uploading this! I've worked with pastels before (just drew a very simple picture of flowers that l created myself) they were definitely different to work with, but l had fun! :)

Hi soulcomfort1, he uses a variety of pastels from different brands and soft and hard. I know it's not exactly a solid answer, but most of our pastel artists say to try some out and find what works best for you.

yeah looking at the pastels again, I can tell that the cylindrical shapes ones are Unison and the square ones are Terry Ludwig. Hard Pastels could be NuPastels

Hard pastels are definitely NuPastels, he mentions in another video on his KZfaq channel that he uses only that brand of hard pastel.

I just wanted to say, I am 12 years old. I absolutely love painting with arcylic, watercolour and pastels. I just wanted to say that I watch every single one of your videos and I love them. I just was wondering where should I move on from. I have showed my art teachers at school and they have set me GCSE tasks and I have to go in a classroom with year 10's. How should I move on?

I watched your full video on artistnetworktv and I have a question. Is there an easy way to determine which skin type your model has or does it not matter if one uses your technique in selecting the pastels?

It looks as if some of Alain's pastels are the Unison brand. These are beautiful soft pastels to work with and I believe they are hand made in England. Ann in Victor Harbor, South Australia.

I think I figured out why I had so much trouble painting a portrait with pastels... I don't have any of those colors ... although my starter kit had 36 colors, coming from oil painting, i naturally tried to mix colors and create the flesh tones i needed... it ddidn't work and the paints greyed out... i quickly lost my lines and the face was distorted... can you create flesh tones with a starter kit, if you don't have the color in your palette... can you create your own palette with a few colors?

+Mark A You can try it, but is hard and nonsense. It is better to buy one by one the tones you need more often. I had the same problem and i finally bought some amazing colors . also brands of pastel and paper are important. for 12$ you can change drastically your palette. 6 colors (skin colors) could make the difference. try to buy darker browns and more brighter tones for skin. look for charts or go directly to your shop. Rembrandt brand is good, sennelier and schmincke are softer more creamy with very good size. probe them all as you can afford them

Wouldn't Asian skin tones fall between olive & perhaps a light brown? Or, what do you think? Also, Native American skin tones vary widely from light to dark, depending on region, for instance North Eastern Woodland tribes may be lighter tone than Southwest Desert tribes. Many people don't realize that Native Americans were referred to as "Red Skins" related to their use of Vermillion powdered pigment. Although, like any other peoples, it was possible for excess sun exposure to "redden" their skin tone, somewhat. Well, that's your Native anthro briefing for the day, 😄 Apologies for rambling. Love your videos. ThanX muchO.

Alain recommends a variety of hard and soft pastels in assorted warm and cool colors. He doesn't mention particular colors, but rather warm brown or cool, gray brown for instance.

French-origin American, but he can't speak French at all so he mispronounces all French brand names in his videos (Sennelier, Girault, Canson Mi Teintes, etc.).

Where do these 6 skin types originate from? What is "Naturally Brown Skin" ?? Is there a "Naturally White Skin "? He places primary blue in the wrong spot on the color wheel. He states, ''The primary colors....cannot be mixed with any other colors." Of course they can be mixed with any other colors! What he means is that no mixture of other colors can make the 3 primaries. He explains that the face is divided into thirds. Top, Middle, Bottom. I quote: "The top zone is a warmer zone. The middle has a lot more red. And the third often neutralizes. If the middle zone has a lot more red, how can it be said that the top zone "is a warmer zone'? Wouldn't an area that has the most red be the warmest? And, what does he mean when he says the third zone 'neutralizes' ? Neutralizes what?? " On men..the bottom third will go almost blue because of the beard." Unless the man has white or blond hair !! He refers to the middle as the neutral zone when he compares a piece of chalk to the girl's face in shadow. But I thought he said that the neutral zone was the bottom third of the face.
