When I coached hs bowling, I dealt with a lot of parents and other "experts" who wanted their kids to "slow down". I never spoke of slowing down, nor speeding up. What I focused on was teaching them to own their pace. In the back of my mind, the faster the pace the better, because of what you mentioned. If they could learn proper mechanics and sound foot work, AND incorporate a quicker tempo, I thought that was ideal. "Slowing down" can lead to deceleration at the point of release, swing and feet being out of synchronization, etc etc. More bad than good, in my estimation. Personally, coaching attempts to make me "slow down" lead to over thinking, timing issues and a lot of frustration. Picking up the tempo makes the game feel more athletic and less mental, which it should be less mental, once you are executing the shot.

I urge you to remember the part about the revs. If you are wanting a ball to hook more or hook the same as it does at a lower speed you MUST also increase the revs. I am not saying speed is not one of the biggest factors but not the only factor. If you have a low rev rate and roll a 18 mph ball you are not going to have a lot of snap. If you are doing good to get your ball to the pocket now and always hitting light then the people saying slow the ball down might just be right. I see 3 things in bowling that is vital besides accuracy and consistency. That is matching YOUR "speed", to Your "rev rate" and your Your "ball surface" to the lane condition. Unless you are a straight bowler then ball speed and Accuracy is it. Just like coach stated. Lots of RPM and low speed means lots of hook and hitting them 7 pins. But lots speed and low revs means smaller hook. The two also needs to match up to the surface of your ball and too the lane condition. So even though speed is what gives the most pin action. It does little good to throw a smoking hot ball that does not turn and hit the pocket on the 17th 1/2 board at roughly a 6 degree angle. As coach always says. You might as well throw a house ball.

@@jvmiller1995 Absolutely. The ONLY content creator in this entire space that I EVER hear talking about this is JR Raymond. The late great Mo Pinel touched on it but he was more concerned about equipment. You MUST be matched up in your speed and RPMs and have the right ball in your hand in order to decisively succeed at this sport. And NO, that DOES NOT mean 230+ Average. Getting real sick of bowlers saying how awesome they are with their cute little 230+ average then can't even hit the cut number at a sweeper that has like two PBA regional bowlers in it. A 230+ average means you're good at the house you bowl at. ANYONE with today's equipment can yield a 230+ average if they just have fundamentals down and make a nice home out of the place they bowl every week. It means being able to RELIABLY cash in ANY tournament you go to; cashing or making match play at a center you have never bowled at on a pattern you have never bowled on WITHOUT the convenience of ball reps etc is what makes you DECISIVELY good at this sport.

@@SirJoelsuf1 I agree. House shots do make the game much easier. If you really want to test yourself join a sport shot league or some sweepers on sport shots. It will humble you. 😂🤣 This game you really do have to match RPM to Ball speed. To much speed not enough RPM will fit Flat and not carry the 5 pin or notlet the ball spit the 8 and 9 pin.. Bowing is about angles. Getting the ball at the right angle to bounce pins into each other at the right angles. I am a tweener and actually bowl best most the time between 13.5 to 14.5 mph. But it does vary from ball to ball as well as lane condition. But I do have much respect for coch Art. He has helped me with my game a whole lot, but so has Jr 'Raymond and several others. I laid out of bowling close to 15 years. I just got back into it last fall league. Thanks greatly to KZfaq, better equipment, better patterns and actually building a 9 ball arsenal I have been bowling the best I ever had. I have had my fist 2 300 games in that time and my second one was on a 46 foot flat sports pattern this summer that I put 17 in a row. Lots of practice too as I was bowling about 120 games a month at one point. I certainly am not in better shape than I was 15 years ago either. November I am getting a hip replaced and after I get a solid foundation under me I am going to blow last years season out of the water. Out of everything I have done I think having a real arsenals and not 2 balls have gave me the most advantage. Without a doubt I feel the biggest key is figuring out what ball matches up with the lane best and gives you the most miss room and the widest shot.

I agree with Art. Speed is the key to modern bowling. Back in the 1980s you had to throttle back the speed to get hook. Today you can buy as much hook as you want in the pro shop. So now you have to throw it fast enough to not be a "7 pin king" (new expression for me). But I don't walk faster to get more ball speed, I swing harder.

Speed stops the revs from burning out, as you want the ball to have max revs at hook phase to create a bigger angle the bigger angle creates area and rotation of ball especially if it has slight axis tilt as it enters the pins really helps to add rotation to the pins creating messangers etc.

7 pin king is about right after i figured out how to do the "yo-yo" thing. everything i own goes straight into the left gutter. ironically the proton runs out of energy early and doesn't hook as much as my other stuff. i was already of the opinion speed made the most impact on getting strikes. you can miss the head pin entirely and still strike if the pins are bouncing around like ping pong balls. to smash that much energy into the pins you need speed and weight.

64 this year. Back to bowling (finally found a league that fits my work schedule). Mph avg. only 13-14. Leaving lots of 10 and 5-10. Practice the flat table drill a lot. When I shoot spares with dad's old rubber ball (in excellent condition) I can get 16-18 mph. Also, when I go back to the way he taught me in '68 (Hardwick-Full Roller style) I can go 16-18 mph and if my accuracy is good the rubber ball is a pin crusher and I can strike more than with reactive. Would a move to a straigter ball (old school) and urethane be something to consider? Thanks!

Accuracy can be affected by lane topography and transition, but speed not so much. So unless you can read every lane perfectly from frame to frame, you're not hitting perfect pocket every shot. Speed can help you in frames where accuracy is off. So yes, it’s better to be “lucky” if it means you’re knocking more pins down

2:10 I'd love an explanation of why this is. I have a friend who I'm trying to explain how and why he has a higher average ball speed even though we both have about the same launch speed. I figured it had to do with my track being much lower than his, but he does also have a higher rev rate, so maybe it's a combination of factors.

Good as this was, I have a feeling a lot of bowlers are going to use this as a rationalization to go "rocket to the pocket." Then they'll leave 5-7-10 variation after 5-7-10 variation and get upset. I'd like to present a counterargument that the majority of bowlers are throwing their ball way too hard for it to recover. ESPECIALLY given the extremely common "spin to win" release that pretty much 85% of league bowlers have. I for one used to throw it 17-18MPH (at the breakpoint, about 23 or so MPH off my hand) with a piss poor RPM rate of 200 at most (300 if I spun it). Getting me to throw it harder wasn't going to work in this case, and I was FORCED to slow down a couple years ago when I sustained a bicep tendon injury. All of a sudden I couldn't throw my 16lb ball so hard anymore. So I went to my 15lb stuff, slowed down to a little under 14MPH (for the time being since I was still hurt) and bam, 700 set. WHILE injured. Ever since that time, I ditched my 16lb ball (it cracked anyways), my 15lb stuff, and now only throw 14lb stuff. And I keep the speed down under 15 AT ALL TIMES unless the lanes are sandpaper. And now my average is back up to 205 when it was down to 195 for two seasons straight. Yeah if your ball speed is like 12-13MPH you probably need to throw it harder. OR learn to "far loft" (get the ball about 2-3'' in the air and loft it to the arrows, that works A LOT for RPM dominant bowlers. But for every one bowler I see who has that issue, I see at least 9 more who have the reverse issue, which is throwing it too hard.

@SirJoelsuf1
@SirJoelsuf1 Жыл бұрын
@@drwisdom1 Yes, 5-7-10 itself is rare. It's variations? 5-7? 5-10? Not so much if you are speed dominant. During my 18MPH >200RPM phase, I left at least one 5-7-10 variation per night at league. From 2005-2006 all the way until I started significantly slowing down last year. Also, 7-10 to me is NOT a variation of the 5-7-10 since the ball still drove enough to get the 5 out. 7-10 is a bad rack in most cases. Now the 8-10 is a different animal and that's ANOTHER split I would leave once per set because I threw it too damn hard.

Depends what you call "speed dominant/rev challenged." If you're throwing it over 15 MPH (at the breakpoint, not at launch) and your RPMs are under 350, then yeah, you're speed dominant/rev challenged and probably need to slow down. But if you are throwing it under 14MPH or still have under 350 RPMs then you're pretty much matched up and it's all about hitting what you're supposed to look at and having the right ball in your hands at that point. That's where I'm at now after getting coaching from JR Raymond and Darren Tang. Both told me the following: 1) My timing was super late and that's why my ball was skidding. Super late timing + Low RPMs = Skid city. High RPM bowlers (450+) can get away with late timing. Cuz they want their ball to hold anyways. NO ONE can get away with early timing since the ball will burn up, you'll double dribble, etc etc etc. Low RPM bowlers (under 350) MUST have nearly perfect timing because hitting power is much more sensitive when you don't have a lot of angle. 2) I was spinning the ball. Lifelong struggle of mine. When I had my coaching session with JR my tilt was a horrifyingly bad 100 degrees. My hand was completely on top of the equator. During my session with Darren it was much better but still not good enough to bowl at a high level: 30 or so degrees, so right AT the equator. 3) I was throwing it too hard for it to recover properly (during the JR session). Yeah I would hit the pocket but would leave 5s, 7s, and 10s all the time since my ball was going from skid to hook too late. Too much deflection. Worked on that and after the Tang session he said I was much more matched up. When Art gets to my throw during his Analyze Dis series, I'm likely going to hear similar. Or at least that's I think so. Could be wrong, I'm really curious to hear what he has to say.
@SirJoelsuf1

@@ArtOfBowling Makes sense Art, but as a former college bowler I'd argue that the college bowling scene is much different than other competitions in this sport. In college bowling if you can't throw it hard on the sandpaper that the lanes eventually turn into then you're sunk. And yeah, most lady bowlers are actually RPM dominant despite only getting 300 RPM at most on the ball.

Using ur 3 Keys, should ball be above waste or below before taking the first step?
@bowlingxp8345
@bowlingxp8345 Жыл бұрын
Speed indeed increases probability of striking. As do all 3 of these though. No one knows which does it more. The thing to distinguish is, which of the 3 is mostly lacking to the average player ! What is the average speed of a bowler? What is the average RPM? The average bowler is probably lacking more RPM than speed. The pros already have RPM, and because of that, those with more speed (or those who can modify it) have more success. So more speed is a key if you have enough RPM. If not, then more speed is probably a problem. Several 2-handers have less average speed, yet their RPM gives them more room for error AND more luck (pin action). Why? Because they manage the ball phases with layouts and surface. Speed is hard to manage and to increase (without messing up timing). A true key is how to increase and decrease speed without picking up bad habits, without muscling, and without disrupting the athlete's timing. Bottom line : You can never have "too much accuracy", and very rarely have "too high RPM". But you can easily/frequently have "too much speed", so of the 3 it is the only one which can also be a "problem". If we made a chart with the Y axis having increasing values of speed, and the X axis, increasing benefits, the progression line would not be straight. Meaning that from a certain speed and above, we would see little to zero benefits, even negative. Speed is energy, so its weight on ball motion can be a double edged sword. Now if we are talking about small increases of speed, then it is almost always a pure benefit. Is it more than RPM increase? Depends. For sure it is not as clear cut and dry as it appears.

17 -18 is not that fast your key is going to be either using aggressive enough bowling balls, developing more rev rate or learning how to get deeper in the pocket
@bcquon
@bcquon Жыл бұрын
Couldn’t disagree more. Too much speed and not enough revs will cause the ball to bounce off the head pin (unless your accuracy is perfect). The revs allow it to drive through the 8 and 9, even when accuracy isn’t perfect. High speed and low revs means your margin for error for accuracy is lower, you really need to hit high flush to strike. Speed provides more messengers, but that’s it. Your speed and rev rate should match. Power bowlers have higher speed to give them better control over their higher revs. There’s a video of Osku Palerma launching the ball as fast as he can at the head pin, but he states something like “you’d think that would strike every time, but it rarely does.” In reality, the ball bounces off the head pin and gives bad pin action. There’s a reason pro bowlers are much more likely to adjust their speed before their rev rate. If speed were more important, they’d keep it fast and adjust their rev rate for conditions, but that doesn’t happen. Rev rate and accuracy are the keys. Speed just helps control rev rate and provide more accuracy.
@peteg475
@peteg475 Жыл бұрын
Nobody is suggesting doing what Palermaa did in that example - you still need to be near the pocket. It's not that revs are meaningless and speed is everything. It's just that high speed and more deficient revs (though not perfectly ideal) still has a chance to strike. Deficient speed and too much revs is going into the left gutter. Yes, ideally you want them to match perfectly. But TOO slow and you're costing yourself pins on your average with lack of pin action.

Both of you are going to extremes. It's all about being MATCHED. If you are not matched, then your margin for error is super low anyways no matter how you slice it. If your RPMs are under 350 and ball speed (at the breakpoint) is anywhere higher than 15MPH, you aren't matched up. You're RPM challenged and likely speed dominant. The ball will deflect if you go light, resulting in 2s (if your timing was super early), 5s (If you used a lot of surface and DON'T loft it), 7s (If you used a lot of surface and DID loft it), and 10s (If your RPM rate AT THE PINS is low; happens a lot with pearl stuff). If your ball speed is anywhere under 13 (again, at the breakpoint) then you are RPM dominant no matter how many RPMs you get on the ball. The late great Mo Pinel has a short presentation on this somewhere on Radical's channel. Your ball will get into a roll way too early (ESPECIALLY if your timing is early which is often the case for these kinds of bowlers) and you're likely to leave big four variations and 3-6-10 variations. BUT! You'll get the 5 and 7 out more. Couple examples of this. Back before I made significant changes to my release this summer, I used to throw it 17-18MPH with an RPM rate just over 200. Would leave at least ten single pins per night at league and would leave at least one 5-7-10 variation per game. One of my teammates threw the ball with the same kind of RPMs I did but was about five MPH slower. She would leave at least one big four variation per game and at two or so 3-6-10 variations. But would carry whatever single pins I couldn't. Both of us had strike rates near the 50% mark and averaged just under 200 for different reasons. Neither of us were matched up. If my teammate sped UP to 14 and I took my ball speed DOWN to 14, we would both be somewhat more matched up.

How to get more strikes? All the comments I get have me thinking be a cheat by being a 2 handed bowler using the Purple Hammer. Learn to be a real bowler, 2 handed is cheating. All I ever hear.

Bowlers have the most selective bias of ANY "individualized" sport (tennis, golf, bowling, any other sport where the scoring is up to one individual). You're going to get salty BS like that from bowlers of ALL levels. If THOSE individuals were succeeding with the Purple Hammer, they would be the first to talk up to it. If they were getting better results 2 handed than they ever did one handed you wouldn't hear the end of it from them either. It's why I have been suggesting for about 15 years a "wild west" approach to bowling. Whatever doesn't DIRECTLY damage the lanes or pins should be allowed. This means altering the surface of you ball, throwing a ball that is too "soft" for competition, throwing it with one hand, two hands, one hand with all your fingers in it, two hands with all your fingers in it etc. If it doesn't mess up the pins, lane surfaces, ball returns, or anything other than the bowlers themselves, it should be allowed. That's my philosophy. Has been my philosophy since 2007 and will NEVER change. So keep throwing that Purple hammer two handed no matter who has issues with it. Even if I wind up bowling against you in some weird scenario down the road and you happen to beat me throwing it, you won't hear me telling you to be a real bowler. You won't hear me telling you that you're cheating. You WILL, however, see me extend my hand, congratulating you on a good match.

@@SirJoelsuf1 Thanks, I try to not let these comments get to me. Just this past Saturday at my youth league a parent was complaining about my form saying I shouldn't be allowed to bowl and that it was illegal. My parents stepped in and ended the issue really quickly. On the car ride my dad said that people will always hate because they can't do, best thing to do is roll the 200s and let my game speak for me. So Just like what you said!

@@TysBowlingRevolution very wise fatherly advice! my usual answer is to try it yourself to see if you can do it if you cant be quiet...you gave to be more coordinated to be a two hander...it is a much more athletic way of bowling

There's a 75 year old man in my league who throws it 9 mph. He averages around 250. Speed is not anywhere close to being as important as accuracy.

I have a guy in my league that's 80, he's the same way. I watched him roll a 300 with a house ball. Insane.

Speed makes a very strong 💪 1st place argument. If you consider the overall strategy of achieving the highest bowling score, Accuracy quietly delivers the best outcome. Arthur glad to see you feeling better and back producing the best educational content for the sport of bowling 🎳. If you ever come to Houston, Texas it would be a honor to shake your hand. I wish you the best my friend.
