One way that I was able to learn how to talk to people, back when I was very shy and anti social, was to help them feel comfortable and relaxed while we were talking, as if I had known them for many years. People, especially women, are very perceptive with regards to how confident or nervous you are due to subtle non verbal cues; but if you look at them as if they are a normal part of your life, that nervousness tends to not be so strong. Plus, it doesn't hurt to be authentically interested in them, as a person. Just my two cents.

I love this advice. Everyone else online that tries to help with this always says the same dribble; be yourself, remember that they are just as scared, don't ask to many questions, get the other person to talk about themselves, eye contact and facial expressions, blah blah blah. It's about as useful as saying "the best way to bake a potato is to use heat and then add stuff to make it interesting"; we know, and it doesn't help us to actually do it. But this advice hits the nail on the head; simple, computer-like instructions to start the ball moving. I've been trying this for a few days (both in person and texting) and I can see a good increase in my ability to keep a conversation from turning awkward, not to mention my social interactions are much more pleasant. Thank you.

Even better: marijuana. When I was working I used to hate going to office functions, especially holiday parties. One year I discovered a way to cope with them: I would arrive at the venue, smoke some MJ in my car and by the time I arrived at the party I was flying pretty high. Instead of being socially awkward I became Mr. Friendly and could talk to anyone about anything under the sun. When I felt the buzz start to wear off I would go back to my car and top it off. Worked great for me. Hey, some people drink alcohol (many times to excess) - I preferred Mary Jane.

One master of small talk from the movies is No Country for Old Men's Anton Chigurh. What a chatty Cathy.

For people who are struggling with small talk, I have your perfect solution! Go up to people and ask those weird questions, like what's the bloody meaning of life. The people who respond and play along are worth your time and the people who don't, well leave em alone. They can go engage in boring, time wasting small talk.
@aaronmt149 жыл бұрын
as embarrassing as it is for me to admit, this video is quite helpful. As an introvert (not anti-social) it's hard for me to engage in conversation with strangers about things that we both care nothing about, but the main thing i think I found helpful was that it pointed out that small talk is the only way to get the ball rolling on to more meaningful conversation, which, obviously i knew, but i guess i just needed to hear someone say it to realize just how true it is

My biggest problem is stopping small talk WITHOUT an awkward, "soo... bye". How would a man end small talk?
@RJBeee919 жыл бұрын
Step 1: "So hey! It was awesome to (meet you, talk to you, catch up with you)." Step 2 depends on the occasion. If you're bumping into someone on your lunch break or on your way to class- "...but I've gotta run to (class, work)." If you're at a party, time your exit with the opportunity to go and talk to someone else you know or with the opportunity for the person you're talking to to talk to someone they know. Works in party settings and doesn't leave anyone standing by themselves awkwardly. Also, if you'd like to talk to the person more, ask for their number. If I'm on the way to class and I bump into a girl who's a friend of a friend and we have small talk- "So it was cool talking to you, but I've gotta run to class. Are you going to (social event with mutual friends or mutual interests)?" or "What're you doing after class?" etc. It ultimately all comes down to how you carry yourself man. Dress nicely, carry yourself confidently and you shouldn't have anything to worry about.

The key is to be sincere and say honest reason why are you leaving. That puts the focus directly on you, so you take the burden off your conversation partner. Here are some exit lines that can be applied at networking events: I need to go see the exhibits. • I want to go talk to the speaker. • I’m going to circulate and meet some of the new members. • I want to see if there are any other people from my industry here today. • I must speak with the membership chairperson before she leaves. • I promised myself that I’d meet three new people before I leave this evening. • I want to meet some other potential clients this morning. • I want to get around and say hello to everyone at this meeting/party. Don't try to make any excuses when leaving, It’s important to retain your poise and state your reason for departing courteously. Source: "The Fine Art of Small Talk" by Debra Fine

you can stop small talk by letting the person finish what they are saying then saying something like "wow thats very interesting, but anyway i have to get back to my friends so i hope you enjoy the rest of your night" or something like that based on the situation you are in.

wow cant believe there are videos of how to make small talk on here. I cant believe how shy some people are. All you have to remember is no matter there achievement in life or how hot they are they are all flesh and bone just like you, and anyone who doesn't give you the time of day because they think your better then them just means there not worth the effort. Its a shame there are people that make others feel less or insecure. But if these videos help others then all for that, but really no one needs a video they just gotta know who they are. Once you define yourself as a human/ Male or female, Then its very hard for others to change that, its damn near impossible. Ive been shy for many years but what helped me is the fact I had many years of hell I had to go through alone, Not gonna discuss the details on here but it really made me look at myself differently. I know realise there is no point to being shy, there is no one I wouldn't talk to, there is not much I wouldn't do to get a laugh, Hell I wore a tiggar suit ( from pooh bear lol ) through a shopping mall just to get a few laughs. years before when I was shy I didn't like talking in public much. You can watch all the videos you want and slowly build courage sure, or u can just jump in the deep end and learn it quick. what is the worst that will happen is they say go away or no, is that really worse then being lonely? if your truly lonely then u realise that is something you don't want to live with, and other peoples opinions just don't matter. Not saying its easy its very hard, but its still harder to hate yourself or doubt yourself.

Im so far from perfect but am working on that. We all got our battles and im only trying to be a helpful voice in a dark room, Going through things alone sucks and is scary. Thank you thank you thank you. This is one of my greatest struggles and my wife is so frustrated at my fear of social settings. She can't believe that someone can be so awkward like I am. She seems to think I am intentionally antisocial but it is not true. What helped me the most is that "friendly noises" concept. I don't want to sound fake with new people but since there is very little connecting me with the new person, the initial exchanges are necessarily going to be pretty superficial. Thanks again! SUBSCRIBED!!

Wow, I watched this video a while ago and thought to myself that I’m already good at holding a conversation. This morning I went to a new church, and I was the awkward single guy that just stood there listening to others. I’ve got to practice these things. It’s hard at first, but I know once I’m successfully able to execute these tips, they’ll stick in my mind. Wow, unless you work at something, you don’t usually just have it naturally.

Great video! Social media has crippled real life interactions to say the least, so I understand why some people might find it hard to strike small talk. Awkwardness is avoided like the plague, so sometimes interaction is too big of a risk, being that there is no time cushion to think up a witty resonse as there is when replying to something online. Practice small talk guys!
@sh0werp0wer10 жыл бұрын
That is so true, man. I was chatting with this girl for weeks, we actually had a lot in common, but when we finally met in real life it was very awkward seeing as none of us knew how to small talk, but that wasn't noticable when we chatted and had time to come up with responses without it being awkward.

For me, it's simply an issue of being able to relate to conversations. My preferences in entertainment, media, interests, and even my lifestyle are often very uncommon in comparison to others. Finding that common ground to start a conversation that both sides will stay interested in is difficult for me.
