Artscroll is a Jewish publishing company and a great way to get insight to Orthodox Jewish thinking. They are what we would call “non-messianic” meaning they do not believe that Jesus is the messiah. While some Christians may immediately dismiss any of their writings because of their views, I feel this is a mistake. While of course they aren’t going to see things like we do, their thinking is a gateway to understanding how Jews (to include Jesus) think/thought. In addition to all this their books are BEAUTIFUL and look amazing on your bookshelf. They are also surprisingly affordable. Check out their website for more info. Linked below are just a few of the books I featured in this video, but look through the site to see more of their interesting stuff.

Nice to see you like them. As a practicing Jew, we usually make sure to stack the holiest one on top no matter what the size is. So in your case, the tanakh would go on top of all the other books followed by the prophets then writings. It may be something that’s annoying to do, but I am just saying that just in case you want to follow.

A very fair description of the beautiful Artscroll books. I own just the Tanach and Siddur. They are indeed amazing value and the translations can be trusted by Christians since Orthodox Jews read both Hebrew and English. I don't understand how Artscroll are able to publish books of this quality and price when other publishers sell cheap books with glued-in pages for twice the cost!

I used Artscroll for a while but donated them to an orthodox synagogue in Dallas near where I used to live. I like Koren Publishers much better. Also Koren isn’t messianic because Messianics are actually Christians. I know this because I was part of the Messianic Movement before I resigned from it and converted to Judaism.

Artscroll is not Messianic either. But I have heard a lot about Koren, I’ll have to look into it.

@@anickelsworthbiblereviews yes I’m glad Artscroll isn’t messianic. But it’s way too far on the fundamental side for me. JPS (Jewish Publication Society) has published several good commentaries on different books from the Tanakh as well as many other subject also. I use JPS for a lot of things and Koren Publishers for others. Then I resort to publishers of the Reform and Conservative Movements of Judaism for official positions from those movements. Hope you have a very good week!

They don't open backwards. Hebrew is written from right to left, the opposite of english. Even secular hebrew books open that way and so does many other languages that have Semitic origin.

This seems semantical, to the western world the book opens backward to us.

@@anickelsworthbiblereviews it’s not “backwards” that would mean it opens to the last page lol

What "denomination" is the ArtScroll siddur? Is Chabad Lubavitch cool with ArtScroll? Because I am looking for a pocket size Tehillat Hashem siddur with English or Russian annotation, but I like the black & gold cover of that ArtScroll pocket siddur.

They have their critics, and it seems the books do have some errors, and some incomplete portrayals of rabbinic figures, but as a non Jewish Christian I have found their material incredibly useful. As far as Chabad, I do not know the stance. For me they are a great resource from an Orthodox Jewish perspective.

I don't think I've ever seen books with gilding just on the top of the pages, but that is a very practical design: the top is the only side of the pages which may be visible while on a shelf and only doing the top probably helps keep costs down.

I’d say so. But I store mine sideways to avoid strain on the text block.

I was curious and looked it up: though expensive upfront, $40 a volume sounds incredibly reasonable... it's just that the Talmud isn't so short with 73 volumes. 😅

And there are two different Talmuds. Jerusalem and Babylonian. The amount of money you could spend at Artscroll is unthinkable. But it isn’t because their books are expensive, but because there are so many.
