My thoughts exactly. Watching Russian nationals is like watching a circus only much less entertaining. It has nothing to do with FS anymore, only money and power. For real athletes around the world it's a disencouraging time, I think. Why bother continuing, if it's not judged fairly?

@@praetorrus As Komrrrrrad David (Svioatoslav Andreivich Alexandreivich Ivanovich Chekparukin) Spletnikov so lovingly explained to us, Eteri's father basically thought that Eteri and her sister's didn't exist. When asked how many kids he had, he said: "I have one son." Little did he know he was underestimating a young girl who would go on to change the face of figure skating around the world. Cersei's father also underestimated Cersei's mind. That's what I was referring to.

The bullshit scores on Davis/Smokin half-assed 2000 late bom bom pow program are beyond shameful. D/S skate junior because they ARE juniors who dance like juniors. And even on that junior field, they are not the best. One single look from Anabelle Morozov has way more performance power/class/strength than whatever D/S do on ice. I hope the Russian audience keeps booing the unfair scores because they are not stupid. Putting D/S on top only because she is Eteri's daughter is like sabotaging their actual ice dance team.

I would enjoy it if you would take an in depth look at the reasons for the Russian success over the last ten years or so. What role does the state play in the early childhood training of skating? How much is financed by parents? What role do the large open tournaments play in the recruitment of young skaters into the Russian Olympic and special school programs? How have the Russians revived and increased the popularity of the sport within Russia? I think, rather than killing the sport outside of Russia, skaters like Valieva are reviving interest in the sport - at least this is my take from reading comments from non-skating fans below NBC's recent video releases. And it is these non-fans that skating needs to recruit to become truly popular again.
@TheSkatingLesson
@TheSkatingLesson 2 жыл бұрын
You have to think who is watching the videos? I do agree with your idea for a video. Unfortunately, a single country dominating isn't great for any global sport. Covid has certainly played a large role as well. Unfortunately, kids can't join learn to skate, which further kills grass roots participation. It is really tough. There are almost two years of lost kids in skating schools. Our learn to skate programs did restart recently, but with the numbers rising, one has to imagine they could be on precarious ground.

@@TheSkatingLesson I agree that one country's domination is not good for the sport in the long term, but this makes it all the more important to understand the reasons for that dominance. We shouldn't be afraid to learn from what the Russians are doing so as to improve our own performance. This doesn't mean slavishly copying their methods, but it does mean that a close examination what they are doing is warranted.

@@TheSkatingLesson I assume the ISU does the usual drug tests before competitions. If these protocols require modification, then by all means go into that. However, I doubt that the Russians are doping all the 8, 9 and 10 year olds (inside and outside Sambo 70) who are coming up in the sport. All you have to do is look at the performances of these young children to know that Russian training is doing a lot more than just doping.

While I do agree with you that sport might be gaining popularity to some extent, I would also like to note that it's becoming popular for almost the wrong reasons...a fair amount of the new following is owed to the drama, the over the top personalities, fights, the tea; atleast more so than the actual skating skills and skating technique and such other aspects and that maybe damaging to the quality of the sport itself in the long run. It all really comes down how you define success of sport....are you talking about the raw numbers, then yes; but of you're talking about pure skating joy, than not quite.

I think you're being too hard on Eteri; painting her as only a narcissist .. So what if she said those things about Zhenya and Alina. You're cherry picking snippets of comments over many years. Russians are known to be upfront (and also cynical). Zhenya and Alina were given post-skating celebrity careers and I saw them today in one big happy family on Channel 1. 40% is not unheard of. You said it yourself in another video: Eteri coordinates and provides everything on a success fee basis (vs. American girls whose parents have to pay in advance and coordinate multiple professionals by themselves). Finally, look at the Japanese and Koreans who are imitating her team's techniques. I believe she's making skating popular worldwide; not killing it.

That's not what Eteri said. She said that it's important to maintain the weight. If athlete is malnourished, she has no strength and prone to mistakes and injuries due to tiredness. If overweight- more pressure on entire body that also leads to injuries. But the worse if you're not controlling yourself and getting fat, then forcing starvation on yourself, then lose it again, getting fed, and have to lose weight again- that leads to both types of injuries.

@@praetorrus what you're saying is right, but for a decade Eteri's girls kept saying, whenever asked, that you just have to shut your mouth and not eat. They stopped saying that only after Lipnitskaya came out with her anorexia story and how she was forced to live on meal-replacement shakes. The girls stopped saying that, but this doesn't mean the methods have changed. You're telling me that Medvedeva learned a thing in Canada, but what's your explanation to an anorexic state Medvedeva arrived back to Moscow to ask Eteri for help in Autumn of 2020? We can clearly see, that she got much better and healthier shape during first half of 2021, when Zhenia was still concidering to return to competing.

Although David is an expert at adding a comedic spin on all these stories and events in Russia, the fact that 90% of all the content is about Russia shows a sorry state of affairs in the United States. I am not sure why Kamila Valieva is treated poorly by this channel. There is no doubt that she is one of the most talented skaters in modern figure skating; and her programs are pretty good. Any way you spin it, Russia has some of the best figure skaters (with the exception of men’s skating) and coaches in the world. David himself has a Russian coach. After Nathan Chen retires, who is left in the US? He is the ONLY real star the US has. Russia has many.

She has a very good toe jump, hence it's easy for her to do a quad toe. And the Salchow jump is very similar takeoff as the toe jump hence it's easier for her to do. But her weakness clearly lies in her Lutz and flip, which is so heavily prerotated she's really doing double jumps. Not only is her technique so bad, she gets no height on them. She needs to be heavily penalized for this. To say she's one of the greatest is far fetching.
