As The Blade Turns: The Kamila Valieva Doping Legal Case (Eteri Tutberidze, WADA)

Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva will find out Monday in Beijing if she can compete at the Olympics in the women's competition, which starts a day later.
The Court of Arbitration for Sport said Saturday the expedited hearing on Valieva's doping case will be held Sunday at 7:30 a.m. ET, with a decision expected shortly thereafter.
The 15-year-old skater and gold-medal favourite broke down in tears after an emotional practice session Saturday in Beijing.
Kamila Valieva's coach, Eteri Tutberidze, also gave a statement to the Russian media. I break down all the latest updates on the latest edition of 'As The Blade Turns'.

Your point about Christine and other journalists having do their research is spot on. I do think she had every right to ask them about Eteri but took it way too far by prodding her to and insisting on that she speaks in English. As an American, it's really embarrassing to see our journalists expect everyone to speak English -- as if there aren't any other languages in the world. If she really wanted to question her, she could have asked Gleb to translate, which she didn't. Instead, she kept prodding and prodding in a very harassing and bullying manner (which Christine has done to US athletes too). Completely unprofessional on her end

Christine is a self-righteous pseudo-journalist with an extremely inflated sense of her own importance, but I can actually understand her expecting Diana to speak English given that Eteri herself speaks good English, and given Diana’s name and the fact she trains in Michigan. But her hearing disability definitely should’ve been known, and the questioning shouldn’t have been so aggressive anyway. The fact everyone was wearing masks would’ve made it even more difficult for Diana to understand what was being said to her.

@@TheSkatingLesson As you've mentioned in the video, it is very possible to flush out drugs from your system using diuretics, and it's a bit hard to believe that IOC/ITA would not consider taking hair samples as a much more accurate way of testing. Unfortunately, my suspicion is many of such top athletes are using some sort of PEDs but know how to get it out of their system in time (Russia, US, China and god know how many others). The method of testing may not be simply be based on accuracy, but the messy politics behind all these that sponsers the IOC.

Absolutely. I sent info to Olympic Gold Peggy Fleming about a hair sample to the root. Holds anything up to 90 days and matches DNA. 21st century testing.

This reminds me of the tragedy that happened to Elena Mukhina who was a soviet gymnast in the late 70s. Her coach forced her to do a very dangerous tumbling pass while practicing. She was nursing a injury at the time she did the tumble and broke her neck. She became a paraplegic. I hope nothing like this happens to one of Etei's skaters.

Interesting point! I did not think of this until you mention Elena Mukhina. I am a gymnastics fan and after reading a good bit of articles on what happened what I found even more tragic is that Elena was probably not going to make the team any way placed on her placement at the national championships

My sister and I were talking about Mukhina last night. Russians espouse the narrative that she was taking too many risks without supervision. Blaming the child instead of the system and coaches.

I don't want politics to be mixed with Sport NOR geopolitical rivalry to taint sport. Kamila Valieva has NOT been drugged. All samples before and on arrival at the Beijing Olympics have returned a NEGATIVE doping result. Only that expired result from the sample from the 25th December gave a positive result to a "trace" of a banned medication substance. But the positive test result was communicated by the WADA ITA well over 25 days later than the 20 day deadline set by WADA itself and so should be dismissed since during those 45 days the sample could have easily been tampered with or got contaminated. So NO. No one in the Russian team is abusing anybody and in the Russian Skating team all athletes are clean. It is those who want to slur this champion and her team who are trying to frame her and abusing her with their lies. I find it more of an abuse the way the US staffs its Gymnasts with steroids turning them into a lump of muscle destroying their feminine beauty simply for performance sake! Just note that the US is among the top three countries with the highest number of athletes being found cheating with drugs!

@Diomede Cassar politics have always been a part of the Olympics, but that is beside the point. Having trace amounts of a heart medication is enough to make me worry. You can keep saying the same crap the media is about how she doesn't show it in her system now, but the fact it was even there AT ALL is the problem. As for abuse. Eteri has stated herself that her training camps are a circle of hell, which in my opinion no child should have to be put through for money, fame, and tainted glory of a country. No one is blaming this poor little girl, I certainly am not. I blame her coaches, doctors, parents and her country for allowing the disgusting behavior repeatedly across many competitions.

Thank you, Dave, for calling out the issue with the journalists (and one journalist in particular) harassing Diana. This made me so angry. Diana is still very young and one can understand why she wants to fit in and why she avoids addressing this issue, particularly in Russia where people with disabilities are invisible. Even Eteri mentioned in her interview that she hopes that Diana speaks about it someday because it can help other people but her daughter is clearly not ready; and this decision should be respected. (Can we send you to Beijing to cover this?)

Disagree with you about Diana’s interview. Christine Brennan (you usually call her by name, why not now?) knows a lot about figure skating and she could’ve looked up Diana’s english Wikipedia page where it clearly says that she is hard of hearing and relies on lip-reading (in Beijing everyone is masked so she can’t actually do that). Brennan is just rude and unprofessional.

it's so sad that this extremely talented child is going through this scrutiny and pressure because the adults around her are greedy, abusive, liars. My heart breaks for her, she's just a pawn to them, she deserves better. I hope that she will still have a bright future in skating. Shes one of the best in the world, she needs no drugs.

well, that's the problem..now we don't know how good she actually is. Maybe she would be more exhausted without it and make more mistakes (like the others do?). Maybe the drug allowed her to train more, do more run-through of the program and as a result, she had an advantage? That's the saddest part in it....this taint all her achievements((((

I'm not trying to be difficult or anything, but I do want to know your view on this, Dave... I completely agree that most sports journalists are not doing their due diligence, and don't possess the knowledge needed to accurately report on this sport. But are we really saying Christine Brennan is one of them? When I think of Christine Brennan, I think of an expert figure skating journalist. I have a very hard time believing she didn't know that Diana Davis is deaf/hard of hearing, especially since it's common knowledge in skating circles that Gleb often is the one to communicate with her and not her coaches. The article Christine wrote made me very uncomfortable. People called her out on it on twitter, and she doubled down on it. I felt she was being very ableist, and despite me being angry at Russia and their system and knowing Diana is a product of that system who has benefited from it (and I personally don't like her skating), I still felt nothing but compassion for her.

@@TheSkatingLesson Let's for argument sake say Diana is NOT hard of hearing, that still doesn't excuse Christine's rudeness towards her, and expecting her to speak English simply because she spent a few early years in the US is yet another sign of the arrogance which is so characteristic of many US journalists when dealing with foreigners. If I were her I would snap back: "Yes I speak English but I'm NOT speaking with YOU".

Regarding hair samples, as someone familiar with trichology, there is no way to know how much the hair grows in a month or a year. The estimate of 1.5cm is not always the case. Some hair strands enter the “sleep” stage and can remain the same length for a year. So, that is a very questionable method.

I’d guess a qualitative analysis would be sufficient, but not all drugs could be identified in hair. Or there may be no methods developed and validated at this time.

Thanks for the info! I am also very curious to see how this impacts the mindsets of Anna and Sasha. Have you seen that picture circulating of Anna sitting on the ice, crying? Apparently she took a really hard fall and since then, she has not been jumping any quads in practices. Today, after jumping singles where she usually does quads in her run through, she burst into tears. I really hope she is not injured, but jeez…. It seems that way.

I can't with the fans who think Anna and Sasha are clean, as if Team Tutberidze would only be doping one of their students. Kamila was just the unlucky one who was caught. Just because someone doesn't test positive for a banned substance doesn't mean they haven't been taking one. It just means they got it out of their system in time. I agree with your Tweet that they should take hair samples from all three girls. I'm a huge fan of Kosto, but I believe the rumors that she had to withdraw from 2019 Junior Worlds due to renal failure from doping. You can be a fan of one of these girls and still believe that they've been doping. It's not a reflection on them, it's a reflection on the adults who are supposed to be looking out for their health and wellbeing.

They really need to start raising the ages of ladies figure skating to avoid these 1 season wonders and abuse of young girls. It's supposed to be a sport for adults not children. It also would allow accountability for athletes. Since Kamila is a minor she can't be held accountable for doping which no doubt was due to adults surrounding her. As much as I love the quadruple jumps from kids, it's time for the sport to mature and rely more on artistry along with technical achievements. I just hope Kamila can get through this challenging time undamaged.

I’m afraid that as long as COP is part of the Judging Process, that will never happen. IMO, there was nothing wrong w/the 6.0 System. The problem was two fold. How it was used & how easy it was to see that hanky panky was going w/it. It was understandable. COP is not!! It allows the Judges to hide behind all these numbers. I used to be able to explain what happened w/the Marks. Those days are long gone. So long as Tech prowess is upheld over Artistic Beauty thanks to this system, then Skating will never be what it used to be : A gorgeous combination of both Sport & Art. Sigh...How I miss beautifully long held Spirals, Ina Bauers, Spread Eagles & a beautiful gorgeous Layback instead 20, 000 variations of one during the length of the spin. Not to mention actual Choreography that fits the music. Oh yeah...I forgot....That takes time away from being able to get that speed for those quads. As I said, this is all JMO, but I’m not the only one who thinks it. ITA w/you on the raising of the age of being able to Compete Senior & Olympics. If it’s not raised to 18 after this, then I don’t know what to think.

There was a point I cheered the quads era with Trusova smashing and rivalling the men... but now I realize we should go back to artistry, and ban quads for women. It is as simple as that. This will make doping irrelevant for the sport and the string of 15 year old Olympic and world champions skating to music they don't understand will end.

@@evamasters5028 I'm pretty sure if you raise the age to 18 no woman will even attempt the quadruple again. When women undergo puberty their hips and breasts make it near impossible to perform the same spins. They'll have to rely more on artistry rather than jumps. Also, as a young adult they're less likely to be taken advantage of and forced to do things they don't want such as doping or training endlessly until their bodies fail.

Great job keeping us updated, Dave! These are really serious issues that the IOC cannot ignore now. Since Sochi 2014, Russian ladies' figure skating has sky-rocketed...and mainly from the school of Tutberidze. It may be mean to say, but the whole ROC team needs to be investigated for any substances as well. Scherbakova and Trusova also should be examined. Who knows what they've been given, as well as the whole team? This time, IOC needs to ban ROC for a long time, no exceptions. ITA and WADA or whatever body that looks into the athlete's samples need to go back even before Sochi 2014 and retest samples from the Russians. Who knows how far this has been going on...

One athlete testing positive with no explanation how it happened and you want the entire team to be punished ... how about we find one of your neighbours who does drugs and put you in jail just in case too? cause you must be guilty right since one of your friends did it... don't be silly.

My question is at the end of the day this beautiful young girl is a minor, and should we really be having minors compete at The Olympics? When I look at Women’s Diving & Women’s Gymnastics along with Women’s Figure skating we should not have minors competing, if they are legally a minor then they need to be still in juniors

Totally understand your points. But a “minor” has a different age definition from country to country - and even in the US it differs from state to state. So the ISU would have to come up with their own number. There already is a specific minimum age, just to note.

Agreed. No kids. Gymnastics had to change in this way, and skating should too. I think 18 should be the age of qualification for any Olympic sport. To have otherwise just opens a can of worms in terms of what people will do to children to win.

Agree. I would rather watch a young woman of 18 compete with triples than an abused young teen doing quads. Not even close. Even the Tara Lipinski story. with no drugs involved, is a cautionary tale of young girls damaging their bodies.

Dave, can you explain the hierarchy of these organizations? CAS ,WADA, the IOC, IAT and RUSADA in relation to this arbitration? How can RUSADA have more authority than the IOC? Is the IOC bound by this ruling at the CAS. What have past rulings been like?

One would have hoped professional journalists would have background knowledge in their field and have had awareness of her hearing impairment - I mean, you did! Regardless of what I think of her skating, I do not condone publicly badgering her to speak English (as though Brennan speaks Russian?) or overall accosting her about her mother for sensationalism.

I saw a thread on twitter with all the injured athletes coached by Eteri, see each photo and history of really young students broken after going though that trainment it's heart breaking. The action right now should direct the punishment in the coaching team.

FYI...Diana Davis's wikipedia used to say that something like "her hearing has been restored to a level where she can hear more than a 'normal' person"...it's since been removed. Now it just says her hearing loss does not affect her ability to hear music.

Do you think this doping scandal is causing the lower ratings. I no longer plan to watch the women’s event because I realize that the athlete who wins has likely doped ( because all three Roc girls have the same coach and doctor) and I don’t want to watch that. Eteri said publicly that the daily weight change of skaters affects their rotation and their agility to do ultra C. As you well know rotational speed is everything in Ultra C jumps. For a triple the skaters rpm is under 275 to do a quad you need at least 390. It is all mathematics how fast you can bring the weight of you legs and arms into center. Eteris skaters don't put their arms over their head just for esthetics it helps them rotate faster because more weight is brought closer to the center of rotation.

Fine, but growing in a healthy way is more important than jump efficiency. Growing bodies don't take such orderly steps, like staying under 200g a day or whatever. If she doesn't have priorities straight, she can't be in charge of children.

The drug has no application for an URI. None. It's a drug for angina, for old people with failing circulatory systems. It isn't prescribed to children.

Journalists should not be asking skaters not related at all (like the US and Japanese men) *BUT* if they feel they must then they need to clearly define the problem: Not "what do you think of Kamila's doping" but "What do you think of the adults who doped your fellow teammate/competitor/an underaged 15 year old girl with a banned heart medication not trialled as safe for children?" And maybe "have you heard of this or other drugs used before in skating?" And they need to stop using Kamila's beautiful skating pictures, but use only and repeatedly pictures of Eteri and her team and Dr S to accompany every doping article. She's under 16 and a protected athlete. The media needs to understand how reporting for doping for adults is vastly different to the doping OF children. It's not just about protecting a name, it's about shining the torch on the adults in the enabling environment that created this and getting collateral information from a range of people in the environment, from "did you dope her?" to "did you know or have you heard these rumours?" to "you knew the coaching team, did you know...?" to "Have you ever been offered/told..." to "You praised the coach of Kamila many times in your commentary and even went to Russia to see the rink, what did you think was the reason this coaching school had such success?" "What have you heard or seen in the rink?" If framed correctly, even other Russian athletescan talk about daily routines, rumours, advice they have been given in training, their experience of skating at RussNats, etc, without making it about a situation about Kamila that they won't specifically have witnessed. If they speak to Kamila, the framing should be "Were you aware you were being fed unapproved drugs? Who was responsible for your intake/diet when training? Did they tell you what to eat and what were they giving you? When was the first time you heard of this drug's name?" Etc. She is not doping. Someone. Doped. Her. I wouldn't think it necessarily the next step to test the hair of everyone in the Russian team as far as public information stands but everyone who has listed Eteri or Dr S as their coach/Dr regardless of country. I think it makes more sense for a Russian targeted test only if there is evidence of RUSADA acting inappropriately.

Collecting hair samples is an interesting idea, but we wouldn't get answers from the athletes currently at the Olympics any time soon, as the test would first have to be developed for hair, and that would take several months, minimum. Unlike urine, which is the repository of everything your body is getting rid of, not everything in the body is deposited in the hair. So, the testing site would have to determine whether all the drugs that you want to test for (or their metabolites) would be detectable in a hair sample. That's a LOT of work (from someone who has developed laboratory tests) and would take a fair amount of time.

I think people should watch the documentary called The Last Gold. This is about Shirley Babashoff and her teammates as they completed against East German's in Montreal 1976. It really gives a good perspective of the other athletes feel competing against doping athletes and what they want to see happen to athlete's medals who have doped.

The disgraced, former rowing "doctor" is not only overseeing skaters, but strangely overlording their kiss and cry moments (and apparently not promptly treating actual injuries). This situation is not going to start and end with KV but is the tip of the iceberg. In fact, it is quite strange that there is no explanation for why the drug was in her system, just feigned shock that it could float through the air and turn up in her test. Reading back on old articles, it seems like this was the open secret that everyone knew and didn't want to confront. I hope after a lengthy investigation, the appropriate prior competition results and records (going back as far as necessary) are invalidated and the victims receive proper treatment.

Totally agree. Now, when it comes to Kamila, two things can absolutely be true at the same time. Yes, she could be aware of specific activity going on, but not realize that it was illegal doping. So, someone could be giving her "vitamins" and possibly injections, but it is also likely she is in the dark about whether such substances were banned. When this case is further investigated on its merits, this is where it could potentially get very ugly for the coaches: If Kamila was given any substances, did she notice that those substances suspiciously stopped just 7 days before a competition? If records are recovered of medication administered that could also be devastating for the coaches. Most likely, these questions, and many more, will come up in later hearings and what little Kamila does know just might be enough to help them piece this puzzle together.

@@dmp7252 I hope they interview every athlete at the school (alone, without coaches) about what they saw and were given. There will need to be enhanced detection methods going forward, like hair tests etc. My dream is that parents of all the skaters are ready to rip their kids out of that school (doping facility?) and bring them home. But there is a lot of propaganda going around that downplays the risk to children’s health. Something must be done from an international level.

@@dmp7252 if they were really (only kinda) smart, they would have administered the medication/"vitamins" that were encapsulated in a blinding capsule, and placebo tablets similarly encapsulated for the days before a competition/drug screen. It would be much easier to dupe her, that way. I'm sure that if kv did have any questions she sure as hell wasn't going to say anything.

Cmon, let’s NOT defend Christine Brennan for her messy behavior. I don’t believe she should have known about Diana’s hearing, and I definitely believe she’s coming at this as any reporter would- wanting to be the first to break the story. However- regardless of Diana’s magic eardrums- the transcript shows Diana say that she gave an answer three times (her answer being no comment) and that Christine tried to “blame” her lack of comment on that she didn’t “understand English”, and Gleb defended said he wouldn’t allow the interview to continue if the same question was asked. Even if her English is nonexistent she has clearly been coached to not comment on this situation- as are all skaters on the Russian team. Ridiculous not to call her out on this behavior- Christine is not “new” to the figure skating rodeo- nor would dogging a skater to answer a question that is inappropriate to them be acceptable even on THIS channel. Even the shadiest things on TSL at least are sent from skaters own messages, or said by them on the videos themselves, not under anyone’s duress. We can respect Christine for what she has done- but I cannot support someone who was even ON TSL saying that she wants the reputation of being a safe person for skaters specifically (which she said in her interview here when the Tarah Kayne story broke) going after someone for “quick tea”.

You are also projecting malicious intent on the part of Christine when you weren't even in the room when those questions were asked. We are totally losing focus here. There are bigger things at stake. And YES we need reporters on the ground who want to get the story now. If you have all year to wait around for some fabricated version of what happened, then go wait for the Russian Government press releases, full of lies and alternate truths. I think this issue of exploiting young girls in skating won't go away until quad jumps are not scored so highly. Maybe adjust the scoring based on age? Way too much emphasis is being put on a move that women can't perform past the age of 18.

Very useful information this possibilitiy of hair testing. Given the fact that it's practically a consensus that Kamila was given the drug (and maybe doesn't even know it's drug - she could easily believe it's food supplement if the sports staff around her told her so), the next conclusion would certainly be she isn't the only one taking it. In the interest of protecting children, would it be possible that Russia was enforced to have several minor prodigy skaters (specially girls) to have thei hair tested? Because if there is a scientific way of checking drugs intake more effectively, why hasn't it been used? Wouldn't it be relevant to have Akatyeva (the apparent next Kamila Valieva) tested? Because this has become much bigger than just this Olympics - it's about someone in authority acting on behalf on lots of talented children who are probably being experimented with. We don't know the effects of these drugs in the long run. And who's going to care after they leave the competitive figure skating limelight? We are talking about the real possibility of a system of disposable talented children. This cruel system doesn't need them to keep existing after they are 18 years old.

"I hope our leaders will not abandon us and our rights and will prove our innocence". Well, she has relied on "her leaders" to support and cover for all the shady, controversial and even evil things she was doing, including using money and the weight of Rusfed with judges, punishing and intimidating anyone who spoke against her and making Medvedeva, Kostornaia and Trusova return to her.... now it will be interesting to see if Rusfed, the sport ministry and Putin will continue to put their money on her, knowing full well that her international reputation is in shambles. Now no amount of moving speeches from Medvedeva in Japan will erase the stain of the school being linked to one of the largest doping scandals in figure skating during the Olympics. It must hurt knowing that the international sponsors will be drying up, while "her leaders" are in a hot mess of her doing. I only hope that the US, Canada, Japan and other democratic countries stand behind their athletes and clean sport and don't let Kamila compete. There should be consequences and a clear message. I say ban Russia from the next Olympics (summer and winter). This will be a statement they cannot pretend was not made.

I agree, KV shouldn’t be allowed to compete, Eteri’s just using her to attain more money, power and prestige w/in Russia. But as Kamila is a victim, I hope there’s a GoFundMe started for her. Young Russian skaters like KV endure this hell on Earth at Eteri’s school because they often want to provide a better life for their families. Not to mention, this was this young woman’s choice of career, what can she do in Russia once her Olympic dream is gone? We all know her body has most likely been damaged through Eteri’s insane quad training methods, it could develop a myriad of permanent heath problems. Then there’s the psychological stress of what this Olympics is putting on a literal child. If she loses her Olympic eligibility next week, she could very easily spiral into crippling depression, anxiety, etc. As the world’s heart breaks for her, I hope it bands together to do something positive for Kamila. Even though nothing can be done to fix all the wrongdoings Eteri did, I certainly hope the Go Fund Me page becomes a reality if Kamila loses her Olympic dream to compete.

Maybe that´s why some girls were not able to be on top level (i mean Eteri level) when they came to Pluscenko... if you know what I mean. They were excellent but not sky rocket.

She is one of dozens who are following the same training methods, she really cannot be the only one affected. Test all Eteri's skaters and you might uncover a landmine that might just go all the way back to Alina. You never know.

It is too late. Most of the drug will be eliminated and under the limit of quantitation in a few days. You can’t imagine that they continued to take anything once this broke out.

Nonstop once every few months means nothing, it’s easy to play the system because skating may not be on the list of high incidence doping and the testing frequency may be limited to testing in competition. Here are a couple of excerpts from a 2018 article “The Detection of Doping in Sport and the Role of Forensic Science” “Test Distribution Plan can then be created based on the risk assessment and prioritization and it can then be discussed with the WADA, implemented, and modified as needed. This Plan is meant to target the athletes at risk for doping, determine which drugs are most likely to be abused, and determine the best way to test for and decrease doping.” “Depending on the risk assessment and prioritization process, the ADO must determine to what extent in- and out-of-competition testing, urine testing, blood testing, and ABPs are needed.”

Who will be there for her if (when?) she is disqualified? I worry for her. If 15 year olds are allowed to compete, they need to have a parent with them.

Thank you again Dave. The quality and quantity of the content you produce is outstanding. Re: hair strand testing: request the court to invite Kamila’s team to offer a hair strand test from her. The strand ought to be taken by an independent individual (not a doctor with any connection). Unlike Trousova, Kamila does not seem to have coloured her hair. All these girls/young women have very long hair, this could be a way of showing history of use or non-use. Again, if she really needed medication - then apply for a medical exemption.

IRC Shelby Houlihan provided a clean hair sample in her appeal process in 2021. She has an 8 year ban for nandrolone. This suggests a hair sample would NOT reflect a relevant chemical history. I think you should consult a chemist to get confirmation on the utility of hair samples.

No matter what happens, if we see Shvetsky standing by the boards or anywhere near the ROC skaters from here on out it will be a new level of brazenness. But I wouldn't put it past ROC as we all know their hubris is off the charts.

The reporter who asked Diana Davis is Christine Brennan though, she has been following FS for so long, she absolutely know what she was doing, You dont need to make excuses for her. She blocked people who called her out for Davis' interview even though those people were the ones who also bashed Davis SS, the same ones who found, spread, and trended the informations about the abused, the ISU partial treatment to 15 years old Kami in comparison with 13 years old yelim etc, A lof of what they find are the ones TSL then use in their videos as well. Fstwt might be crazy sometimes but they are the ones who worked hard when something like these happened. Besides, Christine was never the one who shy away for being xenophobic and we should not just accepted as if she didnt know any better.

The thing that makes me sick is she is a 15 yes old girl. The have purposely put her from and center by herself to tug at our heartstrings. They want us to focus on the individual and not the coaches and the entire system 🤦🏻‍♂️

I totally agree. They did that to tug heart strings. The whole outrage of what they’re doing to her was exactly what they wanted. Which of course is awful but not for the reason they want. Ughhhh….

"Trash goes to trash?" Sounds to me like a great documentary title on Eteri's rise and fall. Isn't she the current holder of ISU "best coach" award? Dave, perhaps it is time to try making that documentary? The subject is certainly Oscar-worthy and the story stranger than foction.
