Tonight, on 'As The Blade Turns,' I interview Anastasiia Makarova, General Secretary of the Ukrainian Figure Skating Federation about the situation in Ukraine. Then, I look at the impact the invasion has on the field of the 2022 World Figure Skating Championships, discuss the ruling of the 2022 Paralympic Games, and discuss how the sanctions imposed on Alisher Usmanov (Alisher Usmanov's yacht and wife, Irina Viner) and Dmitri Peskov (husband of Tatiana Navka) impact rhythmic gymnastics, artistic gymnastics and figure skating. Finally, I discuss how Valeri Liukin is the frontrunner to lead women's national team of USA Gymnastics and also happens to be the subject of an ongoing SafeSport investigation.

You’re insane with the amount of content you’ve been putting up! An hour video everyday must be tiring not even factoring in the amount of research and video layout planning that has to happen. Thank you so much and I hope you’re able to take a break soon as you deserve it! It seems like you’re very passionate about these topics which I can imagine makes this not feel like a chore. ❤️

I can't believe that this is the only western outlet I've seen so far to dig deeper into the whole thing. People just stop at "child abuse" and "scary coach". Yet ignore the geopolitical implications of Kamilas doping case. Really good work Dave, thank you for raising awareness of non-western problems to westerners.

This is why specialists are important in journalism. They don't just churn out articles for content, there are journalists who specialize in certain fields and ideally should be able to provide more in depth information other than "this happened". This is why independent content creators like Dave are overtaking traditional news outlets. They have genuine interest, history, and knowledge in the field which translates into well explored content.

From the bottom of my heart, I appreciate all of your work. You bring quality journalism that is above and beyond. You are so thoughtful. You not only understand the nuances of everything going on, but you are also an expert at explaining these nuances in a way even the layman can easily understand. The dedication you have is unmatched. To take on the amount of work you do is amazing and appreciated. The interviews, the research, the planning, the editing, your engagement with viewers, the work you do on Patreon, and more is just phenomenal. I don’t physically know how you are able to fit all of this in a day’s work. Thanks to you and everyone on the TSL team! I love you all! I’m saddened and horrified over the happenings of our world. It's a good thing you left the Liukin discussion to the end. It almost made me sick to my stomach. It sounds like Liukin and Tuberidze went to the same training school for future sports coaches. It's also a minor miracle that American gymnastics hasn't had another Christy Henrich or two after being subjected to that sort of mental abuse. I'd say more but I can't manage it right now. Thanks for another indispensable report for fans of skating and gymnastics Dave.

Will I watch Worlds? Yes. Do I think we will see stellar performances in the Pairs and Ladies events? No. The Men’s event , for me, is the only real competitive event. Hopefully, the performances won’t be as mediocre as I fear. That would just reiterate how dominant the Russian and Chinese skaters really are.

I agree. The men’s competition is the only thing to look forward to imo. Without the Russian ladies, I have no desire to watch the women’s event at all. They bring so much power, artistry and character that’s going to be missing. Sure the competition will be tighter then without a Russian sweep, but that still doesn’t do anything for me…

Personally, I think the ladies' competition will be more enjoyable because there is less likely to be corrupt judging and I would love to see Kaori and Wakaba have the chance to make the podium. They have both been robbed SO MUCH over the years in favor of the Eteri girls. Also rooting for Loena and the Korean girls. Definitely their chance to shine as well. As for the pairs, as much I do enjoy the Russian pair teams, I am really excited to see what is gonna happen because this competition looks so unpredictable with all the world top pairs not competiting. I am rooting for Riku and Ryuchi to win, personally. They are such a joy to watch and always so entertaining. Knowing them, they would probably be happy with any color medal they win, should they medal. On a side note, I am even more disgusted with Zhulin now for saying that Russia should be allowed to compete and whining about how unfair it is when two of his students are trapped in war-torn Ukraine right now because of the attacks conducted by his president.

Regarding the slots for Worlds 2023, I inquired about this and was given the answer that unless ISU makes a special exemption, the current rules would be followed. If ISU does make an exemption, I wonder if China would be included as the federation didn't really say why they're not sending skaters..

Thank you Dave. Great interview. Personally I am much more interested in worlds now that Russia is not included. The ladies event will be much more fun to watch. The fact that Russia is removed can also have a longer effect in skating if this is a prolonged ban. They will be out of the sphere of influence and hopefully a lot of the block scoring and back door deals will stop. I will miss Sui and Han though.

I don't find Averbukh's comment on Kamila being at the next Olympics to be "gaslighting". The girls with quads are going to be able to be competitive longer than the girls with triples. If you only have triple jumps it's a much bigger problem when you lose consistency than if you can still rotate quads and triple axels with perhaps a little less consistency. Yes Kostornaia is struggling with her 3A, but I don't think Valieva will have issues with at least her quads as she gets older.

None of Eteri's students have made it past 17 yet. They lost triple jumps and stopped being competitive or were injured. If the earlier ones lost triples, it seems unlikely quads can be kept. Valieva will be 19 at the next Olympics. I would love to see her break the mould but it seems unlikely to-be able to 1 last past 18 and 2 keep quads until age 19. Time will tell and I hope I'm wrong.

I have worked with Chinese and can assure you that they will not join Putin in a war. They are much more subtle and self-interested. Whatever tale Putin spun to make them sign that "no limit agreement " before the war on Ukraine broke, it has begun to unravel as the rest of the world shuns and sanctions Russia.

I’m on edge thinking about Ukraine. I keep checking my news feed, refreshing and reading anything new. My heart hurts so bad for them, and I wish to God that it would be easy for the US and other nations to step into the fight. I think that’s what Putin wants, though, and he is using Ukraine to provoke. On the Worlds stuff, I think Kaori will win the ladies’. She would be a deserving champion and I back her 100%, no matter what anyone says in Moscow. Also, the Russian government has been living on borrowed time when it comes to sports. They had the doping scandal for Sochi and stuff, but I’m also a huge football fan. The Russian men were one of the WORST teams at Euro 2016 in France. They got their butts kicked every game, but miraculously two years later when they hosted the World Cup…they were in the knockout rounds. Now, football can be spastic, but not like that. I’d watch their matches, and I didn’t get the whole “fair game” vibe, you know what I’m saying? I thought they had a lot of calls they didn’t deserve. Putin was in attendance every time, too.

I think it will be more interesting as well to see other skaters chances of grabbing a medal though many of the Russians who won last year won’t be able to defend their title, I do think it will be nice to not know who will be on the podium this time around, and know it’s clean skaters competing not to blame all Russians but we know it’s common still there.
