On the latest edition of 'As The Blade Turns,' I discuss the aftermath of the Kamila Valieva doping scandal, proposed changes at the International Skating Union congress, and look at the many ties between Russian Olympic sports, business and the invasion of Ukraine. I also discuss the proposal by the Olympic Committees of Norway and Denmark to ban athletes from Russia and Belarus from participating in international sporting events and the resolution by the International Olympic Committee that events not be held in either country.

Shout out to Zhenya Medvedeva, who has been in the international news for being one of the most high-profile Russian celebrities to speak out against the war. She didn't specifically criticize Putin, but she risks losing her shows/commentator gig for any dissent at all. And of course she recently spoke out extensively in support of Timothy LeDuc and gender nonconformity. We don't deserve her ❤️

Thank you Dave. When the scandal broke out, very few Russian skating fan pages were eager to disclose what was really ensuing. We are fortunate enough to obtain such detailed info from you. Both good and bad. Even now, I'm suspicious of Russian skaters, most especially, those underage girls trained under Eteri Tutberidze. The entire scandal left a bad taste in our mouths and i just hope that the future of ladies figure skating will continue producing exceptional skaters. @@TheSkatingLesson Kamila was treated unjustly and wrongly disqualified in a futile attempt to punish another unjust system. The best outcome for everyone was that Kamila ended up in the 4th place, but after careful consideration and back-and-forth opinions, I realize that she neither "broke" nor was told to fail. What happened is that when she stepped on the ice for the final, she had been deprived of sleep, emotionally drained, with no medal awaiting her as she would compromise the ceremony and get confirmed positive any way (I assume that will happen). So she started the skate and at the first sign of trouble, considering her mates' exquisite performances, she must have thought that she mustn't make the podium. The absolute worst is if she ruined the ceremony while only taking 3rd place. So she let go. Which is exactly what Eteri said, "why did you let go?". Well, as it turned out, this was the absolute best outcome for Kamila's popularity and for the ceremony to commence. She also got FAR more from this whole fiasco than any gold medal could have brought her, if she had not been detected. Within the context it was an immense injustice but overall the outcome was the best. She is unlikely to end up in the scrap heap within two years, unless she willingly retires. My gripe with this thing is that even though Kamila's consolation prize in popularity far outweighs the gold medal, the underlying issues seems will remain unresolved, especially with the war in Ukraine cutting Russia off. Kamila worked hard under the existing systems. She shouldn't have been harassed by WADA and IOC, was effectively no more "doped" than the rest of the Russian machine and should have competed fairly, while at the same time making sure that the child abuse system that produces expendable high performance discardable toys gets stopped NOW, before a new generation gets the same treatment.

As a Georgian with Russian tanks 30kms away from my city, these are scary times and watching the news is like getting a preview of our future. Also, given the current restrictions being put on the aviation industry in Russia I doubt that they'll be able to travel to world's that easily. I appreciate your steadfast, consistent updates on the issues concerning Valieva, Russian doping, and the war between Ukraine and Russia, Dave! You do a better job than those at NBC. It's disturbing that IOC and ISU are taking so long to grow some balls and ban Russia from competitions; more that Russian athletes who competed at the Olympics may be more than just suspect in taking PEDs. Yes, guilt by association isn't kind, but indeed, as you said it here, why would the coaches of the ROC figure skating team be scared that one of their athletes tested postiive - that it was indeed a 15 year old who was said to be the one identified? There is only one 15 year old figure skating athlete. The other coaches must have been so worried about Valieva, then, since she's the darling of Russia, their Chosen One, since she would be the one to win them gold, unlike the other skaters in other categories (never mind that T/M were actual contenders, and that Trusova and Scherbakova had as much chance as she did to bring home glory). The connections you've made in the Russian government and with the politics and the athletes who won gold before being part of the Kremlin now...makes me wonder how much figure skating veterans and analysts in places like the US have done their homework. Johnny loves the Russian athletes, and Tara was part of the team where they praised the Russian women, but now...what have they known before, if they knew at all, and did NBC shut them up? This was a great episode. Can't wait for Worlds next month!

You said that Trusova’s Order "For Merit to the Fatherland" is a step lower than the Order of Friendship, but Wikipedia says that it’s the second highest state decoration, with the Order of Friendship being way down the list. Also there are 5 different classes and people usually have to work their way up the classes AFTER receiving lower state decorations, but Trusova went straight to a first class award. “It is awarded for outstanding contributions to the state associated with the development of Russian statehood, advances in labour, peace, friendship and cooperation between nations, or for significant contributions to the defence of the Fatherland,” and Trusova is the only athlete listed on Wikipedia’s incomplete list of recipients. ?????????

The ISU has reacted with (unfortunately not surprising) cowardice. In the most recent statement, they briefly mentioned that there are no competitions currently scheduled in Russia or Belarus, before going on to explain that the real problem is Canada. Russian aggression is not mentioned, rather, they repeatedly refer to "the situation in Ukraine". Disgraceful! Time for skaters from other countries to consider boycotting Worlds? More importantly, time to ditch the ISU as the international organizing institution for figure skating? In essence, they timed her doping badly, unlike the usual. Instead of a reliable doping testing system with definitive conclusions we got pure extrapolation. If she had a one time trimetazedine it would not have impacted performance and might have been an accident. Hair testing needs to be implemented for the future thereby disabling the abuse that Eteri & doc can pull off. Kamila was treated unjustly and wrongly disqualified in a futile attempt to punish another unjust system.

Anna Rizatdinova, the 2016 Olympic bronze medalist in rhythmic gymnastics has also be live streaming from Kiev from a bomb she.get with her little boy. Anna Shabotova may have been born in Moscow, her mother and grandparents and other family are Ukrainian and many still live there (which is why I was surprised so many didn’t understand why she would compete for Ukraine after becoming persona non grata by RussianFigure Skating for blasting Eteri’s camp and doping at13 -her roots are still Ukrainian and a natural choice when deciding where to go from Russia to compete), Aljona Savchenko’s family is still in Ukraine, and DWTS Maksim Chmerkovsky has also been live streaming from bomb shelter- I think this may motivate the IOC/ISU to respond more harshly against Russia due to it’s fallout and affects on top level athletes. At least, we can only hope the outrage allows them to grow a pair regarding Russia.

Fantastic research, insight and commentary, Dave once again, incredibly impressive, thank you. Hair strand tests are a fascinating topic in legal circles. The plus points: all the Russian girls have exceedingly long hair, it could show a lot of history if there were substances used over a long period of time. However, hair dye and treatments (such as Sasha Trousova) have the potential to negate any tests. As for Kamila’s ‘B’ sample. One the one hand why haven’t we head the result of this, by now. On the other, it could be irrelevant. They are not contesting the efficiency of the testing, they’re not saying it is a false positive. They are saying the test is accurate but she “didn’t mean to dope’. In law it then comes down to intention. Is it a case of ‘tough luck - it is there, it is illegal, you should know better, we punish you’ (what is known as a ‘strict liability’ offence) or does there have to be an intention to dope (in legal terms ‘mens rea’. And of course, the definition of ‘protected athlete’ also seems dubious. My sad view is, whatever happens, Eteri will remain in place, she will still keep doing her ‘thing’, be allowed to travel etc.

For hair testing, they can take hair from anywhere on the body. It does not have to be your head. For men, it’s common to take chest hair. If someone shaves their entire body, that’s a red flag, as there is hair everywhere.
@ddjr6673
@ddjr6673 2 жыл бұрын
@@Melissa-yr7fm Yes, for sure, but each centimetre of hair is one month's use of drugs, that is the difficulty. The longer the strand, the more time is covered. For the men, they can say shaving their body "man-scaping" keeps them trim for the costumes etc.
@Melissa-yr7fm
@Melissa-yr7fm 2 жыл бұрын
@@ddjr6673 yes, however, arm hair, leg hair and pubic hair can be used. The notion of head hair being tainted by dyes and chemicals doesn’t work. The idea that men often “man scape,” isn’t going to work. Generally speaking, unless someone suffers from an intense case of alopecia, there is some hair, somewhere on the body available for testing. Sure, head hair can give a long history, which is great for research. If you are looking for drugs to allow someone to compete for the current season or competition, hair on almost any other part of the body will work. It’s silly that they don’t do that now. Even for swimmers or sports where there is a lot of hair grooming, it’s rare to see someone without hair of the required length anywhere on their body. I’m sure, just like with all things, exceptions can be made or rules can be made for certain situations. Skating doesn’t even really need exemptions, even for men’s chest hair, because you can make costumes that cover any are with nude material.

I can understand Alexandra Trusova being upset that she landed 5 quads(4 cleanly) and still did not win first place. I honestly believe that her pick in music was a very poor idea. Most of these judges are very old school and they are more inclined to give higher artistic scores to music that is classical. And her choreography was not impressive either. When she was with Plushenko’s team, they gave her an amazing choreographed program and music. If she had skated to that program this year and landed the 5 quads, I have no doubt she would have won.

Have I got some questions for him. Just like when EPO became known as a go to Blood Doping Drug. I had to take EPO when on Dialysis &, just to begin w/, that shot hurts so much that if you don’t need to take it, then why would you? Just on that alone. I always equate it to getting nailed by 5 Black Hornets in the same place & at the same time!! When I say that stuff hurts, it HURTS!! Then there’s what increasing the Red Blood Cell Count in a Healthy Person long term can bring. It’s scary, as there’s such an increased risk of major Blood Clots forming due to all of those extra Red Blood Cells floating around. Which brings it’s own complications w/that happening. It’s a sad & scary thing w/out a doubt. Thanks Dave for all of your hard work on this, as it is very much appreciated by many of us. Take Care!! 😊
