I think your assessment about the doping from a young age is spot on and how the if ‘you don’t take this we will find someone else who will’ mental game these children have to endure. It reminds me of the 14 yr old female Chinese platform diver from this summer Olympics who said she needed to dive so her mom could get medical care. Absolutely heartbreaking 💔

Last week we were laughing together since we have to translate every joke 3 times before everybody understands and now corridors are silent. I only hear them talking on the phone non stop, no jokes or celebrating holiday. There's drums and dancing outside my window, carnival in Netherlands but our house is numb.

I was very pleased that the Olympic commentators in Australia REALLY commented on the poor and dangerous technique of the Russian skaters. I am a former ballet dancer and had Russian teachers. I now have chronic stress fractures in my spine that will forever prevent me from ever doing any high intensity activities whatsoever. Because the same approach stands in ballet - being underweight, preventing puberty for as long as possible and serious overtraining. Where is the actual accountability and protection of children? 7 days a week training was not sustainable - especially after at age 8 my teacher told me "only eat one apple per day". That was it. One apple.....

I think TSL owes skaters like Ashley, Karen Chen, Gracie, Rika Kihira, Bradie Tennell, Mirai, Eunsoo, apologies for criticizing them for not keeping up with the Russians, not having the same difficulty, for inconsistency, etc when it turns out they couldn't keep up because in addition to rigging the judging for ugly skating, the Russians were doping on top of cheating through judging. It makes you wonder why TSL never criticizes the Russians for ugly skating. They're probably all doping and THAT is the best they can do? They don't even skate on edges or have good technique. Cheated jumps, sloppy flailing, two foot skating, no speed, etc and the list goes on. One of the few Russians who skated beautifully was Kostornaia, and who knows if she'll ever regain form again Remember judges aren't professionals. They're volunteers. Skating commentary like TSL has influence and unfortunately they just vapidly echoed the russian hype machine instead of pointing out that the Russians have bad basic skating. Justice for the other skaters
@MM-co4lf
@MM-co4lf 2 жыл бұрын
@@lild2515 I think your comments are interesting although I won't really agree that TSL has unjustly critisized the US and Japanese skaters. In many videos David and Jonathan have mentioned just how much they appreciate skaters like Karen Chen and Rika and their contributions to the sport. In many ways TSL has evaluated these skaters up against the Russian skaters; however, it can't be ignored that the Russian skaters have been winning everything. It shouldn't also be ignored that both David and Jonathan have criticized the limitation of Eteri's jumping and skating technique, not the mention the unimaginative chereography of Dany G.

@@MM-co4lf dave paraphrasing his coach: you think a bag of pills would have made a difference for Karen Chen? calling Gracie mentally weak all those years when now we know why one camp kept winning...they echoed the toxicity that led to Gracie suffering from disordered eating. Rika Kihira in person is not slow. But Jonathan keeps saying that. You know who skates like walking through mud? TUKTAMYSHEVA. They never point that out. And the years of saying xyz Asian skaters have no expression...while Aliona, Kamila, escaped the same criticism. And while Aliona has great skating skills - she's often robotic and stone faced. Kamila could be skating to any old music. On all these issues Fran pointed it out - especially robotic cookie cutter skating and abusive coaching. With less insider knowledge and only working common sense. They really do owe them an apology. ESPECIALLY for adding to the narrative that robbed Rika and Bradie from being judged evenly against their competitors.

“This was not a homosexual event” is gotta be my new favorite quote from Dave. How hard is it for coaches and choreographers to find age appropriate music nowadays, seriously? We may need a TSL tutorial on picking music for Juniors. There are so many options like from film scores such as the Return to Oz, Lucas, Inside Out, etc. It’s baffling that coaches/choreographers aren’t working more on musicality. They should at least have their students watch the movie and read the book/Cliff Notes/Wiki that their music is from when picking a film score. This is how they begin to learn how interpret the music. P.S. Thanks to Michelle Kwan’s Winter program, I got introduced to Tori Amos. I went out and bought that C.D. for $16.99 or so.

On Korea, they have a culture of overworking celebrities until they break them. I've heard a singer talking about how they performed at 8 different events in 8 different locations in one day. Performing in the morning, going to the hospital for an IV and then performing again in the evening is a thing. Leaving work at 5pm is historically frown upon because it meant you weren't working hard enough - you should work overtime as much as possible even though you aren't composted for it (younger people are pushing to change this). It does not surprise me in least that they are pushing their athletes like they are.

Lol all these kpop fans commenting things and compare it to figure skating like they know the culture like the back of their hand when they never been to Korea and only see korean netizen comments from cherry pick translation sites. While it s true that overwork is a big thing in Korea but it is also a big thing in every East Asian Countries, that is why all these countries able to arise from poverty-stricken quickly. With covid situation, I assure you that all artist are lacking venues to perform. Besides, the 8 different 8 locations etc are exageration and only an old news for groups like T-ara at their peak in the early 2010, the most overwork idol group in the history of Kpop bcs they had crazy and shitty may be even mafiesque boss who is infamous for being a horrible person in Korea. No artists work like that anymore, no artist ever overwork as T-ara, not even Twice or SNSD, not current generation nor previous, bcs T-ara situation wasnt normal and I believe it wasnt even allowed with the current labor law. The other reason t-ara work like that besides their infamous shitty ass company was bcs idols only has a very short live career spans (+- 7 years) hence they overwork in the early career bcs that is perhaps their only chance to gain money. For figure skating, atleast for this competition, it is not a mandatory competition. Korea only has 2 mandatory competitions for the skaters. One called The National Competition, the other the Ranking Competition. That is it. This competition though, It is like National Winter Sport Festival, not only for figure skating but for a lot of other sports held simultaneously like mini Olympic. Japan also has it, it might even originated from Japan occupation of Korea, Kaori Sakamoto herself was seen competing in japan version of this competition last year. For Korean skaters, this competition is used for them to get school credit. This is why those who were in High School Rarely skip it while those in University are able to skip it. The end.

@@gigiiv can you give a link to Hong jiyoung articles then ? I search for it in naver but I cant find it. HJY is a big star in Trot and has been for the past decade. It s not her who work for the company, it is her company who work for her. There is NO WAY her company would allocated her to work that she didnt agree to do. She isnt an idol, she has POWER to refuse. An idol vs a Singer/actor has different hearachy in the industry. The idols were handled by a company just like your regular teen heartthrob in the US/UK like 1D/5th harmony, but a Singer/actor/artist can have a say in their career path in Korea. Heck even if you are an idol but you got seniority or popularity, You would still have the power to say NO. Look at Taeyeon or Irene. Irene just has her face but her power in the industry cant be denied that she can even bully a renowned stylist easily. And sorry i dont believe that someone would stan a trot singer of another country with no reason or no dive in the popular acts of that country esp when that person own country trot industry is probably dying. Of course for skater, we do need compassion and korean fans itself were the ones who loudly complaining and critisizing KSU, but some foreign fans weirdly really like to assume and only made it worse even spread misinformation when You know nothing and dont even bother to look for information. The information of the competition is everywhere on social media even the english speaking ones, so you have no excuse to exaggerate facts. On this case YOU ARE MISTAKEN. This competition is decided by the Skater Not the fed and quite frankly after seeing other skaters from other country who got the hate during, leading, post Olympic, I would argued that KSU method of having 2 comps were the most fair. Their decision to send the skaters to 4cc is also correct. Haein can bag a medal after disastrous early season, Jun and Yelim gain more confidence leading to the Oly after their medals, while Sihyeong desperately need international experience. The only missed was You Young, but even on the interviews before or after the Olympics you'd see that Young herself was the one who was afraid of not competing and afraid of being complacent. Still, this was a mistake of KSU for sending an injured Young, when they easily have other not less talented skaters ready to replace Young at 4cc, but what can KSU do when Young herself was the one who didnt want to back off from 4CC. They emphasis a lot of being "fair" so pulling Young out when she didnt want to, wasnt being fair for Young who won the qualification competitions fairly.

I feel exactly the same way y'll do about the personalities in the '90s. I miss that about skaters today--a lot of them look and feel so cookie-cutter. And it's funny the ages were brought up--recently I was thinking in relation to how toxic the fandom is on social media and how immature I find it--then it clicked--it's because it's now a sport dominated by teens! Teens like you said, skating to songs from Chicago--which I mentally contrast that with Tara skating to Little Women or Anastasia. I've come to the unhappy realization that this isn't at all the sport I fell in love with 30 years ago. And I also miss '90s Olympic athletes. Also: Happy Belated Birthday!

If you are a pairs skater and you have Freddie Mercury singing “and now I’ve gone and thrown it all away,” you should match it with some sort of throw. Their skating was super, but the moment passed. By the way, Torvill & Dean also made an album. I'm trying to get one.

No.. the Winter Sport Festival Competition in Korea isnt organized by KSU nor it is qualification for Worlds, it s for school credit thingy, that is why it was divided according to their age and school level. You know as one of the reason that Eunsoo and Jun was admitted to Korea University (like one of the very best Uni in Korea with highly competitive admission process and entrance test) when they both probably barely gone to school in High school. That was the competition for. That is why Eunsoo and Jun werent there bcs they already got in while someone like Young, Haein, Seoyeong who are still in High School really need the competition. Honestly Yelim who is a freshman at Dankook Uni probably could have pull out or may be she needs the prize money (who knows) but even Dabin Choi (7th at Pyeongchang Oly) was able to not compete in this event previously after she was admitted to Uni and now Hanul Kim ( 13th at Pyeongchang) who is currently an Uni student didnt compete in this event either, so this comp isnt like Nats nor the Ranking Comp, both of which all Korean skaters need to attend for funding purpose and qualificafion for World/4cc/oly. This comp is a comp that skater choose to do, not a must event from the fed.

Besides, after the Illia-Jason-Vincent, Mana kawabe -Mai Miahara, Zhu Yi - Hongyi, Karen - Mariah, Team Koko-Kanadai situation, i grew to like the Ranking & Nats combination that Korea have. The events were atleast both filmed and only 2 qualifications unlike China's 5 and unfilmed situation, or the US/Japan only 1 qualification that made it easier for grumbling from fans and others that could stress the skaters before their biggest event ala Zhu Yi, Mana, Karen etc. Besides, the current Korean skaters arent like Yuna with strong mentality so more competition actually seems to work well for them, for ex the 4cc before the OLY. I think, the 4CC they gone to seem to help the Korean skaters mindset going into the OLy.

@@winterfallsatyourservice i m not an expert on this so dont quote me, but in a lot of Asian countries, fair play is very important. What I mean is that no matter how smart you are, you still need to do the due process of admission test etc if you want to join some prestigious Uni. For example, if you won a Highly Recognizable competition in high school like International Physics Olympiad and want to major in Physics then it is a free pass, but if you want to major in social studies you probably still need to do and pass the entrance examination test. May be this is what happen to the Korean athletes as well since they didnt won any medals in the Oly, they need to do the due to process with the participant in the Oly as an additional value of their resume. So it s not like their Olympian status isnt usable. After all athletes themselves already have an easier admission channel to join an Uni. Like they dont have to score as high as regular students in the entrance examination test which to regular student already seem very unfair. I also need to remind you the significant of University name is more important toward future employment in Asia than in the West. If athletes spend 10 hrs to train, i dont think those who aim to get into prestigious Uni would spend less time in their after school studies session than athlete training time, so to them athete already have it easier.

I LOVE that you discuss how in the 90’s there wasn’t such Nationalism in figure skating! People don’t remember the tv special with Brian and Katarina or the special with Kristi and Kurt. People who don’t follow skating thought it was so weird that I wanted Sui and Han to win. Not only because they weren’t American, but specifically because they are Chinese. But I’ve been involved in skating since I was 6 and now I’m 40. So my investment in the sport is simply based on who moves me, not the flag they represent. On the topic of enjoying what is now Toddlers and Tiaras figure skating. Mens, dance, and pairs are exciting because the top 4 can shift significantly. A bad free program from a medal favorite and a stellar program from someone not expected to medal, can shift the podium. That’s how sports are supposed to be. When I was watching pairs, there were moments I wasn’t sure. It was exciting! I was standing in my living room like my husband watching a football game by the end of Sui and Han. I don’t want to know the top 3 skaters going into it because I can add. I want to watch because I don’t have to add. I want to be surprised. I want moments like Yuma Kagiyama almost hitting his dad in the face as he threw out his arms when his short program score came out. The reason so many people love Kaori this past Olympics is not only is she amazing, but THAT was joy! I’d like some real joy back in ladies figure skating.

Belated Happy Birthday Dave. And also Happy Birthday to your dad and your brother. Great analysis yet again, thank you. I agree with Jonathan in that I have found "women's" singles skating an increasingly difficult and uncomfortable watch. I have found remnants of the sport I love in there (Wakaba, Mariah, Loena, Kaori, Young etc.) which gives me some hope. I too, can't help feeling it has become more divorced from the other three disciplines. More importantly, prayers for all those caught up in conflict. This is a very worrying time. One of the interesting things about our sport is the development of cross-nationality representation, especially since 1990s and this century. (Eg. Marina Anissina representing France, Aljona Savchenko representing Germany, Olivia Smart, Spain, Keegan Messing, Canada, Vanessa James, British National Singles champion, represented France, now Canada the list goes on of course). I can only see this as a positive in terms of internationalism, and fostering relations between countries at a competitor level, even if not at management level. One of the few positives right now though.

Happy belated Birthday Dave! 🎈🎂🎉🎊🎉🎊✨🎇✨🎉🎊🎈 I thoroughly enjoyed this video! I was delighted when it popped up, what a treat! As to the unfortunate subject of doping - I can't help but think of Alysa Liu. With all of her technical flaws (the fault, imo, of her first coach Laura Lipetsky), it is still amazing to me that, when she was tiny,, she was able to pull off (yes, often UR but still pretty darn close) 3A's and 4L's against Russian skaters like Valieva, who we now know was doped. I don't need official confirmation to know for sure that Kamila, and her teammates, have had an unfair advantage all along. For myself, I will always consider Alysa the true 2019 Junior GPF and 2020 World Junior champion. To my mind, she was 6th, perhaps 4th, at the Olympics, if one deducts Valieva's scores, and her teammates. I am very cynical with Anna and Sasha's placements, considering who their coach is, and no one is going to persuade me otherwise.

At least, Jun is booked and busy with SK media. I wished more people were able to watch his MMTG interview because it's how I wished North American media would interact with their athletes. Not only would I be happy to pass on Eteri's skaters, but the thought of the other baggage they bring to skating such as: all the overscoring, backroom deals, and flat out cheating. And that's before I think about the doping that according to one of their own (Zhulin) is systemic in Russian skaters. With all that: I am just DONE with Russian skaters, for now. I would love to see a competition, honestly judged. I would cheer for scores that show appreciation for the Japanese extraordinary skating skills, women that look like women instead of skinny girls. I could actually cheer for Ice Dancers that bother with choreography. Russia needs a timeout. I'm surprised I feel this way because some of my all time favorite skaters are from Russia: Elena/Anton, Katia /Sergei, and Yagudin. Loved many more as well. @@maple8859 exactly, I don’t think it’s a matter of how they would get to France but how would have the courage to demonstrate the Russian flag

The Russian young ladies are completely interchangeable. Right down to the hair and the stuffed animal (please do that video on the stuffed animals). Without the graphics, I can't tell who's who.

I don't speak Russian but I do speak Polish and I believe this to be a similar issue with 'w Ukrainie' i 'na Ukrainie'. 'W Ukrainie' acknowledges the country status, 'w' means 'in', a preposition that links with countries, cities etc. 'Na' literally means 'on' and traditionally links with regions or landmasses, kind of like using the determiner in English (eg. 'My sister lives in the South'- the South is just a region, not a separate country). Unfortunately, saying 'na' with former USSR countries is automatic practice, as back in the day they would be considered regions of the USSR, not independent countries, and now traces of that are preserved in the language. Most people have been saying 'na Ukrainie' not as a political statement, but just because 'that's the way it is', only a very linguistically aware minority would opt for 'w Ukrainie' (at the risk of being called fussy). I believe this is going to change now.

98 Winter Olympics was Eddie the Eagle, the Ski Jumper, and who played Eddie in the film biography Taron Egerton who also played Elton in Rocketman! BTW I boycotted Russian Cup, I wached and enjoyed Challenge Cup. Though the music played in the arena and on livestream was shocking with RAP and F words galore during Advanced Novice Girls!

Now, about Žulin's commentary - the one where he said that every coach was afraid it'd be their athlete that might be caught doping. If you read the whole interview carefully, you see that he tries to backpedal and play it off as if there was an international conspiracy to take down Russian skaters and that the presence of banned substances was faked. So, as if he meant 'every coach was afraid it'd be their athlete, who would be framed'. In edited versions of that interview the order of his comments and answers were actually changed, so that it looks as if they were talking about the conspiracy first, and the fear after that.
