As Told by Ginger "And She Was Gone" Final Cut Animatic

Special thanks to As Told by Ginger director Mark Risley for digging through an old VHS tape of some animatics he still had and sharing this with me to share to all the fans. This one is from the Emmy nominated Season 2 episode "And She Was Gone" which was originally titled "And Then She Was Gone", but scrapped the name due to a book that came out around the same time with that title. There are some minor changes of the animatic from the final product such as the drawings and the background music not being done by Jared Faber. With that said, enjoy!

Holy shit, this is awesome! Why doesn't this have more views? Do you guys know who did the storyboard for this episode? Whoever they were is pretty good. Over 900 panels? Good Lord, this episode must have been a pain in the ass to storyboard.

There were a total of 7 main storyboard artists and 3 additional artists for this episode. The artists were Jeffery Hua, Tron Mai, Max Martinez, Darin McGowan, Eric Molinsky, Monica Tomova, and Alan Zegler. The additonal artists were Michael Kenny, Todd Risley, and Raymond Smith. Alan did the opening sequence with the crow, the dream sequences with the girl, and the end credits with the book on the conveyor belt. Max Martinez took Alan's drawings and tweaked them to make them more streamlined. Darin did the scene with Carl and Noelle when he meets up with her at her new school and she does the moonwalk and worm dance. Todd did the classroom scene where Carl thought that he lost Noelle and Hoodsey said "Carl, you're selling yourself up the river".

The poem sequences were blocked & designed by Alan Zegler and storyboarded by Max Martinez. The opening sequence with the crow was storyboarded by Michael Kenny.

I’m so happy this episode exists. I love how respectful, tactful, and mature the subject matter of depression and suicide we’re handled here. Beautifully done.

One of these days, I should watch And She Was Gone and The Misery Chick back to back. Different stories in a lot of ways, but also interestingly alike.

The music for the poem here seems different from the one used in the final version of the ep, but it seems it works here too.

I wish I was a Klasky-Csupo fan (Even I am the fan of Rugrats and Aaahh!!! Real Monsters.) But I would like to see the others like Duckman, The Wild Thronberrys and especially As Told By Ginger. I would be the true fan of the amazing animation studio of all time.

What software did they use to make this? Also... does anyone know what software they used to do the scanning, inking, painting, and final composite? I want to make a Klasky-Csupo style animation for my portfolio. I want to use whatever software they originally used for their hand drawn animation. Even if I have to buy a PowerMac G4 just to run it.

These storyboards were hand-drawn in pencil, scanned the imported into Final Cut (I think... it was a long time ago!) and edited into an animatic.
