As Told By Ginger "A Lesson In Tightropes" First Cut Animatic

Special thanks to As Told by Ginger director Mark Risley for digging through an old VHS tape of some animatics he still had and sharing this with me to share to all the fans. This one is from the Season 3 episode "A Lesson in Tightropes" which was named after a lyric from the Rufus Wainwright song "Cigarettes and Chocolate Milk". There are some minor changes of the animatic from the final product such as the drawings, some of the background music being missing, a deleted scene not shown in the final product, and Orion singing the 2nd part of “Splinter in my Heart”. With that said, enjoy!

What I find especially saddening is that if Ginger's surgery had failed, then that would mean part of Ginger's last moments would be a breakup.

Some times I think Gingers only true friend was Courtney, like she truly cared for Gingers well being. I hate that they wrote her off

I think they were strapped for time and had to cut a lot of stuff since season 3 was the final season, sadly. And that meant cutting a lot of Courtney and Miranda stuff.

I did find it weird that she's usually obsessed with Ginger, but yet when Ginger almost died/was in recovery Courtney was nowhere to be found. They could've at least had her visit Ginger in the hospital. She did come back in the 3rd to last episode where she gets humiliated in front of the entire football game, and then in the final tv movie where her family loses their money. She was a good person but always got punished by the universe for no reason.

Dodie's problem is that even when she tries to be a good friend, she's still egotistical to the boot. It just *really* didn't look like she felt sorry for Ginger or Darren in this situation. She tries to give some idiotic advices from the magazine she's been reading, but honestly, in the state of emotional (and also physical in Ginger's case) pain this is the worst thing you could end up listening to.

Doctor Dave was already really winning me over as a kid- but the moment he told ginger “you’re in the best possible hands. MINE. I’m not gonna let anything happen to you” is when It really really became clear.

This was definitely the saddest episode of the show. You could really feel the pain Ginger was going through, and that’s what I admire about this show is the characters are very relatable.

I'd love an ATBG reboot series that pushes the content more, dealing with the characters from either high school graduation through college, or right after college to the point were the series leaves off in the future.

It could also leave off after the wedding since there was quite a bit to explore, from Ginger and Darren’s relationship (likely still up and down), how Orion and Simone still fit or get written out, to Courtney and the Griplings’ lifestyle changes (especially if Winston will still be the picture) how Miranda is affected by this (and more a backstory with her closeness to Courtney and resentment toward Ginger to how Dr. Dave affects their family dynamic now married to Lois.

I think you mean revival series. Reboot show is that the show would revert to what it became but with the characters different personalities

5:40 Damn, Dodie got so annoying throughout the series that just being next to her makes Darren disintegrate into thin air... On a sidenote, the hospital scene feels like Half-Life 2 beta version of Kleiner's lab or something (at least the part before the music)

Thank you. I love klasky-csupo. Never seen anything like this before. Rugrats will always be my favorite show, for life. But after rugrats, Ginger might be my favorite klasky-csupo show. But it always changes between the wild Thornberrys and ginger. And Rocket power would be my 4th favorite klasky-csupo show.

This was one of my favorite cartoon shows as a preteen. But I’ve never seen this before, only the pilot, and I really enjoyed it. Full circle, I’m now a film editor and I use animatics in my work lol! (Also they have the best songs)

I don't blame Ginger for being upset with Darren. I thought they had something special, and then Simone came into the picture and Darren ended up betraying Ginger's trust and breaking her heart. They say three's a crowd, but is it ever a good idea?

I don’t know how I’m discovering this now! It’s amazing you were able to get ahold of this, and that someone still had this animatic! This was my favorite episode because it was so real. “Splinter in my Heart” has been stuck in my head lately, and I always hated that the song was so short and always wondered if it had more to it. This confirmed it did! Gave me some closure with that song haha.

Took me ages to realise that the UK got this episode before the US years ago like when it was originally airing. shame they don't have reruns or up on a streaming service in the UK you can't even use a VPN to view it it kind of sucks

This is VERY cool! I'll only mention a couple of things: Did you notice how when Ginger came to after surgery and saw her Lois and Dr. Dave standing at the foot of her bed talking, there was a flash of Dr. Dave looking like Darren for a few seconds? Also, the artist here got the flowers right (sunflowers - in the finished episode they look like the Black-eyed Susan vine).

At least this version sounds less dramatic and depressing than the final version since they didn’t add the dramatic music yet except for the song Ginger sings.

I think it's super interesting that the ending credit song is the instrumental version of "Wrong". The original version was in the ending credits of, "Never Can Say Goodbye" and was sung by Kenny Blank, who voiced Darren. "I know I said back then Never wanted to see you again But I was wrong Baby, I was wrong Nine times out of ten It seems to happen That I'm wrong Baby, I'm wrong Each day that passes I can't, although I try Each day, it hits me I can't live with goodbye I know I said back then..." Was this a foreshadowing that Darren and Ginger get back together by the end of the series?

I think this would also fit the narrative of the childhood friend not always equating to be your forever person as you grow up. Darren's and Ginger's interests were slowly diverging more and more, with Darren leaning towards football akin to his dad and brother and Ginger leaning towards writing, art, and many other artistic endeavors. Darren and Ginger might have been friends when they were a whole lot younger, but what are the chances of them lasting in a relationship as grown ups? Kind of slim because people change, gradually and almost suddenly. Orion might have seemed like a rebound guy, but it could be farther from the truth. He and Ginger had common interests, such as their love of music and art. However, he has a band of his own at least with Ginger on there as a lead singer. What are the chances of Orion and Ginger balancing their professional lives as musicians and their personal life as a couple? It might be rocky, but I am praying hard that both of them are sufficiently insightful to acknowledge each others' rough patches without resulting to over-compromising. At least he would have served as a catalyst for both Ginger and Darren to move on but still be friends, but that is just me.

Yeah, he was a nice guy. A little bit bland from the narrative pov, a little bit creepy-looking (thanks to the artstyle), but out of the whole bunch of Ginger's bfs, he kinda fits her the most.

I hate when a cute couple end up like this, just like when Darien break up with Serena in Sailor Moon R , i cant help cry in these types of scenes :'c , these are the two most saddest break ups in animation, Glad that Ginger and Serena married Darien and Darren in the future, a happy ending :) .

Tbh, when two characters get to sing together, it kinda makes me ship them. And in this case too - so cool hearing Orion sing part of the "Splinter", it's like he really gets Ginger. But wish they'd left this part in an episode itself.

darren became almost as lousy a character as dodie. I think I hate him more than dodie in the last season he became such an jock stereotype.

I didn't really like what he became either, but it's like, his choice. It's just that they didn't really meant for each other - don't understand why in the end they are still shown as a married couple and that their make up happened off-screen is kinda not great.

For me, it was quite clear they didn't really fit - what started with some teenage love because they were so close and Darren started missing Ginger when she left - it all didn't age very well when they actually started dating. And tbh, I think Darren's family has too much of a strong influence on him to just change that - I don't see him growing out of this "jock" phase and becoming someone who Ginger can handle. And I mean it's completely ok, things like this happen.
