It looks good on film but still tons to be done to this panel but I am pleased with how it came out. Some to the other channels I watch with aluminium bodied cars are below:
‪@MacroMachines‬ With his aluminium speedster
‪@GasoliniASMR‬ Project Etceterini
‪@CrucibleCoachworks‬ An aluminium bodied Porsche Boxter
‪@ausarmour‬ Nothing to do with aluminium so far but they restore tanks!

Lots of work paying off; I have never attempted TIG but have seen good results on a couple of specials. Thank you for posting.

My thinking is even if the welds crack on the car I'll just rivet a patch over them and call it patina!

I admire your sticking with it. I don't know if I could hang in there during the learning curve.. it seems pretty steep. I tend to agree with your thinking on the rat rod craze. My speedster is no beauty, but I did have certain 1920ish standards that I tried to stick to. I just don't care for the cartoonish stuff. Cheers

Yep, I wouldn't call yours a rat rod at all. Definitely more attention to period than a lot of them. We all can only work to our abilities I guess. I like it since it gives me satisfaction doing something I know most people can't but then I find it frustrating I can never get to be an expert since I can never do enough of it. It's even more satisfying when people ask you about it and are surprised I did it myself and they ask what I do expecting me to say I am a metal worker or welder or car restorer and I say I am just a software guy! Or they ask how did you know how to do it and I say I just worked it out. Most people don't seem to just work things out these days. They expect Tiktok to tell them.

Looking pretty good Simon, you 'v made a good job of smoothing out the weld. When they built the original cars they would be working off a buck which might make for easier access.

I don't actually know how the did the originals. Would be fascinating to see the finish on a real factor car as it was from the factory. I always get the impression modern recreations/restored cars are done too well but it's hard to tell just from period photos. I know pictures of Riley Brooklands raced at Brooklands in period all look very beaten up and rough!

Well done, solid progress. I can see a lot of hard work & effort. If we could look back to see who did what at the factory on the production line, it would be interesting to know just how many persons were doing your job of one - so a lot more skill is required on your part! The earlier Swallows were made with the individual sheets of aluminium nailed to the ash frame with the gaps covered with an aluminium finisher bead, then, as technology improved, they welded these joints so nice & smooth externally - must have been quicker & cheaper to weld than before! The Standard Swallow is a month or so older than my Austin Swallow and bodywork on the Austin is welded whereas the Standard has the nailed panels and I have a snap-shot of the change in production processes - both 1930 cars. A good job!

There are pictures of period Riley Brooklands at Brooklands that have what looks like aluminium finisher beads over seams. Very noticeable on the front half. I wonder if they did the same? I think technically mine isn't really accurate now as I am using aluminium skin on the timber frame. I think, but can't confirm, that the bodies were usually steel on the timber frame cars and only aluminium on the factory race cars? An aluminium skin is about half the weight of a steel one. Did I ever send you pictures of the local Swallow in the museum here? If I ask very nicely they would maybe let me photograph the inside too.

@@asciimation I don't know about this Swallow! Yes, please if you could send me photos that you have, that would be great! I am guessing it is a UK car that has been personally imported, wonder if it has its UK registration plates on the car?

Remind me why you aren’t TIG welding your panels? Is it for authenticity?

Gas is traditional and leaves the weld soft so once you hammer them smooth it all harden up again nicely. I am actually better at gas than TIG but not great at either!

Yes, I have seen some of his films. He did one comparing gas and TIG aluminium welding which was interesting. The results he got with gas weren't much better than my efforts! Even he said you need to be welding this stuff every day for ages to get really expert at it.
