Here is a fun fact about asexuality + aromanticism that would also be cool to see in a video! Even before the 80's there was a musician called sun ra (1914 - 1993) who declared himself as "non-sexual". He ran a group of musicians who he called his arkestra, and they also noted how sun ra never had any relationships at all, he basically loved music more than the idea of romance. Although a lot of his music involved talk of love, it was always a larger concept than romantic love. (Brotherhood, universal acceptance, things like that.) He as been a big inspiration to me as an ace aro, and he also identified as a God lol, which i find funny because nowadays you see memes of people calling asexuals non-human and then the asexuals saying "Gods? Yes we must be Gods". Sun Ra was a God even before the memes lmao

I saw a really great Tiktok one time from an ace creator (she was literally wrapped in the ace flag) where she said "To all the people who think that the A in LGBTQIA stands for Ally. It doesn't, it stands for Asexual, Aromantic! Straight people, stop trying to insert yourselves in things that aren't for you!" and I just think that's a fabulous way of expressing it. Those straight people who claim that the A stands for Ally are almost as annoying as the "autism moms" who are neurotypical and use the "My child has autism, so I'm a superhero!" as a personality trait. xD

@@PfEMP but doesn't that defeat the meaning of asexual? You either have sexual interest in people or not. I know that there is a difference between asexuality and aromance though. I know asexual doesn't mean that you can never be attracted to anyone ever, but I wouldn't label myself asexual if I already know that I can be attracted to someone. But I would be happy if you can correct me because these are just my conclusions based on what I've seen on the internet. Basically, I'm wondering who exactly falls under the label "asexual" (I know sometimes labels are stupid but I guess the ace community has to agree on something?). Would love to hear your answer, I'm curious😊

Hm. I just quickly Googled it and immediately found a blog post (the language of asexuality before AVEN) that traces it back to at least 1920, Magnus Hirschfeld. I think a lot of people independently came up with the term and then believed they were the first to coin it. I know the same is true for activists Jim Sinclair and David Jay, they both came up with it independently too. It's a fairly obvious word to come up with. I don't think Magnus Hirschfeld is actually the first person to come up with the word 'asexual' to describe us, he's just the first person to write it down and be famous enough for it to be preserved. Most of the historic references were incredibly pathologizing, so maybe that's why we're not counting them, I don't know.
@ryn2844
@ryn2844 2 жыл бұрын
Also there was apparently an entire asexual manifesto (called the asexual manifesto) published in 1972. There were A LOT of black on white references to asexuality before 1981. Heck, there were workshops and academic papers dedicated to asexuality before then.

I made a longer comment but the OED has this: 1907 S. E. Jelliffe tr. J. Grasset _Semi-Insane & Semi-Responsible_ iii. 150 Between the heterosexuals and the homosexuals.., one might place the asexuals, those who have no sex, or those who wish to have none. I see Carl Schlegel has already been mentioned here Karl Ulrichs also sort of did this. He gave names to various identities in... Quite a strangely named system (but he was German, so oh well). We would've been a subset of Uranodionings if we got our term from his system, essentially a type of bisexual, assuming I'm understanding it correctly

Very much this. It can also feel like there is something inside you that is broken. Media and conversations with the people around us can be so incredibly saturated with things that a lot of us just... straight up don't experience. It can easily make you think something is wrong with you without realizing that it is because you weren't given an alternative to the sexualities you were always presented with. Being also aromantic meant it was hard to identify with a large amount of the media that the people around me consumed and spent their time speaking about.

Yes, this was said beautifully. Anyone who isn't a "typical straight" person probably receives hate at some point, but I feel like those of us on the Ace spectrum don't have a space anywhere. Hey there! I think I'm straight (hard to tell when on the ace spec) but I find the thought of having sex with someone absolutely vile. I have only felt it wasn't with 2 people I felt very strongly for. Although even most of the time then, I was more often indifferent to it or only liked it when it made me feel close to those people. Despite this I've always been very sex positive and safe to say there's no internalised homophobia affecting my situation. From my point of view at least, you seem totally normal :D

@@thes0mething Thank you so much for sharing that! That sounds a lot like me too. Shockingly so. I never found it vile just was disinterested like when people talk about sports XD until I was really into a man and later a woman and both of those experiences I enjoyed in the moment. I had grown up in a very conservative area and had a crush on a girl when I was 8 . I kissed her and then was reprimanded by an angry adult and have struggled with my attraction to women since and it had become difficult to tell what was innate and what was trauma. My therapist basically said it is up to me to decide so I needed those other perspectives like yours. Thank you!

@@apk7961 I'm so sorry to hear that you were treated like that❤️ and I fully understand the confusion! I never understood how so many of my friends found celebrities "hot" etc😂 In my later teens I thought I was gay or bi for a while because I wasn't drawn to any men (nobody else either for that matter but I hadn't been introduced to the concept of asexuality yet). Sadly when I did fall in love I was relieved because I thought I wasn't broken after all. I'm happy to say that nowadays I'm very happy with my asexuality and wouldn't have it any other way! It's completely okay to be confused and figure yourself out. I don't quite 100% understand myself but nowadays it just kind of amuses me😂 I relate to the "sports" comment! luckily I only find it vile when I think about me participating. Otherwise I usually couldn't care less or I find it really funny

I completely understand your point about not being sure whether you're on the ace spectrum or just scared to do stuff until you can trust people. Continuing the TMI thread -- I also think I'm demisexual bc very very rarely do I want to have sex with people (even if I'm attracted to them or have a big crush). BUT also: Having a serious fear of abandonment, a mainly anxious-preoccupied attachment style, low self-esteem, and having been sexually assaulted during multiple early sexual experiences, I also question if these are the reasons for my demisexuality or if the demi came first (chicken or egg ??). I don't have the solution. I'm not sure the reason for not wanting to have sex without attachment actually matters tho, as long as I accept that that's my disposition and don't attempt to change it. Also I try to get out of my head about these things and just do what I want in the moment (or things I have had a sustained desire for) with whomever I feel comfortable with.
@PfEMP
@PfEMP 2 жыл бұрын
Additionally, I get the internalised homophobia point too bc I believe I'm way more into the opposite sex than my same sex but also there's a lot of homophobia around me so sometimes idk if that's my real disposition or I just try to conform.

I guessed 1893. However: 1907 S. E. Jelliffe tr. J. Grasset _Semi-Insane & Semi-Responsible_ iii. 150 Between the heterosexuals and the homosexuals.., one might place the asexuals, those who have no sex, or those who wish to have none. Earlier references seem to be more on a scale, rather than a preferential identity: 1862 _Brownson's Q. Rev._ Apr. 232 Man is asexual (non-sexual) and sexual, while woman is all sexual. 1903 _Daily Mail_ 10 Sept. 2/7 All doctors will tell you that, athletic or not, women are more asexual than men. I would usually avoid quoting the Daily Mail. We also have the much later: 1974 _Galveston (Texas) Daily News_ 16 Jan. 6 b/1 The homosexual is no more abnormal than the asexual, who has no interest in either sex. The word unsexual was used earlier, how could I not quote Percy Bysshe, though he clearly intended to be insulting? a1822 P. B. Shelley _Peter Bell_ III vi, in _Poet. Wks._ (?1840) 244/1 Turned to a formal puritan, A solemn and unsexual man.

A succinct explanation of attraction and asexuality: attraction is being drawn to someone. The type of attraction describes the feelings drawing you to them. Those feelings can be sexual, romantic, platonic, fraternal, tribal, aesthetic, and so many more. Often it's a combination of them. Asexual people feel all sorts of attraction, just not sexual attraction.

Same! Jaiden's recent video was, I think, the first time I saw someone in media really talk about it. I never really realized I wanted to be acknowledged like that. And the anger a lot of people in the LGBT community seems really weird to me, too. I don't get it.

I love that letter so much, truly I do find the line about how 'no self respecting gay would stay in the closet nowadays' when even now, 40 years later, plenty do, very funny But the rest of it is just feelings that I see every day in so many people within the community and I feel like it's absolutely some of the strongest proof (group x in the Kinsey scale and the dear Abby letter being others) that asexuals have been around much longer than the internet, and aren't just making something up for attention. It's just such a beautiful letter

EDITED: my original comment was ignorant BS which was called out by a smart commenter below, who I thank greatly. They recommend me to read Julia Serano's "Whipped Girl" to educate myself and I recommend you the same. Have a good day , everyone! EDITED #2: Please, read the last comment of the tread, if you're interested. Ryn wrote a very detailed explanations of hardships I didn't fully understand for which I thank them, but don't how to answer since have got little-to-no experience in the area.

How do you scientifically prove an orientation? (Not trying to argue that asexuality doesn't exist, I am ace, just not sold on the idea that there are only 4 orientations that are somehow scientific)
@moongirl8807
@moongirl8807 2 жыл бұрын
@@ryn2844 maybe through scientific research? Idk I heard it before for other animals that science has evidence for things like homosexuality and polyamorous relationships. I guess that watching animal's mating behaviour can also be done with humans, although I have no specific idea how that would work. Studies and questionnaires, I could imagine.
@ryn2844

@@moongirl8807 I'm just saying that it's kind of impossible to know whether someone experiences attraction to one gender or another without just asking them. Sexual behavior doesn't equal attraction, and several animal species can literally naturally switch biological sexes over the course of their lives, so not everything they do is applicable to us. So if we're going to go on questionnaires, why would we take ace, bi, gay and straight people seriously when they tell us about their orientations, but not the rest? How would you go about scientifically proving or disproving demisexuality, for example? Would you just give a questionnaire to a bunch of demisexuals? Would you go observe frogs? Would you go look for historic evidence of people having written about demisexuality in the past? Why would their opinions have more weight than the opinions of people who live now? What would your bar for 'this counts as scientific evidence' be? Why is your bar higher than: 'Well this person experiences this, so it must be a thing then.'
@zhenia2511
@zhenia2511 2 жыл бұрын
@@ryn2844 Well, I'm not an expert myself since I'm not a scientist, but there are researches in the area of sex that measure different patterns of attraction and classify them. That applies not only to sexual orientations but to researching sexuality in general. According to some sources there are 4 main patterns in human attraction based on sex of the potential partner: heterosexuality, bisexuality, homosexuality and asexuality. Of course, these are main classifications cuz generally most sexualities are spectrum instead of a switch. But stuff like pansexuality is commonly regarded like an identity on bisexual spectrum, that's why identities and orientations are separated. Also, when we talk about sexuality it's important to note that the romantic orientation isn't taken into consideration. I can link you to American institute of bisexuality providing explanations, if you consider the source credible enough.
