Sometimes cat parents hear the term ash in their cat food. What is ash and what's it doing in my cat's food? well, let's take a look! it's not what you think!

What about boiling chicken, Turkey, beef, fish, or even giving raw meat. Assuming of course the meat is organic and well sourced. Bc even the urinary cat diets from the commercial food companies has starches, carbs, fillers, by products, and low quality ingredients. My cat just had structure stones so doing research on what’s best for him.

The commercial foods with starches, carbs, fillers(no such thing) by products and (so called) low quality ingredients are the diets that will help your cat. Your research is not really research. You’re basically listening to pet food marketing. All those neat sources you mentioned will be irrelevant when managing structure stones. You need a diet restricted in the minerals those stones are made, and produces a urine pH of 6.2 to 6.4 to create an environment to prohibit stone formation. I appreciate you doing research. I wouldn’t worry about the mineral profile in RC hairball. They do RSS studies, and use a significant amount of psyllium as a fiber for this particular diet. Psyllium has been shown to reduce calcium absorption so it looks like it’s more increased in this diet to counter that effect. You will find that their breed specific lines and all their dog food have a “better” mineral profile.

I was wondering why Hills doesn't put their ASH% on their cat & dogs AVERAGE NUTRIENT & CALORIC CONTENT? I noticed Hills writes Calcium% & Phosphorus % but no Ash %? Our Australian Royal Canin write their Ash %...

well, by law there needs to be a guaranteed analysis but as I said, ash has really become obsolete. the only right way to compare nutrients is to check websites or call the company. The bag will never give you the info you're going to want.

I called Red Barn and got their numbers. Their website and blog are refreshingly educational and their family owned operation is impressive. Their nutrients are a bit excessive as far as minerals but not the crazy high protein we see in si many foods. If those minerals were just a bit better I’d be promoting it like crazy. Whole Grain Sky Recipe: Protein: 32% Calcium: 1.5-1.6% Phosphorus: 1.3% Sodium: 0.45% Whole Grain Ocean Recipe: Protein: 32% Calcium: 1.2-1.5% Phosphorus: 1.3% Sodium: 0.53% Whole Grain Land Recipe: Protein: 28% Calcium: 2.1-2.4% Phosphorus: 1.5% Sodium: 0.39%

At about 9:17 you show how bad Royal Canin is. $9.67 a pound for chicken meal, corn, brewers rice, rice hulls, and corn gluten meal. Hill's Urinary Hairball Control wet food, which is much better than dry, is less, $7.84 lb. than the Royal Canin dry. Let It Go! "let it go, turn away and slam the door" LOL

Gee in Australia, Europe, UK we dont get Royal Canin from USA it doesnt pass our strict import laws, our Royal Canin comes from Europe, our Royal Canin use Dehydrated meat, no meat meals, RC is one of the best selling cat & dog foods in Australia. Cancel Reply

Ed, that's crazy that a Hills canned product would cost less than an RC dry. Would the lb of the dry last longer than the canned. Most in the industry would say canned cost three times as much as the same diet in dry form. i wouldn't argue with a study claiming less urinary issues on canned food, but I remember seeing that dry cat food sales, even among the urinary vet diets was way over 50% dry. i have to believe that has changed over the years as vets are explaining the benefit of canned, but I bet the dry still outsells it. You should research that!LOL!Was talking with another subscriber and I realize you need to look at Prescription Diet Feline MD. I think you would love that food! Its high protein, high fat, low carbs...for diabetics.

@@PetFoodPuzzleGuy $9.67 lb. is for a three pound bag of RC at Chewy. The price for Hill's is the 5.5 oz. can. Doesn't matter how long dry lasts, price per pound is price per pound. The price of the ground beef, $5.99 lb. and chicken thighs $1.79 lb. I feed my cats is less than both RC and Hill's. According to the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention, 81% of cat owners feed dry food most or all of the time. 61% of cats are overweight or obese.

Hi Glenn, very interesting and informative comparaison! I'm glad to see that Purina One and Iams are actually quite acceptable for pet food which is readily available at the grocery store. My brother feeds stray cats and I will recommend that he buys one or the other for those little kitties. As for me, I actually got the SD Urinary and Hairball Control canned and dry food for my cat Rosalie, and she loves it!!! I was one of those who didn't know about the importance of nutrient levels before, but now thanks to you and Dr Rea, I'm sure well aware of it! This is what I check first, even for SD, everytime I need to purchase a new bag for my dog and cat! - Till next time! 😻🐶🐾

I bought the SD urinary hairball food too after learning the nutrients from Glen, my cat loves it too! Bless your brother for feeding the stray kitties.

Before hitting play on the video - "Ash" is mineral "residue" and desiccated bone - magnesium, phosphorus, calcium, trace minerals, and such. ;b

YES YES YES- the ASH % shows the customer- pet owner how much Ash residue crap my dog is eating. In Australia we were told to look for Ash % it needs to be low, some pet foods would write ash% on kibble bags & on the Guarantee Analysis, but like salt % they dont have to write the Ash percentage.
