Being an "otaku" isn't a good thing, and it's not something to be proud of. It's not really comparable to nerds either. Nerds are seen as a positive thing in society, and nowadays it's "cool" to be a nerd. An otaku is a guy who's so obsessed with video games, anime, and the internet that they're unemployed, have zero social skills, are inherently assholes, and are basically seen as disgusting man children. If you unironically identify yourself as an otaku, you're basically labeling yourself as a waste of space. It's not something to be proud of or flaunt around like a badge of honour like a lot of people seem to think. In Japan it has an insanely negative meaning. Being called an otaku isn't even remotely comparable to being called a nerd, it's far _far_ worse. So yes if you label yourself as one you deserve to be mocked. You're being a fucking weeaboo who doesn't even know they're insulting themselves. And this comes from someone who actually watches and enjoys some anime and reads a bit of manga.
