Upcoming MMO Ashes Of Creation has shown a lot of progress from year to year. Even with its impressive visuals it has been perceived as most to by a little too much when it comes to visual effects on skills. In today's video we'll discuss the steady improvements in this area as well as how other mmos have addressed it. We'll also discuss how UI may contribute to what is refereed to visual clutter just as much as skills can on the battlefield. This MMO is still pre alpha and a work in progress, but even without the skills being in their final form it can be said that it has dramatically improved in a relatively short time.

The new lighting makes the spell effects a lot more bearable 😅 the fog effects in oaken bane make it look damn near perfect in the last stream! No more shade required. However when the camera is lower to the ground those particles are still going to be massive 😂

for me the effects are good in terms of color and brightness. but i would love a slider like in "soulstone survivors" where you can change the transparrency of effekts. that tomes them down a bit and and when your eyes got used to it you can concentrate on the targets or the spells.

Great idea. Tbh a transperancy slider would allow skills to be flashy whilst keeping immersion and visuals on the target

They definitely made it a lot clearer to see what you're doing when skills start to fill the screen, I feel like a lot of us have gotten used to "Filling in the blanks" with a lot of "they should be here now" based on a characters movement and the skills they're using before you essentially get flash banged by skill effects. They definitely seemed to remove a ton of interruptions from visual effect. I can guess my way through a lot of situations in MMO's during larger fighters but it's nice to know I won't have to with this game.

Give us two bars of 5-6 slots each, and force us to choose from a large pool of great abilities to fill them. Possibly give us 2-3 different loadouts to set up and swap into (which should take some time and have a decently long cooldown). Maybe have the additional loadouts be something you earn with higher levels.

I would like to have visual effects for buffs/debuffs instead of tiny boxes in the corner or under their portraits

I think the spells are decent, definitely going in the right direction. However I am more concerned about player model movement in and out of combat. It feels rigid, stiff, simply not natural. It feels like if I'm watching the movie toy soldiers when they are running around in the final battle. The spine remains too stiff, the shoulders are not fluid, sprinting there is no lean, full stopping has no weight. I'd love to see it have fluidity like naraka or something anything more life like. Then I can believe the spells are coming from a player and not a bot.

High fantasy games need over the top effects. It's part of the fantasy of playing, for example, a mage. Throwing multicoloured fireflies that just poof out of existence against the target sucks. Not every spell should be an extinction level event, but big ones? Give them big ass blizzards and meteor storms that wreck the battlefield. Hope they don't go too far tuning the effects down. Visibility is also a variable you can play with. I remember they had this amazing darkness spell that just turned your screen black while inside the effect. It was disorienting as fuck and awesome. The battlefield should be chaotic and noisy as hell when you have warriors able to shatter to shatter the ground with a swing of their weapon, clerics able to summon the power of gods and living artillery in the form of wizards.

I love this take. There should indeed be some epic spells or powerful ones that rightfully draw a lot of attention visually. Just incase they’re a hazard to you or simply for sheer epicness

Remove the Name plates above enemy head(s). But those skill SFX still need to be worked on.

AMEN BROTHER! as a life long gamer and creator Penance simply will not cover the art of the game but I disagree the mage is all about the flashy lol. I will say your fighter looks like a top heavy lumberjack with huge arms and sword with tiny legs.

Brother while I agree with you, I think something built-in like Weak Auras would help people with eyesight impairment to see when a skill reset combo proc went off. Remember, Weak Auras is a tool, a tool developed out of necessity for accessibility.

Wish they didnt put a glowing shield for block. Seems unnecessary.

I want to say thats a specific skill for the tank or a shield passive causing that cause not every active block had it occur

I surprisingly haven’t played, but watch a lot of WoW. And I know everything looks overwhelming to someone who hasn’t played, but most streams have these over the top ui set ups to the point I’m barely seeing the action lol
