That plant was actually aloe vera's lesser known cousin, Pineus Treeus, better known as Aloha Vera. It's native to hawaii but the original settlers brought it to Michigan.

If you visit Oregon, you should try Oneonta lower Gorge. It has hiking, rocks, danger, waterfalls, and very large cliffs on either side that give you the feeling the walls are closing in on you. It's a hoot.

I JUST WENT TO THE CANYONLANDS LAST WEEK! There's mostly just red rocks everywhere but the Valley of Fire had some really cool rock formations like the Seven Sisters. (almost like the Seven Sisters in India made by the northeastern states) There was also a 12 mile round trip hike in the Grand Canyon, which was really hard to complete in a day (if you're unathletic like me). There are lodges at the bottom if you wanted to stay down and do things like rafting, though.
