Yes but his alliance got actually more than 50% and India is not a system like the US. India actually has the system where a coalition has to have at least 50% to be able to claim majority unlike US where even a person with 40% can be majority. So no. The coalition as a whole had a lot more than 50%. The party individually had 30%.

Someone can do a lot of good without term limits, checks on power, a free press to criticise everything they do, independent courts, and the hassle of elections. They can also do a lot of harm. It's a little disappointing that the most stable and productive systems of government tend to be based around preventing the harm of the actions of leaders rather than empowering them to do productive things. Human nature is what it is though.

Fun fact: If Taiwan were to admit that they don’t own mainland China, then there would be a war. The reason is that the PRC has a law which says that if any region tries to secede from China, that they would have to take it back by force. Because China and Taiwan BOTH believe that they are the same country, the two nations are not fighting.

what if in a few years the next President of the People's Republic of China decides that Republic of China has no right to control Taiwan, and sends military force through South China Sea to take possession of the island the same way Russia has taken control of parts of Ukraine? this would be a disturbing international event, the current chinese leadership would not do this, but noone knows what can happen in the future

@tacokoneko 5 жыл бұрын
"They are technically a member of the UN as well since they are considered China still but their government is not" well that is a primary concern, it seems very possible a Chinese administration in the future with different things happening in other parts of the world might annex Taiwan and when accused say "What is the problem here Taiwan is part of China? Nothing has changed". I particularly think this likely if some conflict or other crisis were to arise either within Taiwan, or in a different important area of the world. A future China might make an opportunistic move when the rest of the world is distracted or they perceive the RoC is weakened. It is important to note this is precisely what Russia administration, Putin, did to Ukraine. At the same time as ISIS was destroying and seizing large portions of Iraq and Syria, and western powers were trying to do something about it, and simultaneously there were riots and unrest against the government in the capital city in Ukraine, Russian forces made the move to swiftly infiltrate Crimea and smoothly take over without resistance. China is a very large, powerful country with a decisive central government, and Taiwan is very small. 16 maybe 20 nations is really not a lot of recognition especially if you are RoC and worried about such a threat. Under the right conditions I think a future Chinese government might seriously consider making a "coup" or whatever, to give them finally victory over their old civil war enemy. I think all it might take is an excuse; RoC should be extremely careful and delicate with their military, for example, because it is easy to imagine a bad situation, if a RoC ship were near the wrong island in the South China Sea.. China has done away with the "One Child Policy". But can we be so sure they will get rid of the "One China Policy", or will they make use of it someday..?

Efren Yalung after brexit there was uncertainty among the community there as we voted well in favour of remaining in the EU. Many moderates on both sides of the sectarian divide would have thus been more likely to support reunification. Many feel alienated about Westminster’s lack of interest in ni highlighted by the fact boris Johnson replaced a well liked secretary for ni in Julian smith with a completely Unknown figure in Brandon Lewis. Overall I would admit there is still a slight Unionist majority but undoubtably the younger generations are more likely to be in favour of closer links to the republic.

India's "questionable" democracy's downside isn't in how they elect their leaders. Turnout (proportion-wise, for the 2014 election you showed) is about the same as the UK general election in 2015. In both cases one party won a slim majority, although in India's case this was the first time in 30 years that happened. 171 mln people voted for the BJP, but this was out of an eligible base of 814 mln. And out of that 814 mln, only 530ish mln turned up on election day. 31.3% of the popular vote went to the BJP, and they won a majority of the seats in (their equivalent of) Parliament. In the UK's case (in 2015), 36.9% of the popular vote went to the Conservatives, and they _also_ won a majority of seats in Parliament. The Canadian elections in 2015 also had similar turnouts and popular vote results for the winning party. The Indian election system is based off the UK one, so judging by that the _system_ works fine. It's the events surrounding some of the elections that are iffy, and the quasi-dynastic nature of some of its parties (the INC with the Gandhis would be the prominent example).
@KrishnaDasLessons
@KrishnaDasLessons 4 жыл бұрын
Alexander Wijaya It is because the Prime Minister role has no term limit in India, so someone can technically become a dictator if he/she had a cult following. However India's democracy is technically better than most Asian "democracies", since it is an actual democracy with legitimate elections. Obviously it has more corruption than developed Asian democracies, however it's democracy has actually survived throughout the years.
@awijaya2116
@awijaya2116 4 жыл бұрын
@@KrishnaDasLessons Term limits aren't solid indicators of a democracy's legitimacy, though, especially when they're Parliamentary ones (like in India). Israel, for instance, has the exact same lack of term limits on Prime Ministers. Arguably, they're _less_ democratic, since their elections are based on a closed-list proportional representation system (meaning citizens nationwide vote for a party and not a representative, with the parties already deciding which candidates will become reps). At least in India, the PM can _theoretically_ lose his/her seat during a general election. But let's use a 'full democracy' (according to most, Israel is a flawed democracy) as an example of how an absence of term limits aren't a negative. Iceland, the Netherlands, Germany, and practically every parliamentary democracy in the world doesn't have a set term limit for their heads of government, and no one argues that their democracy is flawed because of it. The truth is that in parliamentary democracies, parties _should_ shuffle out leaders that the public don't want, because it'll reflect in their vote counts during elections. Basically, the minute they massively lose an election (like the INC did in 2014), the losing party usually takes a long look at itself and tries to fix what made them unelectable. The INC didn't really do that- Rahul Gandhi is still the party leader, despite presiding over what's essentially an electoral landslide.
@KrishnaDasLessons
@KrishnaDasLessons 4 жыл бұрын
Alexander Wijaya Another issue is the fact that many of the candidates get pretty bad, however they still get elected.
@awijaya2116
@awijaya2116 4 жыл бұрын
@@KrishnaDasLessons 'Bad' candidates are a matter of opinion, though. A left-leaning American that supported Bernie Sanders could easily make the case that both US presidential candidates were 'bad'. That doesn't mean they didn't have popular support from large segments of society. If you win an election without vote-rigging, then it's a valid election. Being a morally reprehensible person doesn't change any of that, and shouldn't affect an election's legitimacy.
@Sayujya09
@Sayujya09 3 жыл бұрын
The german system is perhaps the best we have currently. A small party can still have representation if they get a few minimum seats or votes while the larger parties are divided on proportional votes. This solves the issue of a party with 37% votes having 66% of the parliament (rough figures for the current government) while the main opposition with 18% votes only has 9.5% of the parliament.

I usually think the one that works best may differ based on a country's demographics, geography, size, etc. This stuff is very complicated and hard to explain. Not to mention different variations of each such as parliamentary vs mixed vs absolute monarchies or fist past the poll vs mixed representative democracies or communist vs nationalist vs whatever else there are dictatorships, including the Roman style temporary dictatorship as it was originally formed.

LOL. The Indian election thing isn't suspect at all. Usually there was minority coalitions or just minority party rule. He was the first to win a clear majority government in around 40 years. And then his re-election ended with him winning by a historic landslide. Also your failing to acknowledge the point that despite this they have alliances where multiple parties in the election are joint together and the party which runs the alliance doesn't neccesarily have to be the one that won the elections (should that allaince win). India has different rules for what is considered a majority. 30%+ for any party is amazing. Look further into it before bashing it especially when at the time this video was made the government was a majority (and is even bigger now).

The problem with the Indian election system is the problem with most 'first pass the poll' system, you can argue that even in US, Canada and UK government are not the exact representation of the voting percentage. It also slightly misleading to say if that you get 30% of votes you get to rule the entire country because India has a federal structure of government and also it has an upper house. Another thing this that getting 30% votes is easier said than done since it has a multi-party system with a slew of regional parties, for decades no single party was able to this. There are plenty of things wrong with how a candidate gets his/her nomination from a party, but not that much wrong with how they are elected.

In Nepal we elect 210 or such people from electoral zones rather than states because we only have 7 states which are sub divided . So of the 210 seats 66% is needed by a party to be majority and rule for 5 years but if parties don't cross the 66% marks, parties work with other parties to count the 66% of seats and they form a government.

One party states aren't inherently anti-democratic though. Democracy isn't when you vote on rulers, it's when the power is in the hands of people. Vietnam, for instance, has elections and democracy, it's just different to the way Europe does it. In America and other countries we have a few parties which aren't very accountable to the public and are dominated by corporate interests, so while we are multi-party states, that doesn't really change anything about the level of democracy in peoples lives. I think it's really euro-centric to act like representaive multi-party systems are the only true democracy.

The point about majority i.e. >50% works only for two party systems. It does not in any other case. India is a multiparty system and that multi is included over 20 major parties, so getting over 1/3rd of votes with allies getting the other votes to go beyond 50% makes sense. Not the best system but it works.

Adwait Sathe but the thing is BJP alone (not even including NDA allies) won more than half of the seats. Considering that only 31% of the people voted for them, this doesn't seem fair innit? Especially when the country's headed to barbaric ways. But musing or rejoicing over it is of no use now as the elections aren't far away.

the biggest deal with asia- most countries have a homologous ethnic population (especially in south east asia and far east). if you go to western countries, there are more ethnic groups that the political parties need to deal with, and lots of different lifestyles that a single political party needs to address. For example in Mexico, they had elected the PRI party from 1929-2000, but now is switching between PRI, PAN, and PRD parties.

China actually is kinda structurally democratic in the limit of representative systems. People elect their local congress, which collectively elect provincial congresses, which elect the national congress, which elects the president. It's just one or two levels further removed from the executive than Americans or Brits get and that insulation practically lets the elites decide things internally.

Those percentages are exactly why switzerlands system is so great. On party gets 20 percent of the votes? That means, only 20 percent in the legislative will be from that party. Another party has perhaps only 5 percent? Not too bad, at least 5 percent of that party are in the legislative. And then, although the excecutive isn't chosen by the people, it is chosen by the legislative. So in indirect ways the people can have an influence by voting for the party that is likely going to choose the person they want into the executive
