I will be talking about how Asian parenting isn't what it seems to be. It has a rough reputation, but I will show your a different side to it.
Originally born in Hanoi and raised in a strict Asian family, I grew up with a lot of traditions and anxiety issues. However, they made me who I am today - a strong willed goody two shoes with a twist. A love for art, astronomical theories and learning new aspects of social perception provide me with a balance of self expression and absorption. I am now a senior who is striving to be a designer one day.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

There are some people who thrive well under this kind of parenting, but this doesn't apply to a lot of Asian children. It's great that your experiences were positive and that you were able to gain this kind of perspective, but it's not a one-size fit all solution for children who are more sensitive and who need positivity and encouragement to thrive.

Asian parents have their strength and weaknesses. Overall, Asian parents are great. My family and I left Vietnam to America because of the Vietnam war. We lived in the ghetto side of America. My parents worked 60-70 hours a week for over 15 years. They paid for my college tuition. They worked hard so I can have a better life than they did. Love and respect for my Asian parent.

Hm. I don’t know if she has stockholm syndrome. Everyone’s Asian parenting experience is different, but there are similarities with culture. My dad was incredibly strict, emotionally unavailable, held me to impossible standards, and also physically and emotionally abusive. That’s why I cut him out of my life. It is funny because Confucianism and filial piety has my moms side of the family saying that it’s unacceptable. But it’s been the best decision of my life. People in the Asian community argue all the time if physical abuse is cultural, I would like to say that I believe it can be. I think it is a bit dangerous to be a spokesperson for all of Asian parenting without addressing that everyone’s experience is different, but this speaker seems young so she may not be aware.
