New jeans director admits copying Mexican girl group, Jeans but says it’s ok because it is a classic. It is only wrong if they copy from contemporary ones. They didn’t give credit to Jeans. 👖

The proper way to reference an inspiration was how Jimin talked about his song LC. He gave us the movie that inspired the song, his feelings or emotions as he was watching it and after he watched it, he took some lines from the movie and used it in his song and because he acknowledge the movie/source of the thing that inspired his song, the movie director appreciated him for it and even gave his song a shout out. That's the respectful way of letting the world know you borrowed or took something from someone to use or add to your art. That is referencing.

Wow! This is crazy! "New Jeans" has much more resemblance with "Jeans" than "Illit" has with "New Jeans"! And the audacity and lack of integrity to accuse other groups of plagiarising your content when you, yourself literally copy everything from another group is outrageously arrogant of them! At this point, I feel like she just couldn't digest Illit doing well on the charts and the possibility of them surpassing New Jeans when she had invested so much of her time and energy trying to surpass BTS. It must be too much for her to take and hence what we are seeing now! PS: It's funny that they even copied their name, just adding a "new" to it! This is a master class in lazy copying! At least you ought to be creative while copying!

The difference being one is a recent girl group from the same company, from the same country. The other one isn't. "Plagiarism" is only a issue when it causes harm. New Jeans does get harmed by ILLIT blatantly copying them. It harms their market value. It doesn't harm Jeans in anyway because they are not even active and not even in the same country. Also, using the excuse that it's classic so it's okay to copy is nonsense as well. Jeans isn't super well known world wide, so if you don't mention the reference points people wouldn't even understand you're paying a tribute in any sort of way. At that point it's plagiarism and you're not expecting anyone to notice. And honestly, if MHJ hadn't started attacking other groups for copying NJs there's a good chance we never would have found out about their inspiration since they never bothered referencing it. With the Powerpuff girl theme that they did, it was culturally popular enough for people to understand what their inspiration was and they didn't deny or try to hide that. So if their intent was to actually give credit to the first from an appreciation of this classic group, then it would have been just as obvious, but it wasn't. It was just outright theft, hoping the group was obscure enough and powerless enough to never do anything about it.

yes....compare that to the way Jhope/BH treated the original artist behind chicken noodle soup....it was shared in a previous comment that "JHope actually paid the original artist out of his own pocket to re make chicken noodle soup.Yeah I think he paid more than $2million, and he always shouts out bianca & webstar when he performs it. It was one of the songs that inspired him to dance as a kid. To think when BTS started out they could barely afford to eat and all shared a room but they came this far...I believe he also let them keep the royalties He paid 2.7 million. He didn't even have to do that, because the song was released as a free gift for ARMY, so he made no money off the track, meaning he did not have to pay for the rights. He did it anyway, out of respect. That's just the kind of people BTS members are." I wish Hybe would incorporate this into their corporate vision and culture...and if they can succeed globally with this core values....they are definitely the new era of entertainment worthy of support. Gone are the corrupt days of PDiddy, Harvey Weinstein, Burning Sun type activities, SM, etc.

Currently, the standard copyright laws protect up to 75 yrs; assuming Mex law meets this standard, “Jeans” has approx 30 yrs ownership over everything they created. Plagiarism is costly, even more so the bigger the percentage plagiarised, which in the case of MHJ project is close to 90%. Jeans members all still alive and two still active and fairly well known in Mexico, have just won the lottery As it’s said in Spanish lore “nadie sabe para quién trabaja” (no one knowns for whom they work) I feel for the girls involved, but not for all the adults illegally appropriating some one else’s work While Hy will loose some $$, MHJ and everyone involved have lost their futures in the industry Allow me to reference a classic: “They who laugh last, laugh best”

Just one conclusion from this uncovering of plagiarism: It debunks MHJ’s injunction entirely, as her case is based on the alleged plagiarism of NJs by other Hy’s ggroups On the other hand, since Hy didn’t rebut that argument of hers in court, they obviously weren’t aware of the situation. Having a successful gg has been BSH’s pet project since the beginnings of BigHit, but he wud never have risked BigHit/Hy’s image and prestige with such blatant plagiarism. Further, not long ago Hy launched a project for expansion in LatAM based in Mex, stealing from a fairly known Mex gg doesn’t make sense; too risky (I understand that Jeans’ songs are still played in “oldies songs” radios)

Oh, and I found it interesting that the director said his mindset on this more aligns with MHJ than Bang PD. Hybe really messed up with adding her to their team. She doesn't have the same mindset as the core of Hybe which is Big Hit. Probably the biggest problem with becoming a conglomerate is they have aligned themselves with people and institutions that do not share the core of their vision. Like don't get me wrong, Big Hit wants to make money too (in the end capitalism is going to capitalize), but they do have a core belief in creating good music and investing in their artists, whereas MHJ doesn't truly care as long as they make money.

As for New Jeans the group, I am so upset with the adults around them. How ignorant are the parents? And what about their legal representation? Who advises them to officially take a side in this? I’m sure they wanted to, but someone, anyone should have told them they needed to think about their careers and let these two companies fight it out. I believe MHJ will be fired, if not physically then psychologically. Even if she could win the injunction, she is NEVER again going to enjoy the freedoms she had a Hybe. I’m pretty sure they are moving them out of the 16th floor as we speak. And not for nothing, but HYBE is petty; they will keep them in court for a decade - and there goes those girls’ career. She opened this "plagiarism" issue up by accusing others of copying her. This is the kind of can of worms you open up by acting like the worst kpop fan and pointing fingers at others when you aren't squeaky clean either, far from it. I also think legally speaking it's a non-issue in the case of Hybe groups, John Kim (Komerican-OG) explained it well in his first video on the subject that MHJ when she worked under SM all her concepts became the companies concepts, they are owned by SM. And the same applies for Hybe. We can debate about is it ethical or not but at the end of the day Hybe owns Ador, it's a subsidiary. If they want to copy themselves they legally can do it. Now my question is when did MHJ start complaining about "plagiarism" was it well before getting wind of the audit or right after? She would have had to take this issue up with the company in writing a formal complaint but did this happen before the audit? Frankly, I think this issue was created when they knew they were about to get caught with their take down Hybe plan.

I don’t know if they will continue to stand firm with MHJ as more comes to light or not. I hope their eyes begin to open, but as they do, I have concerns for them. They may feel loss, a feeling of being betrayed and used by someone they deeply trusted and wholeheartedly supported while the world watched. That could be hard to work through mentally at any age, but these are young girls. I hope they get out of this with very little scars and that members of all the groups MHJ has hurt rise above and soar. That includes BTS!

So New Jeans copied Jeans. How interestingly coincidental their names are. I guess 'new' jeans aren't so new after all. And this director guy, he finds it 'annoying' to check other releases to be sure he's not duplicating or copying? And there's 'no reason to avoid doing that anyway' because he's apparently got some personal calendar on when it becomes all right to copy an older work? Well, perhaps he'll see how much more annoying it can be when one is prosecuted- and hopefully, dismissed- for plagiarizing.

I don't find anything wrong in taking inspiration specially when done respectfully, but I do find it incredibly arrogant to try to claim a trend as your own. It is absurd that the director is claiming that trends are against some sort of a national rule. They're trying to ride two horses at the same time. What they are trying to push is that these things were common for girl groups to share in the 90s and early 2000s so they should not be held accountable but suddenly after NJ used it, it is no longer free to be used by other girl groups and they should be held accountable. That's a bit ridiculous. How can you claim plagiarism for something that was never yours to begin with? When you take things from the zeitgeist, you don't get to call dibs on it. They don't stop belonging to the the zeitgeist just because you used them first. Your collection of things from the zeitgeist is still a part of the zeitgeist. Even if you brought back the trend, you suddenly don't get ownership of it and you have no authority to prevent others from being a part of that trend. As professionals who have been in the industry long enough, they should know better.

Victims of abuse/a scam/gaslighting will always have trouble to see it even if it is very clear for everyone else. MHJ made them believe she is all that. She made sure that their parents believed it, too. She isolated them from the rest so they had no reference that is actually the truth of HYBE artists. It's pretty much a Fifty Fifty situation from last year (only these members were not also heavily abused). Keena only noticed because she noticed a disptach article that showed she had been scammed out of copyright fees for Cupid. So she investigated and got her father on her side. She also tried to convince the other members but those were too deep under the influence of their real abuser. Keena left and asked for forgiveness. The new Fifty Fifty will be built around her. Will they be successfull? IDK. But at least she now has a chance. I have no idea what the situation is with the other (ex-)members now. You can't really expect better from New Jeans at the moment. In a few years they are likely to know it, too. But that is in the far future for now. Maybe they are noticing now if they saw her text messages about them. But maybe they believe them to be made up and that court threw them out as lies as some fans believe.

The fact that most people bought mhj press conference is mind boggling to me. Even if her claims of nj being copied were true, (which we see here, they are not and even more ironic SHE was the one who copied and plagiarised others), that doesn’t change these horrifying facts: - is the only one naming names in this whole debate: she was the one that brought up illit, lssrfm names unnecessarily in HER press conference, and that resulted in a massive hate train against minors. Regardless of is she was right and it was true they copied her what she did is using minors as a shield and that is plain wrong, even if she said I have nothing against the girls this is about the adults she is in the Kpop world since a decade, she KNEW what that would do - she still didn’t return the laptop that the company gave her and that the company has every right to have back company property - she brought nj members and their parents into this mess, claiming nj call her to support her, and telling the parents to not answer hybe calls. Which is 101 burning bridges with the company, and nj officially didn’t state anything in favour to mhj, so she saying “they call me to console me” is her using them as a shield, while they themselves didn’t officially want to take a stance, probably because they were (rightfully) advised against it, which was the real smart thing to do.

I try to just watch and not comment since Korean is not my native language. But I will say this.... I am a child of the 80s - so I have noticed that when KPOP started majority of the music was not original but just taken from western music. Back then it was easier to do this under the radar because Korean music was not as global. But now that KPOP is more popular, the old formulas that worked for those companies can no longer apply if they want to sustain a global presence. I still notice alot of music and concepts that are taken from "classics". Now there is nothing wrong with using concepts, art, or music for inspiration but when you take someone's work and not give credit that is plagiarism. Just like writing a paper and noting the sources. So with this case, it just may open a bigger can of worms that may heavily impact the whole KPOP industry practice as a whole.

For weeks they have pointed the finger at Illet and other groups, claiming that they were plagiarizing their dance moves. concepts and style. MHJ was so original in creative direction that everyone else need to stop copying her. The definition for hypocrisy is “the practice of claiming to have moral standards or beliefs to which one's own behavior does not conform;” The creative team and MHJ owe Illet and the other groups they have dragged through the mud a big apology.

Adding BP in this conversation is such a sneak. BP is no where near BTS, not in terms of music, artistry, achievements, awards, popularity or anything else. They're definitely big in Kpop and as a gg but BTS is bigger than the entire kpop industry put together. They're the biggest group, not kpop or bg, but the biggest group on the planet and one of the biggest artists of all times. Also it did not take BP years to become successful, just like NJ they started out privileged, from one of the big 3, just like NJ, YG also used to promote BP as the Next BTS. NJ and BP are more similar than you might realise and they definitely can be considered as competition to one another. However none of them are touching BTS.

And this is what BP's management and fans have been doing since forever, riding off of BTS to appear bigger than they are. And read your oc again, you didn't specify bg, gg and that is besides the point. Leave the so called gg title aside and BP is not even in the top20 biggest groups let alone artists. When BTS is the biggest group of all times and one of the biggest artists in the world currently despite being in a hiatus since 2022. BP is not the girl version of BTS, they're not the next BTS stop this bs. This is the problem Army's have with NJs, this is the problem we have with BP and any other group that keeps riding off of BTS's name.

@stargazing2628 Okay, tell me, who's the biggest girl group ? Term in sale, endorsement deals, sold-out concerts. I didn't say they are on the same level as bts. But they are up there. You created a fanwar when I mentioned Blackpink and Bts in the same sentence. You are the one starting to give biographies of bts. I never said Blackpink was better than Bts. I just said MHJ thought that newjeans was on the same level as Blackpink or Bts on term on their individual success.

Wonder what the korean general public opinion now that this is all slowly coming out. What MHJ did was exposed herself to a very open public scrutiny about her past works and thats not a good thing for her and her future plans. It is starting to crack.

Hope's CNS is a great example of a proper homage imo. i'm sure there are others, but i mentioned his cz it's the one i'm familiar with. spoke about how it's a homage, contacted the original artist, paid royalties, and even the artist big upped it and mentioned how they got their pay for their work. talking about how it's a homage after so long and only cz you got caught is not a homage. you're just trying to cover yourself. would've been better to just have kept quiet and try to privately reach out to the artist to at least try and work things out now, even if it's only cz you got caught, a least you'd be doing it now. it's never too late to do the right thing.

Today, there is too much kpop groups without any originality. Kpop becomes boring and a lot of fans are hysteric and agressive.

Kpop was never original, almost everything was and is inspired from black music, western music industry and Jpop. There's very few groups that had and have originality, BTS being the biggest example. Their originality and authenticity is part of the reason that made them an anomaly in Kpop and the entire music industry.

You are talking about how "K-pop" was from the very beginning. In fact there are more creative elements. That creative artists like BTS, Seventeen and Stray Kids are successfull is good. Fans have attacked each other even physically since first gen.

@@ruthfischer7615 I'm taking about the New génération of kpop groups. New Boys groups are better than girls groups. BTS are the Best, they paved the way. They will be a legend in the Kpop Industry. They aren't like the others, on another level. 7 talented boys, all together or with their solo albums.

I knew I have saw that outfits in other place! 😅 Jeans is still working as artist over another name, that means they should have asked. They are not that famous and most probably do not have the resources for this kind of legal procedure or nothing even similar to this groups but their property should be respected. Edit. Jeans have answer that they are glad the 2000 are back. It seems they are not taking this serious... 😅 It seems only Ador gets mad about it.

V referenced David Bowie as his influence for Layover, that’s class and how you do it. BTS always gives credit to the original artist as they are usually role models for them. Sure sometimes things slip through the crack and you rely on others for the creatives, and when that happens you apologies and correct the mistake. BTS have NEVER claimed any of the art as original and it shows the difference in class between them and MHJ who is the biggest narcissist I’ve seen in a long time. I’m waiting on Shakattak’s response on the ‘plagiarism’ accusation about NJ’s ‘Bubblegum’ song, they sound similar. Plagiarising music has copyright law in its side, unlike copying concepts.

Give credit where credit is due. I don't care if it's a modern ere artist, or Mozart, acknowledge and give credit for the use of others work. Then everyone is happy and stays out of trouble. Plus, it's the right thing to do. I agree about not dragging these poor young girls . They are victims, period. Whether they and their parents know it or not. However, I fear for their careers over all this as they will have to be viewed as damaged goods, and maybe even not trusted as they clearly backed the wrong horse, but we shall see. I hope they make a public statement through maybe Bang or Big Hit, admitting they were mislead, and will work hard to come back with better music and totally different leadership and walk away from Adore. I feel so bad for these kids and their parents. That awful woman played them all and now they are publicly humiliated, at least in Korea.
