I have a 2013 ram 1500 with the 6 speed automatic transmission. It throws a p740 code at around 40 mph after the transmission is at normal operating temperature. I took it to a transmission shop and they did the oil and filters and a valve body service but it didnt resolve the issue, they said they would have to pull the transmission to investigate further. The error doesnt affect drivability and I've continued to drive regularly. What would you advise as a next step and have you seen this issue?

I started out rotating tires and oil changes, once I proved to my Service Manager I would show up everyday he sent me to St Clair college in Dayton OH for my GM training, when I left the Dealership to be a Trucker 15 years ago I was GM and ASE certified in Electrical, AC, Steering and Suspension, Brakes Manual Transmissions and was working on getting certified for Automatic Transmissions!!!! @@conrailfan6277 I'm sorry to say, diesel mechanics make an incredible amount of money nowadays. Normal semi tractor guys can make that kind of money with a few years of experience. If you get into speciality stuff like emergency generators or food grade equipment the money is well over six figures. Times have definitely changed and I have no idea why auto dealerships like GM can't pay their techs right. Nowadays it is no longer in a companies best interest to reward long standing employees. They will pay a higher starting salary to a new hire with the same amount of experience. The longer a employee stays the more likely they are to get comfortable and not leave so the shop makes way more money off their backs. I guarantee that's exactly what happened to you. My background is in IT networks and I quit that career in rage from figuring this out and how corrupt HR people can become. I then went to continue my dads solo trucking company for 3 years. That got me absolutely nowhere financially but I learned a ton of life lessons that I would have never gotten to experience. I'm now 6 months into turning wrenches on diesel equipment and this type of work is exactly where I want to be. I wish you the best in life and that you find enjoyment in what you do. I am thankful for all truckers and farmers.

@Mark M The guys in our shop make good money, they have to master Volvo and Freightliner trucks plus any and all trailer repair, the older guys though after years of wrenching on Big Trucks tell me it has wore them out!! Good luck in your career too, we need good Truck Mechanics, as for me I've got about 5 years left and I'm retiring and spending missed time with my Grandkids!!

When I swapped the stock 5.7 HEMI intake manifold for the 392 active intake manifold that's when I added a catch can. The 392 intake was brand new...well off of a wrecked 392 car with less then 1000 miles that is. With the active runners I didn't want any oil messing with the intake. That's why I installed a catch can. And yes the 392 intake runners do work, they're controlled with an MSD timer to open at 4800 rpm. If you are familiar with RT Life you can watch his instalation of the 392 intake and during the video he calls me for help with the wiring. 😁

To add about a catch can here, I took my intake manifold off at about 30k miles to port it. The ports on the manifold and heads were all gunked up. Cleaned them thoroughly. I had to pull them again recently for doing some work, only 3,000 miles later, and there's a fair amount of oil already coating and gunking up on the intake ports on the heads - with the catch can installed. Yeah, it's catching oil, but it definitely won't prevent oil build up.

I think that on anything that is direct injected an oil catch can is a must. These engines are well known to build carbon up on the valves the more oil you can keep out of the induction side of the engine the longer you can go between manually cleaning the intake valves. The induction flush kits only clean things up enough to clear up the valve seats and valve stem coking it can get to the point that volumetric efficiency is effected.

Every car needs a catch can the earlier the better. The can keeps the oil from mixing with the gas, air mix keeping your octane rating at a true level. Also it keeps the intake and the back of the valves free from the deposit build up from the heat of burning oil in it. Most people won't even think of these benefits.

I run the mechanical fan delete and V6 fan. I put a 192 degree thermostat and it does very well without a tune or fan temp mod. My oil temps run about 203 even on long trips. It seems to be a sweet point for me. I’ve run it in 98 degree weather but typically I live in a cooler climate to I don’t have to worry about it much.

@@ReignitedAuto I've done it too, but I think I'm still running the stock thermostat. I run to 105C before the fan kicks in, without tweaking tuning. My '12 Ram has a BullyDog programmer and a CAI. I notice no difference in milage or on the butt-dyno, nor throttle response. In the winter I get slightly faster warmup as the mechanical fan isn't pulling in air. Towing a camper in the summer with a headwind it does run a bit hotter. Previous vehicles with a 318LA, I swapped over and it was noticeable.

I typically think catch cans are a waste of time and money, but I installed one for a particular reason. On my oldest 5.7 Hemi (05 180k miles) I removed the cats and installed new mufflers last year. After this I noticed that when I let the engine idle for more than 5 minutes it would puff out a fairly large amount of smoke when I touched the gas pedal to rev it or take off. It was just a single large puff and never smoked otherwise even at full throttle or short idle sessions. I installed a catch can and eliminated the problem

My RT Magnum came with a "heavy duty" radiator. The cars with the tow package and the police cars came with a "Severe duty" radiator which will drop in with no changes. The SRT came with a "Sever Duty II" radiator which will fit but need the larger SRT hoses. I believe the police cars also have an oil cooler which could be retrofited.

If you're considering the fan upgrade for the 4th gen Ram, check out John's video over at Boosted Motorsports. He has 2 or 3 vids on the swap. Couple things to keep in mind: You want the electric fan from the pre-2014 V6 Rams that had the 3.7L V6, not the 3.6L Pentastar V6. The ones with the 3.7L v6 have the same connector as your "helper fan" taht is already on the truck. One thing John states in his vid is that even without a tuner to change the fan-on temp, he was doing just fine in southern CA in the summer with very high ambient temps. I'm betting if you're towing you'd want to reset the fan temp somehow, but then if you're towing it's probably not a great idea to get rid of the more reliable/redundant setup your 4th gen Ram came with!

Forget the catch can use a basic filter to relieve pressure and the oil simply drips back down into the crankcase with no harm to the environment. Any moisture in the oil will evaporate way before it becomes a problem.

If you race your Hemi then get a catch can. The Ford Eco-boost engines are the perfect candidate for a CC. As for fans, I went through this for the last 10 years, if you can activate the fans with the ECU/HVAC naturally, then do it. If you have to use an aftermarket Smart relay with a Temp sensor, skip it. I have been through 3 fans, 2 controllers a battery and an alternator. ..even though I did all the math right, it takes lots of mileage to ensure everything works together right.

One other thing I thought about for the catch can. I discovered this myself -- the pre 09 Ram trucks use an internal pcv valve, so unless you mod/gut the PCV valve (And install a pcv valve elsewhere) a catch can won't work at all. I've heard the 09+ use an external PCV valve, but I haven't seen one, so I can't say for sure.

I have removed the viscous clutch fan from my hemi Ram, with no ill effects. I drive the engine hard and have not had any issues while it was removed as the AC condenser fan would kick in if temps got up. However, I do not tow frequently and live in the Great White North so it might not be a great idea if you live in Florida. I eventually swapped in a V6 Ram electric fan, a 180* thermostat and have a custom tune to keep the engine in optimal temperature for max power(not fuel economy 😐).

Catch cans only benifit direct injection vehicles where fuel is sprayed directly into the cylinder because the blow by oil gums up the back of the valves and intake runners. I put the hellcat oil pump, and lifters with an mds delete and a stock non mds cam back in my Ram 5.7. with so much extra oil pressure, do you think the catch can would benefit this scenario? I don't really have any issues but only a few thousand miles since I've done the cam. As for v6 electric cooling fan, i had done this mod a couple years back because my fan clutch was bad. 180 stat, and fan tuned to 190, it stays nice and cool at idle in traffic and was super easy to do

My most recent is a Ram 1500 with the 5.7 and MDS. The Ram catch can collects far more oil than the others did. My catch can will be all the way full at 3k miles. Just a few thoughts I had, and I completely agree Sky, if we all marched to the same drum, we'd all be driving the exact same thing and modding the same way, and it would be very boring! On the catch can, I think if you are going to leave the engine alone, then there's no point. If you are going to tune it, and are trying to get the last bit of timing on it, then I do think it is helpful. For example, many people running the Ford Racing power pack tunes for NA Mustang 5.0's actually encounter audible pinging, even when running the correct higher octane needed for the tune. Although a catch can is not required in the tune, Ford Racing actually recommends owners that have the pinging problem to run a Ford Racing catch can. Of course, some engines blow by more than others, and some tunes are more aggressive than others. I would say though, if I had a car with only direct injection, and a known problematic valve deposit issue (Audi v8's, BMW N54, etc.) then I would definitely put on a catch can if nothing else to help keep the backsides of the valves clean. I agree on the coolant temp issue. You actually get slightly higher efficiency (Power and fuel consumption) with more heat. That being said, one other way to help cool more is to increase the temperature picked up and shed by the existing system. Pure water is better than 50/50 anti-freeze mix for shedding heat, however it does so at the expense of zero lubrication properties, and also cracked blocks if you live where it gets cold. However, if you dilute it below 50%, you can get a little better efficiency. Also, you can use something that reduces the surface tension of the water (Like Water Wetter) and that helps dissipate heat slightly better as well. Of course these things will only be apparent if your existing system is maxed out. If your car can stay at 190 degrees with the fan duty cycle at 70% and the thermostat partially closed, then the water wetter isn't going to do a whole lot other than lower the duty cycle of the fan and close up the thermostat more. However, if everything is 100% duty cycle and the thermostat is wide open, and you can only hit 200, then yeah playing with the coolant concentration and water wetter might help you shed a few more degrees. But again, I wouldn't bother. On the pedal commander thing -- if a tune costs you $500 and a pedal commander costs you $300, I would say to go with a tune way more than a pedal commander because the pedal commander only fools the computer that you're pressing the pedal more (Faster). Whereas on a tune, not only does the computer map what the pedal request is and the commanded throttle, but it also is used in other calculations like if an automatic, when to shift. Also many cars now have a different "curve" for different settings (e.g. ice/normal/track). I've found that wimpy cars ramp up the throttle commanded way to early (e.g. you push pedal 40% but you get 100% throttle) in an effort to make the car feel more powerful. But on the same regard, a lot of powerful cars are the opposite, very lazy for the first 24% or so....to use less gas and fetch better EPA MPG numbers. Also on the tune, you can change things related to throttle that a pedal commander can't do, such as WOT delay, and the like.

He changed oil every 5,000 miles with full synthetic. No my wife had a 2010 Challenger R/T classic. I but a catch can on it. I change oil every 3,000 Miles, with Full Synthetic. At 3,000 miles the Catch can. Was Full all the way to the top, every time. Now my 2016 Hellcat and my 2019 Redeye WB. Both had catch cans on them. In 3,000 miles they only had, around a 1/8 of can of oil in them.

The only must have for a catch can is in a direct injection engine regardless if it is diesel or gasoline. As a commercial tech that deals with diesel engines from 3.5 to 15 liter and a few gasoline engines, the new diesel engines for the past couple years are all with their own catch and return system. The worst gasoline engines to go without a catch can are the direct injection engines gasoline, and why ford now has 16 injectors on the 5.0 mustangs since they went DI on them. 8 DI and 8 upstream. Ford learned the hard way that their DI engines intakes clogged up bad and fast. And with how ford is going down hill with their engine designs is why I traded my 5.0 Stang in for the Ram 5.7, less complicated engines to worry about in the long term. But when FCA phases out all HEMIs I will have no choice to go electric before I go DI again, unless they integrate a catch and return system.

What about a high mileage engine with excessive blow by? Would a catch can help or benefit me if I know I'm burning lots of oil
@ReignitedAuto
@ReignitedAuto 2 жыл бұрын
You know, that's actually a good question. I would say yes because the valves get coked up bad if you're burning excessive oil, but I'll also say that if you are, you need to be checking the catch can every few days, because it's likely to fill up very quickly, and you don't want that oil to start pouring down the intake on its own if the can fills all the way up.

How does this info cause predetination ? does anybody study fuel flashpoints ? " high octane " fuel has a " higher flash point " meaning it does not ignite quite as easy thus allowing the engine to not preignite its fuel. before proper timing / compression is acheived , which will cause a " knock " called predetination . most modern engines have " knock" sensors to prevent this. So my question would be since when does oil have a lower flashpoint than gas. even with a certain amount of gas vapor is built up in the crankcase venting as well as carbon? Normally what occurs with excessive crankcase pressures is gunk and plug fowling. The theory of causing predetination makes no sense to me please explain

Ok i have a question... I've shared a few posts about my hemi stroker build in my 2008 ram. Similar builds are pushing 650hp on a holley terminator from a crate. Do I need a custom ECU for this build or tis the 2008 ram one good enough? Some advice I am having trouble believing is that stock ECUs are "good to tune to 1000 HP". I have also heard that dodge ECUs are better than many others. Is there any advantage to the Holley terminator in my build? Is it just etxra expense? Can it do on-the-fly tune changes? ie from race to eco tune, without powering down vehicle? could the dodge one do that with some programming magic? If i did install the terminator, i see it has can-bus hookup... so...? it would integrate with the canbus system of my truck? throw codes on my dash, ect? would it replace the stock ECU or would the sock ECU be left in to make the can-bus system happy? I like options and features... if it can do something for me, im happy to buy it. just give me a reason....

I can understand what you are saying. The whole point if this video though is to point out that you're not preventing anything that's harmful to your engine. 99% of the vehicles on the road today don't have catch cans on them, and yet they run just fine. My point was so what if you're getting oil vapors/buildup in your intake and in the valves. I've never once in my whole career seen an engine failure caused by that. Sure it makes things gross and sticky, doesn't affect the way it functions in the least. As mentioned, it's a different story if you're trying to make big power, but for an everyday driver in don't understand the rationale to give yourself another task of maintenance with emptying the catch can every month or so. Just personal preference I guess.

That excerpt about high rpm engines needing a catch can can be debunked by motorcycles. For example my old R6 has the crankcase hose directly attached to the air filter housing which is 3 inches away from the valves. The engine redlines at 15,500k rpm. Stays between 5 and 15k rpm in races for 30+ mins. No such detonation ever takes place.

Crankcase ventilation systems are rapidly evolving, and becoming more complicated. Turbocharged engines are also becoming more common. Honestly, whatever you drive, hammer it hard like once a week, get on the highway, and floor it on the on ramp. Better than slow driving, and short tripping a gasoline engine is the worst thing you can do.

PCV is an emission device that was mandated in the 1960 model year. Prior to that, the crankcase vented to the atmosphere. My concern is the lack of lead in today's fuel to protect the valves, how much of that oil mist is used to provide upper cylinder lubrication. With billions spent on R&D, why wouldn't the manufacturers install oil catch cans?
