There was a costumer in a power chair. She was able to walk up onstage but it was quite difficult for her. I knew in advance that I couldn't do stairs while wearing a house so I wasn't upset about it, and I agree that accommodating those who have no choice is more important.

There's law for how steep a ramp for wheelchair users! Usually it's 1:12, one foot rise in 12 feet distance

ADA has building codes for all aspects of physical disabilities. Having had an uncle and an aunt in wheelchairs, and being a builder, it is foremost important to help the disabled first. Everything else comes after. But the codes are there.

@@chuckkincaid986 The room is accessible but the stage, which is probably temporary, was not. I assume that modular ramps exist to go with those stage platforms, though if the stage is provided by the convention venue they may or may not own ramps to provide. I also don't know if ADA codes apply to temporary structures.

What was wrong with calling it a puppet? That thing is amazing and to me it was a puppet more than costume. An amazing puppet, but how is that an insult? I love puppets.

@@ajosepi1976 I don't think it's so much calling it a puppet, but specifically dismissing it as one.

@@daalelli How is it dismissing it as a puppet? That makes no sense to me. Puppet creation is harder than costumes in a lot of ways. You have to have the kinematics down AND a costume/skin over that. Puppets are fantastic. Again AMAZING costume/puppet.

I think Adam considers that gatekeeping because it says that, folks that inhabit puppets are not cosplaying their character, and Adam refuses to draw a line saying that's not cosplay. ETA quotes.

Full armor and mascot suits are some of the most intimidating builds you can do. I've been cosplaying for 10 years and I'm just now going to do my second armored character (first was a breastplate and pauldrons, this is a lorica segmentata). I still haven't done a full armor or mascot suit. The advice I'd give if you know you want to do a full suit eventually is find a character with just one piece of the type of thing you want to do, like a helmet or an arm or something, and use that character to get an idea of how to build that. Another option would be to build the most complicated single section of your character (as a test/learning project/possible display piece), but I personally find having to rebuild things I've already made frustrating. Also, look for tutorials and build videos, even about things that are just kinda similar. It'll help you get an idea of construction techniques, especially for connecting the pieces to the internal frame.

A sharp knife, contact cement and polyfoam exercise mats make great armour, hot air gun to shape it. Plenty of vids on painting and effects. Made a Stig Helmet for the kid's costume. Next time it will be even faster. There is even special foam now just for cosplay.

@@alwayscensored6871 Thank you so much for the help! I was kind of hoping for something more rigid so that 3d printed elements wouldn't look quite so out of place, but using polyfoam mats would be perfect and cheaper for a first pass at the costume!

@@GRACEFULMASH well the reason I wanted to ask him was because Adam savage has been involved in this company and visits often so I wanted to get his opinion on if it’s a good place to work as well And also because I have a bad habit about never thinking I’m good enough to do things like that so I wanted some advice on good skills to have or to get/work on to be able to get the right job. I get what you’re saying but I’m not looking for anyone’s permission to do anything. And I don’t think opinions are 100% bad as long as you can think for yourself as well. I find it to be helpful to seek advice from experienced creators in the same field so you can better know for yourself it’s what you really want🤷‍♂️

Yeah, Big Bird or Sweetums isn't any more or less a Muppet than Kermit or Beaker just because there's someone completely inside him as opposed to just an arm. Likewise a Skeksis or a Gelfling. Daleks are certainly cosplay too, even though their points of articulation are few.

I hear you, and the ones I would be interested in are pretty elaborate and require skills I do not have to boot. One day, perhaps.

I hate being a naysayer, but you'd need a huge amount of helium to make much of a difference. Look up the mythbuster episode on filling footballs with helium.
