My daughter feels very nervous when people are staring at her. We both walk the neighborhood on halloween night, in costume. She felt nervous about it until I told her that they are not staring at her, they are staring at her costume. It made a huge difference.

I love that question about negative space, or as I call it "hiding in plain sight" Thank you for the mention of my K2 and BD-1. When you cannot disguise the puppeteer or performer minimizing their presence is really all you can do. War Horse is a great example of this with the "head" controlling puppeteer dressing in period garb, not an all-black suit. Tho sometimes I wish I had a cape on K-2SO. He'd look good in a cape.

During social therapy for Aspergers Syndrome, the one thing we got stuck on was understanding that anxiety never really goes away, you just learn how to manage it. I struggeld with that for so long before, for some reason, I was watching Kevin Smith do standup (not really but it was so funny it might as well have been) and I had an epiphany moment as he was ranting about something he was so passionate about that I realized; no one cares. Everyone is so preoccupied with their own lives that you don't have to worry about what anyone else is thinking, just enjoy the things you love and explore them however you want! I wish more people spoke as passionately about the things they love as Kevin Smith does

What I love about cosplay is the creativity found within it - whether that be still doing a cosplay even with a specific budget limit, talent or item restrictions (meaning not knowing how to do elaborate electronics or what have you), body size, weight limits, etc. You took the time to make something that you're super passionate about and did it with whatever constraints you had to deal with. That's part of it's charm to me, at least.

Even Disney has a long history of playing with negative space like this - I think they really started with the Broadway Lion King production, but they have also brought some of that design into the parks. The Nemo stage show is probably the best-known example at Disney World but during the holidays they bring out these lovely winter animal puppets at Animal Kingdom for guests to interact with. Those animals are magnetic and charming and don't suffer even a little bit from being connected to a human performer. This fall Disney debuted a new puppet Jack Skellington for their Halloween Party fireworks show that is absolutely incredible. Rumor has it they may be using this puppet style in future meet-and-greets as the current Jack Skellington costume is a bit uncanny.

As a person bringing the huge elaborate costume to the con, believe you me, I'm nervous! When you've built a cosplay, no matter what level you're at, and you display it right on your person, that's a super vulnerable thing!

There's always going to be someone with a "better" cosplay than you and there's always going to be someone with a "worse" cosplay than you. There is no where more inclusive than a Con because we are all just an isle of misfit toys looking for a place we belong. I used the words "worse" and "best" because they worked, not because there is any superiority on the floor. I think comparing your cosplay is tricky, because you don't want to talk down about yourself. For a lot of people, putting that costume on is the highlight of their year. We all just have to remember we are in a place where we all belong. There's room for everyone at the Con.

When it comes to "Gatekeeping" it's good to remember that the biggest gatekeeper in your in own life is yourself, and all it takes to start something new is to *TRY* not to stand in your own way, if you're truly passionate about (insert new thing here) you'll learn and eventually you'll be good at it. TLDR: Don't be afraid to fail, failure is just practice and practice makes perfect.

I've had a burning desire for a while to start in on a cosplay of the robot in my profile pic (they're from a game called Creature in the Well). The problem is that 1: it would be a very extensive build to make up all these disconnected pieces of armor and find a way to attach them to an internal "black" frame, and 2: this is the first cosplay I've seriously considered, and I want to get started in without the proper tools I probably need to do it, without taking the time to learn on other, less demanding cosplays.

Full armor and mascot suits are some of the most intimidating builds you can do. I've been cosplaying for 10 years and I'm just now going to do my second armored character (first was a breastplate and pauldrons, this is a lorica segmentata). I still haven't done a full armor or mascot suit. The advice I'd give if you know you want to do a full suit eventually is find a character with just one piece of the type of thing you want to do, like a helmet or an arm or something, and use that character to get an idea of how to build that. Another option would be to build the most complicated single section of your character (as a test/learning project/possible display piece), but I personally find having to rebuild things I've already made frustrating. Also, look for tutorials and build videos, even about things that are just kinda similar. It'll help you get an idea of construction techniques, especially for connecting the pieces to the internal frame.

@@alwayscensored6871 Thank you so much for the help! I was kind of hoping for something more rigid so that 3d printed elements wouldn't look quite so out of place, but using polyfoam mats would be perfect and cheaper for a first pass at the costume!

Their budget was so low they would have had no option but to improvise, adapt and "lash up". Which means it won't take much to get it right for your first Con.. puppetry is totally cosplay its not like making a sculpture and wheeling it around and calling that cosplay. the only definition id attribute to cosplay is simply "living" as in bringing a thing to life. the moment you add any interactivity to that sculpture the line becomes blurred and the more you add the more the line disappears. (i will put up the gate that putting it on a cart is not interactivity, sorry adam)

The WHOLE POINT OF COSPLAY IS YOU ARE NOT REALLY YOU so worrying about what people think of YOU is illogical, once people want to interact with your costume and THEN talk with you it's POSITIVE and you should NOT be scared or nervous but happy as shyt someone really likes it. Only reaon I ever get nervous is during a CONTEST where I'm being judged vs other ARTISTS and how well my work holds up and my skills. Also DO NOT try cosplaying as a character who's physique is completely unlike yours, ie you are 5ft and trying to pretend you are LeBron James or Darth Vader UNLESS you proportion it or admit you are just replicating A LOOK not EXACT pretending you ARE, like the way I've seen scrawny Kal Drogos or middled aged plump Daenrys
