Through my experience, I don't think older Koreans like the ajusshis and ajummas in their late 40s~50s are all that understanding when it comes to a person of Korean decent not being able to speak Korean. It happened to me twice on different occasions where a random ajusshi got angry at me and my girl friend for speaking English to the store clerck. They both went on a rampage about how bad of a country the US was, full of bigotry and that we should respect our heritage by learning proper Korean. We explained that we weren't from the US nor have Korean parents, but we got scolded all the same for not being able to speak Korean. Both events happened like shortly within the first month that I was in Korea so I don't know if it was a fluke that I happened to encounter 2 people who apparently had some bad experience with America or that most older people are like that. But it has me walking on egg shells still until today when a Korean samchon comes around.

My Great great-grandparents (mom side) came from South Korean (I'm 20 turning 21 soon ) so I'm basically 25% Korean 75% Hispanic ( 25% from Spain 50% Ecuador ) PS: my mom forgot about the Korean traditions and I wasn't into Korean stuff until i moved to the US and my mom told me to visit Korea town (I live in NYC ) and she made me try so many stuff and I slowly got into Korean stuff such as food, traditions, culture, music and language. Now I'm learning Korean and trying to see if can find my old Korean roots and family so it's gonna be a long journey for me ...

If a lot of Koreans were like Hyojin my life here as a Korean American would be so much easier. I don't mean that everyone should speak English, but she seems very open minded and very down to earth. A lot of times I wish I could be a complete foreigners like a white guy instead of being Korean American. Even though I can speak relatively ok, perhaps junior high school level or lower, I fake completely not knowing at all because if I can speak and understand korean but I don't understand what they are saying they will frown at me, with a look of confusion/disappointment/frustration, but when I fake not knowing Korean at all I get treated much better. And they actually try to speak English. I think to most Koreans there is no such thing as "kinda knowing Korean'. It's either you know it well or you don't know it at all.

As a Mexican America living in Chicago, and loving Korea as much as I do even thought I have not been there in my life I feel terrible when there is a soccer game between Korea vs Mexico. I love Mexico because of my heritage, but I became in love with Korea for a strange reason, and it is hard to take a position for me. It happened during the soccer Olympics' game when both groups were in the podium. And also last week when both teams played here in America!

I think your experience in Korea will depend on: 1. How much of korean language and culture you know or willing to learn. 2. The reason you're going to Korea. If you're going to work there, then the job is very important. 3. Which people you hang out w/ (e.g. expats vs. the locals). #2 may influence this greatly. 4. How foreign you look or act. (Be ready for stares if you don't look Korean at all) 5. How open-minded you are and I guess what I would call your cultural intelligence/adaptability. With that said, I say definitely go for it!

This month, January, i went to an amusement park and a hot spring resort here in the Philippines and there are a lot of Koreans there. It's about 30% of the people in that park and overs 50% of people in the resort are Korean. I just notice that they are not talking to other groups of Korean even if they are right next to them in the line, they don't even smile to each other. (I just find it weird because if a Filipino finds a Filipino in another country, they will usually chat about a lot of things) . I really wonder why they don't talk... So talking to strangers is not common in Korea. Finally, I got the answer to my question. :) It's a matter of culture differences.

I live in the states, and I've always wondered why Koreans (and other Asians) tend to only hang out with each other. They seem to be the only ones that haven't integrated (friend wise) with other Americans. In a general sense, I know there are individual cases. Is there a cultural reason for this?
@faliandra7659
@faliandra7659 10 жыл бұрын
yeah, I fully agree. During my 2 years I spent in Toronto, I noticed the same. It's all the asians, especially indians and the likes, who are like only hanging out with each other. In Germany, on the other hand, where I come from, it's not like this. But that is probably because we dont have as many immigrants from Asia and Europeans are pretty much the same, mentality-wise. Well, I think its sad cos I enjoy different cultures and I wish I couldve made friends with some Asians!
@Xilen7
@Xilen7 10 жыл бұрын
It's easier for Asian-Americans to get and understand each other because they share a lot of cultural stuff with each other. Staple food is rice, family is very important, festivals, etc. Plus, Asians are generally shy.. So they get along better with equally 'shy' people.

My wife is Korean and goes to school with a lot of Koreans. Her friends do want to have American friends but feel very scared to interact with Americans. Most worry that their English won't be good enough: worried they can't get their point across 100%, or that an American will look down on them because their English isn't 100%, etc. There are a lot of cultural differences as well, which they find it may be difficult to overcome, but most just worry about the language barrier. The do not want to even make one language mistake at all, since they have a high pride to not be looked down on.

I also think it depends on which part of the U.S. you live and also which generation of Asians they are. Most asian people I know have a 50-50 split b/t Asian friends and all other ethnicities, which is not bad imo. It also may be that they are all Asian that they stand out to you but when there's only one Asian in a group it doesn't get noticed as much.
