Q&A session lead by Swami Sarvapriyananda as part of a spiritual retreat at the Vedanta Society of New York on April 29th, 2018.
List of Questions with Timestamps:
0:48 -- Acharyas repeatedly say You are That Infinite Existence, I am the Awareness
Absolute etc. Who is the ""I"" and ""you"" that the teaching is referring to? Whom or what
experiences whom or what?
8:43 -- What is ""citta""? What is the difference between ""citta"" and ""consciousness""?
18:28 -- Everything we do is prompted by thoughts, which are the functions of the
mind. So how does one experience Consciousness in its purity without the mind?
27:17 -- What works the mind if Pure Consciousness is not affected by the material
world, and is only the Witness? What is it that enjoys the senses, the body, or the
mind?
30:58 -- a) Nirguna Brahman is manifested in a body. Who decides that body (as in
the case of Sri Ramakrishna, other Avatars/Incarnations of God etc.)?
b) Does this Avatar/Incarnation concept contradict the Advaitic idea of ""That Thou
Art""?
37:45 -- a) What makes the difference between the mind of Swami Vivekananda and
my mind? If the mind of a saint is pure, what purified it? Did Pure Conciousness
purify it?
b) In that case, I am the same Pure Consciousness. Why doesn't it purify me?
42:23 -- When the body is damaged or dies, only this body stops working. Why does
it lose its Consciousness?
45:01 -- How do memory or samskaras travel from one birth to another? If mind and
body are destroyed, where does the samskara get stored?
47:49 -- Does Awareness always need a vehicle for it to exist?
51:47 -- How do you avoid pride in the path of Advaita?
59:50 -- Shravana, manana, nidhidhyasana (hearing, pondering, assimilating). These
constitute the method by which one realizes Brahman (if one has good fortune). If
that happens, then one should be filled with Bliss. And if a person thinks that he has
had that realization, but is not filled with Bliss, then one can conclude that he did not
have the realization. Correct?
1:02:49 -- What is the exact meaning/significance of ""Om"" in relation to the Mandukya
Upanishad?
1:09:15 -- a) How can we approach everyday activities at various stages of our life
with an attitude of service, and in a manner that avoids undue stress and brings
peace?
1:09:53 -- b) How do we carry on the daily activities of life without stress, without strain?
1:18:39 -- a) What is the difference between ""kuladevi"" (family deity) and ""isha devata""
(chosen deity)?
1:20:22 -- b) What is the significance (if any) of various experiences had during meditation
(vibrations, sounds, colors, bright light, darkness etc.)?
1:22:33 -- a) Is what I experience right now the appearance OF reality, or appearance AS
reality? Why doesn't Reality reveal Itself in its originality? For that matter, why don't (or can't)
we see the Reality as It is?
1:25:22 -- b) Why does the play of Consciousness give so many negative experiences
(sorrow, suffering, pain, fear, frustration, failure, boredom etc.)?
1:28:07 -- c) Doesn't the experience of Maya run counter to the principle of nondualism, or
is Maya also a part of Reality? If so, how?

ABOUT VEDANTA
Vedanta is one of the world’s most ancient religious philosophies and one of its broadest. Based on the Vedas, the sacred scriptures of India, Vedanta affirms the oneness of existence, the divinity of the soul, and the harmony of religions.
ABOUT US
Vedanta Society of New York is affiliated with the Ramakrishna Order of India. In fact, this is the Order's first Center started by Swami Vivekananda, in 1894. It was a historic event, for the seed of the world-wide Ramakrishna Movement was sown here in New York over a century ago. Swami Sarvapriyananda is the present Resident Minister and Spiritual Leader of the Vedanta Society of New York.

Exciting session indeed! It gives direct answers - convincing, clear and crisp - to the queries of seriously spiritually inclined people. Feeling Thakur's grace being showered on us as we are getting the opportunity to listen to this amazing teacher!! And yes, M. the enlightened disciple too tells Thakur: "God has created you with His own hands, whereas He has made others by machine. All others He has created according to law." @47:48 The question describes the understanding of panpsychism, which is materialist / reductionist. It is all the rage today for scientists and such because it keeps their metaphysics of materialism and it seems to solve some of the mystery of consciousness.

Swamiji, according to Bhagvan Ramana Maharishi, the Karta is 'ego'. We, the consciousness, is the Sakshi. Therefore, it is suggested that whatever actions need to happen by one's prarabdha, will happen. One can dissociate from them as a Sadhana. The ego on enquiry disappears, and we realize that it never did really exist. This understanding when taken to its logical conclusion is what promos the Sage to say that 'Nothing has ever happened '. If we accept Sankhya's understanding [about purusha/ prakriti] it gives credence to a little self. Which understanding is more correct?

Swamiji pranam if I am witnessing vrittis in my mind who is me at that time... is it intellect or directly... reflected conscious... isn't it jeewaatma... pure consciousness is still far... is this reasoning correct... 🙏
@abhimanyuganguly
@abhimanyuganguly 6 жыл бұрын
Pure consciousness is not individual. When you say you are witnessing the vrittis in the mind, think carefully- is that an individual? If so, it's not the pure consciousness. It's the consciousness reflected in the ego or ahamkara which makes it seem aware. It makes it feel the first person inner experience. To answer the question straight, it's the reflected consciousness. Bottom line is is if it feels an individual, an unit, it's not pure consciousness

Abhimanyu Ganguly .... then isn't it a round about answer that... it is vijnanamaya kosha... so during manana... the reference with respect to which it is done is still unreal I... the false ego... or jeewatma...

@abhimanyuganguly 6 жыл бұрын
Poornima, yes ... its something I am struggling with.... swamiji says in his drig drisya viveka lecture that you use any thought you have to become aware of the reflected consciousness... so far so good ... and then he says use that as a pointer to the real consciousness that YOU are... this part isn't clear at all ... at least to me. I think I am still failing to grasp what in the reflected consciousness gives you that pointer that its actually reflected, not real. The second part to the problem is , the sense of 'I' is all about the reflected consciousness. I don't get how the real consciousness can give the sense of 'I'

I heard in one of his lecture the same question, he then tells a story of one vedic scholar who kept on arguing over the concept of rebirth. The scholar then goes to an advaitin enlightened person who replies "when there is no birth then how can there be a rebirth". I think the title of video was birthless death or something

Of course Samsara is important. Anything that can happen can happen only in it. Why does it appear? Do this: close your eyes, now hold out your hands and with the top of your fingers explore your face. Try to form an image of it by touch. The fingers are we in the world trying to figure out Brahman, so that Brahman through us can know itself.

Respected sarvapriyanadaji , You said while telling that first step in vedanta is that atma n anatma vivek. So I m different from world. Then there is no existence of world apart from our consciousness. You gave example of book and clock(lecture -26 jan 2018). So world is in my awareness. But presently as I m in india I m not aware of happenings of America still lot of things are happening or existing there. For that I think ultimately consciousness is one ,means my or American's ultimate consciousness is one and the same. So even I am not aware then consciousness appearing there as an American guy is aware of happenings or existence of America. So America is existing in that American guy's consciousness. But according to history of universe , earth , life which dates something 14, 4.0 , 3.5 billion years respectively. So before life ,earth was existing. So before consciousness ,earth was existing. I mean before 3.5 billion years ago there was protozoa kind of life. It was in its consciousness world was appearing. But what before it. In whose consciousness world was appearing. Because world existed still before existence of life. If brahman was appearing as universe at that time also , then in whose consciousness it was appearing. If it is lila then for whom that lila was there. As there is no life there. Even if as vivekanada said consciousness is everywhere , it is apperaring or expressing in us more and lesser in non living beings. So why brahman appeared or expressed itself as in lesser way before first life.For whom that world existed before 4 billion years ago. I would be very happy and grateful for your reply.
@ashutoshmalguri
@ashutoshmalguri 6 жыл бұрын
Pure consciousness(brahman) does not need a body to exist but in it the body and the universe exist. You and the american guy both exist IN the pure consciousness/awareness but you are identified with your mind and body and american is identified with his and so experience your limited and separate experiences. When you break this false identification through yoga/vedanta etc you will find that there is no sachin and american guy but these are just projections projected by maya in pure consciousness or brahman. Brahman does not appear, the world as we know(universe,planets,life,time,space) appear In Brahman the sat-chit-ananda(existance-consciousness-bliss) I hope this helps brother.

thanks for replying. It really made me more clear. I do agree that World exist in pure consciousness not in reflected consciousness. but still not able to understand why it exists at all. It is said it exists in vyavaharik satta and not in parmarthik satta . then why there is vyavaharik satta i.e relative world and pratibhasik satta i.e dream state.it was said it is lila. Then before 4 billion years ago , for nearly 10 billion years ! there was no life. Then why world existed then , I mean for 10 billion years.

@@sachintajne, the world does not exist separate from you. So his do you know that there are a lot of things going on in America? From the news on television or the internet? This too is only appearing to you in you're awareness. Or do you only suppose that there is a real America where things are happening right now when you are not there? That then is your mind creating an imagined world from your suppositions. In your dream if you step into the bathroom and close the door behind you, is there really a room on the other side where your family is sitting and a lot of things are going on? In the waking state it works exactly like that! 😘
