In this excerpt from the October 2019 episode of Ask the Vet ( • Ask the Vet - Long ter... ), Dr. Gray and SmartPaker Dan talk about the use of Equioxx in riding horses past the 14-days that the label recommends. Dr. Gray explains the very serious reasons why you need to talk to your vet if you’re going to use Equioxx longer than what the label says, the first signs that your horse is having an adverse reaction to it, and surprisingly, the proper way to pronounce the name!

It has given my old gelding his life back. He is on it long term so far so good.

Going on probably 4 years of Novox...clean blood work 2x a year. He's 32 and his arthritis is such that if he stops tolerating it then he will not be able to have good quality of life, so I'm glad for any time I can have.

My horse was on it for a couple of years and he got leaky gut syndrome. I called the manufacturer of equioxx and their vet said on the label horses should only take it for 14 days. I told her my horse had leaky butt and lose stools and asked her if other horses have gotten that. She said yes, there are some horses that have gotten issues with the gut. She also told me to stop the equioxx and have the vet check him out. It's been over a year since he's been off the equioxx and his leaky gut is pretty much cleared up. I have friends whos horse has been on it for a long time and they do really good on it. My horse is very sensitive to everything 😪

My horse has been on it for 5 months and he is very comfortable and no more limping, but!!! I have noticed he drinks a lot of water and urinates a lot more. Now my fear is that perhaps he has kidney damage. Next I am going to have my vet do blood work- and I’m praying it’s just from boredom and I’ll just need to get him out more often.

So risk averse. Do vets think we risk the health of our horses with long term use of nsaids because we don’t care? Needs must for long term use if the alternative is pts due to pain, which in itself can cause ulcers! I’d rather mine have a comfortable retired life than a life full of arthritic pain which leads to circulatory issues, greater arthritic pain and colic because the horse won’t move. That in itself would shorten life without nsaids. We have to be pragmatic about this.
