As someone who moved to SF 6 months ago, I can’t stress how underpaid many people are. I work in healthcare and make 100k however my rent is 3k for a small studio, which is actually pretty cheap for this area. I pay 36k in rent and that’s NOT including utilities. Heck even a parking spot is $300/month. Now, living in SF, I also get taxed like crazy for city benefits (literally half my paycheck). And with other things like medical bills, food, etc…it’s impossible. So yeah I’m barely making it here.

That software engineer did not reveal his base salary, bonus and RSU and only stated his TC (Total Compensation). If he works at FAANG with his degree and years of experience, his TC is NOT $230k to $270k. He just purely optimistically estimated that low range, which in reality it is below $200k from last year.
@mickeymacke1780

270k for a first year is hilarious and you can tell he pulled that number out his ass. He's likely making 130-150k base at a FAANG and *maybe* hits 190-200k with bonus and RSUs.

It's not uncommon to make over $100k. It's just the majority don't. But for most cities, $100k income is only tip 20% of earners. So 1/5 make over. That's is a lot of people. I probably wouldn't use few or very few until we started talking about 1% salaries.

As a multiple decade resident of San Francisco it doesn't surprise me at all to hear that most of the highly paid folks work in tech, and anyone working with humans makes less. As a substance and mental health counselor working in the HIV field for many years I find this a frustrating fact of life in the US. Wish it could be more equal. It's difficult to keep up with bills and expenses and try to save anything. I like this channel and the concept of salary transparency. One suggestion might be to go to all different neighborhoods, not just the financial district.

Tech industry is misleading. one can make lots of money in the private tech industry but things can change overnight because it's constantly evolving into the next big thing. You can be making 270k one year and laid off the next. Companies are in a foot race to corner the next big thing in technology. not to mention a lot of jobs are being outsourced. Always some new idea on the horizon. AI is a perfect example. how it looks today will be nothing like how it will look 5 years from now.
