The interface tool and the content are being confused. Virtual reality is an interface. It isn’t content. The problem up to now is that the content accessed through the virtual tool has been dog doodoo. Make the content great and people will use the interface tool. Take Zoom for example, it is a form of VR or AR (take your pick) in that it sets up a virtual meeting room. People value the content accessed through zoom (ie. needed meetings) and so they use the tool.

you're not wrong about the importance of content, but the tool also has to be accessible and working. And so far this is just not the case. You can have the best content in the world, if the tool is too expensive, or the usability isn't there it becomes a barrier. So far they are clunky, expensive head sets no one wants to wear for hours. As an example, when the iPhone came out, social media took off after, not before. KZfaq, Twitter, Facebook were already there, but smartphones, an easy to use, for almost everyone accessible tool made it a mass phenomenon.

Yes, vr and ipads will be the future. I feel like we get an insight of this in the entertainment industry, and how much procedural and node based graphics are on a rise, precisely from the need to separate off resolution. The tools for the people that want to make entertainment are moving to this, eventually the user experience will move to this. It’s like everyone now liking fantasy and superheroes. Edit: I wrote this before the apple twist, but yeah a lot of the decisions to position the ipad as THE home device or device for the kids, is Tim Cook. Now they are making their own silicon, in the us.

VR as a whole I find interesting, but for me a few things make the metaverse and most VR in general a hard sell, such as VR sickness, cost being unreasonably high for many people, and lack of activities/customization that are appealing enough to want one. I purchased an early VR headset and haven't touched it in years. There's also the usual privacy concerns with it being under the same umbrella as Facebook and most likely having to use your real name etc.

VR could be implemented and specialized in different ways , big and complex VR for gaming to increase immersion like nervegear for SAO, small and compact VR device like the scouter from DBZ to let you see a digital layer over reality that lets you see digital items and information , same way the Pokemon Go was with seeing monsters in reality trough the phone app, you could write messages on walls or objects placed with the VR device or trough a program from a pc in a location that only certain users can see, either by 2 or more devices in a network being linked or by password so not everyone can see the info. Or a device similar to the previous one that has a camera and you can use it with different programs to scan and identify ,analyze, compare items in real life to information on that item from a data base. But even if we had such technology , i bet there would be someone or some corporation trying to monopolize it or ruin it in some way, greed will always try to find a way to ruin everything useful or fun.

@@phoenixsui What people need to realise is that VR is not a substiture for your desktop gaming. It's a fun gimmicky console that gives you experiences like no other, but one that you'll probably play every now and then only. That is mostly because its still on the infant phase and there aren't massive games with massive communities, also VR can get very tiresome for your eyes, neck and head after long sessions, even nauseous, so they really need to nail all of the locomotion and comfort / fit elements for it to go mainstream. Same with the software, many games are actually learning thourgh trial and error to see what works and what dosn't, and I'm happy to say that some are up to something for sure. Having said that the best games that fit VR right now are either simulation games or arcade style games that were built for VR...obviously you have some honorable mentions. I'm talking beat saber, cook out, job simulator, Demeo, Super Hot, Rumble VR...but also other genres like first person shooters, Sword fighting games, and especially horror/puzzle games are also great in VR, I myself love horror and VR brings it to a WHOLE other level. What really dosn't work and people need to realize this, are MMO's or big games that have either been ported to VR or tried to recreate a genre that is not yet compatible in VR like No Man's sky...these games are a chore to play in VR, mostly because of the long hours required per session, but in case of MMO's it's also because of the number of inputs.

I love VR but the issue is the lack of support from big game companies. We had half life Alyx and playing that got my hopes up for the future but since then not much has happened. Just mainly your usual demo type low budget games that flood the VR market. I don't think it will take off until the big titles embrace it and I don't think that will happen until its mainstream the money is in it for them. If Mark is serious about the metaverse his money would be better spent paying for those huge titles as that's the only way it will become mainstream and people will start buying a headset instead of or on top of their usual gaming systems. Once it becomes mainstream and everyone has a headset and it becomes profitible for content creators then the Metaverse becomes viable.

They will use the facial tracking like Captchas to learn what mood people are in so they can detect when you’re at peak marketability and then blast a tonne of ads in to your eyeball. Depending on your mood they will generate a personalised ad. Feeling down at 6pm? Let’s show you funny cats eating KFC. Single and lonely at 10pm? Here’s an interactive dating ad where you can choose between a gf experience with for favourite celebrity. Said celebrity gets a 15% cut of revenue generated from their ads.

AR would be way more fun to move around in. Imagine going to your local park and everyone is playing call of duty with AR glasses on and a laser tag gun.

It all started innocently though, "girl wearing a red coat on a sunflower field with mountains in the background", developing to "hot anime blonde girl with big boobs popping out of her microbikini" 🤣

When we’ll be able to command a character by thought, and not need to actually move around, that’s when it’s going to become fucking huge, no doubt about it. Imagine just having to think of moving and the avatar would move, we’d need to train our brains of course, but soon enough we’d be moving artificial limbs inside the meta verse and doing all kind of crazy shit 🎉🎉🎉

Ready Player One, the book is very different from the movie. It gives a very realistic view on how VR may look in the future, with it being used not only for games, but education, business, and everything else you can do in real life. It also includes a very dystopian view on the world itself outside, which will hopefully never come to pass.

I wish for people to understand that VR has nothing to do with metaverse. we already are tethered to a metaverse with social media platforms we use. What do you think about digital colonization? The dystopia is ALREADY HERE. And you people are getting bent out of shape over goggles and cartoons.

I'm an XR designer(graduating next month), so I will work with VR and AR. Right now I'm doing an internship and making VR simulations for fire drills, and the company I'm at also does other educational VR simulations for educating nurses in how to handle crisis situations. VR is defenitely a thing when it comes to education and is already becoming more popular for these things. But it might take a while before it becomes more mainstream. Not even I use my VR headset outside of work :/ I do LOVE prototyping and creating things in VR though, but that's about it. Mostly it's just that the VR games are not as addicting or fun as the pc or console ones for me, it's not even about the graphics. I don't like that I have to move around so much in many of them, and even then....that's the "gimmick", and the game themselfs are kinda meh (obviously not ALL games, but A LOT of them). We need higher quality games, where they actually do good game design and don't use VR as a gimmick.

In my opinion, it's all about the commitment. Let me explain. To play on mobile, you need to take your mobile in your hand. That's it. You can do it anytime, anywhere, and you can stop immediately. Same thing with the switch. It's portable, you can just freeze the game anytime, it's just a slightly bigger device. A solo game on pc/console? Well, you need to be home, in front of your screen. You have to commit to "where" you are, but you can still pause anytime. Multiplayer? Now you can't pause, so you have to commit time too And now VR? You're entirely cut from reality, you have to commit the entirety of your attention to it. And that's the problem. VR can work in a professional setting or in education, where you have to dedicate fully to the experience. But it's a HUGE commitment during for entertainment purpose

You don't have to move around in VR, most games can be played seated, by making you higher in game artificially. Some of these VR mods for flat games still just have you using a regular game controller. I play Alien Isolation in VR exactly how I played it on flat screen, the only difference is I feel like I'm actually inside the game. VR has made pancake gaming "just a gimmick". :D

personally, im not going to wear some big ass headset like that every day for my few hours of free time where i just want to play something, zach borught up a good point with the seated gaming that i think makes sense, i have a friend who does like driving games/sims with VR and that seems cool but i really dont think VR is the future, it'll be popular and cool but i view it in the same lens as 3d for movies, like sure its cool, but we didn't need it to begin with and for the hassle, the base level experiecne is better for me

i like vr/ar and the possibilities. i don't like the multibillion companies hardcode hardware to be only used trough a company portal, like facebook. should be an opensource option if it want to be implemented worldwide. else we get towards an even more corporate society. if they force people to use it through their platforms, it not going to take off.....ever!

for ready player one levels of vr experiences they definitely need to invent an anti nausea drug coz i get in vr already sick af from simply walking straight and looking left and right. now imagine doing all sorts of crazy movement stuff within the vr world, i think i'd get such a nausea that it would stick with me for the rest of my life.

Being able to replace monitors, putting a virtual tv up on any wall in your place and put in virtual lighting in your home could be cool. Walking around with a browser up would be like walking around with your phone. I think AR is what will be more common and what they should start marketing more
