Just wait until AI/automation displaces a majority of the global workforce over the next ten years, the economy crashes, and the UN/WEF/IMF implement a new digital currency that isn't enough to cover your basic needs. Biblical prophecy about not being able to buy, or sell anything unless you worship the coming global system of perfected authoritarian evil is pretty spot on, tbh. The majority of this is going to be possible because we're integrating superfluous smart technology into our lives without even thinking twice about it. Every week there's a new scandal exposing how Orwellian it's going to get. Just this last week, they found that Roomba's were scanning peoples' homes, and taking/storing private pictures. ALL modern smart technology is made for this.

its to easy to have, it does not matter what anyone wants if you know how to program and learn some ML you can make your own from scratch at home provided you still have access to the current iteration of the public internet. You can run the tech on video that's already recorded so you can even have the software run latter off site, making it harder to detect that you actually used it. Its like if humans learned how to make guns from dirt, and wanting nobody to be able to use a gun. Tech does not go back in the box ;.;

yah but twitter and facebook use this excuse verbatim, "we don't like or agree with X, X is legal and you can say it in public or in court but not here so... your banned goodbye...." like that's less of a reason then your company is suing us imo... and if you "opt out" of face recognition (which they would need to run face recognition to see its you to know they cant use it on you, they could just immediately bar you from entry, which is the same situation.) Given the way the technology works, it would probably be more like a sign that says "BEYOND THIS POINT FACE RECONGINTION IS USED, PROCEDING PAST THIS POINT GIVES CONCENT" and word into the ticket contract when you purchase that face recognition is used and by purchasing and using a ticket you give consent to have the technology used on you. trying to opt out of face recognition is like trying to opt out of public CCTV footage, or even CCTV from the gas station, imagine telling the gas station to delete the footage because you don't consent to being filmed because you could be identified... Add the fact that any competent programmer who teaches themselves ML can make themselves a rudimentary Face detection algorithm and implement it onto any video or photo stream they have access to, (public CCTV, facebook, twitter, hacked CCTV or video or photo feeds, private CCTV, and so on). and controling or preventing its use is impossible. Same goes with creating AI. A more extreme example we will probably have to deal with: We can make it illegal to use AI, but anybody who uses it anyway or any country that does not outlaw it will have a extreme advantage in almost every sector, and can just out compete you out of existence, meaning you will be forced to turn to violance, but AI will probably be better at that then us...

It is illegal. They can refuse service UNLESS the company is discriminating against a particular class under federal, state, or local law. And this is discrimination against a legal entity, which isnt allowed. For example Colorado law CRS 24-34-601 prohibits discrimination in Places of Public Accommodation. A place of public accommodation means any place of business engaged in sales to the public, and any place offering services, facilities, privileges, advantages, or accommodations to the public, or any public building or public facility of any kind.

Being denied access to a concert hall on the grounds of being associated with another corporate body is kinda ridiculous, yet I can see how there would be a conflict of interest for more extreme cases. Like a person suing a waterpark over a dangerous slide that they seek to ride later that day. this is a symptom of a bigger issue which is customer data being sold by big tech companies. a simple solution would be to force the companies to pay back customers a percent of all the profits they've made using their data. in cases where the data is being used from just public profiles and such, that should be protected as well since it violates privacy laws that have already been established. in a public space you don't really have privacy, i get that and agree, but the internet isn't treated the same as a public space and so privacy laws should apply. accessing batches of meta data should not be legal just because it's easy to access it through publicly available profiles/images because these images and profiles aren't sitting outside in the middle of the street, they still reside within the structure of a private company (facebook/google etc.). so even though to us casual internet users it looks like it's just out there and publicly available because the person doesn't have privacy settings turned on, that shouldn't allow people to violate someone's privacy, this is why doxxing is illegal, even if you have a public facebook profile you still have the expectation of privacy as a non-public figure.

I can see how this could be useful in some fields but terrible for public use overall. I imagine that in a medical ER it'd be handy if someone didn't have id and were in a critical state having access to their medical file via face recognition could be life saving. Also useful in banks (put security on alert for certain level of criminal but not to act), police stations or patrols (to assess threat/identify), and elementary schools for predators. Large problems occur though based on the accuracy of this and therefore should only be used as an assistance and not the sole primary acting source. I believe private companies shouldn't have control of its use or access to it whatsoever. Either way I'm sure this will be abused and have little faith in most people having any form of control or access to this.

I think if they refuse service that's their prerogative. Fine. But I also think that if they don't have any acceptable valid reason to do so, involving the customer getting violent, or being obstructive or obnoxious toward other customers or staff. That they then owe and IMMEDIATE refund. Especially if you are booted out after just entering a venue you paid to enter.

person A goes to a store with a friend. the friend shoplifts. person A gets put on a "shoplifter list" now most mega food chains will not serve person A because of prior infraction. so now this person can no longer shop at any major stores... this could be a really bad thing.

Imo this is similar to someone doxxing your home address. Even though your house is out in the open and some people know that you live in that house does not mean that the info should be open for everyone to use. I just fear that if anyone can know my name from my face, they can know all about my life. My workplace, my routine and my connections can all be inferred from this. No matter what their intention is, the fact that I don't know this info exists for anyone to access is wrong.

***Edit: watched a little further and seen this was already touched on this, but, shoplifters rarely go to jail, or are even reported to the police in many cases.... ESPECIALLY when we're talking about Walmart who's ridiculous policies do more to empower shoplifters rather than discourage them.*** Plenty of bad ways to use this technology, but I think one good use of this could be theft prevention at like department stores, when you're caught on camera stealing, your face and information go into a database and someone will be alerted whenever you enter a store owned by that department store chain. I think the privacy argument in this case would be a moot point since you only enter the database if you have already broken the law.

@@ceel4223 Of course not, but when someone is caught on camera stealing from your store, it doesn't mean you have to let them back in to steal from you again. The options they have is to go shop somewhere else where they haven't been caught stealing..... this is no different than if you get pulled into the back room by store security for shoplifting and are told to not return to that store again.

If you think about it what keeps the government accountable? Nothing, they aren't going to punish themselves. However if Walmart did something wrong the government has a chance to have Walmart accountable. But there's a problem when the government and private entities work close together and they act essentially as one. I.e Twitter

for YEARS third party Verizon stores have face recognition when you walk in. selling this data overseas and for other reasons. Next time you walk into a retailer (Not corporate) look up and smile :] Since this has been a thing since 2012 I wonder how many other stores do this.

People forget that your full name, address, and sometimes phone number, are all available on various websites. Pay a small amount of money and you can get the last few addresses that they've lived at as well. Yet if I were to sit here and post those details of the people commenting here then they'd call it "doxxing" and pitch a fit. No amount of me saying "it's publicly available information" would calm them, despite that being true.

I can easily see this setting the precedent for multiple companies to ban 1 person or a group of people from all stores belonging to them. Imagine not being able to buy food because you're blacklisted by facial recognition software. And you can't order online either, because they've cross-referenced all of your personal information and blocked you there, too. We're creeping toward that kind of world, for sure.

Well, maybe because She's a lawyer for some bigger firm, Her data is somewhere on their (firm's) webpage so the organisers could just looked Her up (like a google search)? Being a lawyer and representing a firm is more of a public station than some anonymous office worker. That's how They could've gotten that info. If it's out there it's like a private knowledge. Now, the question is, should They ba able to use information like that. In the context They're using it it actually makes sense. However in more general context I'd say companies shouldn't be able to use data that's irrelevant in current context. We could solve it from the OTHER side of things tho. If this situation is a potential for conflict of interest then have a regulation that would *prohibit* Her from using ANY information, that would be obtained by that visit to the venue, in the court case. Basically, the judge, jury and all the participants would have to disregard the information
