I remember people being so damn mean. Like, i don´t watch Dream, i don´t really care about it. But people were so damn mean about his appearence. He looks like a normal guy.

From a career standpoint, it was a mistake. As a life standpoint, it's not. You could argue the massive amount of popularity was worse for his mental health than people calling him ugly and then becoming less popular is. What i don't understand though was him hyping the face reveal to other creators to make it seem his appearance was indeed really good when he's more on the average side. It just backfired imho. Sunny did make a good point though about now you can attack him as a person much more easily as he doesn't hide behind a "mask", hence more leeway for drama to come. Drama also comes with doing collabs with others, just more risk. But hey, he can chill without people invading his personal space as much, hang out with his friends and enjoy himself.

You gotta admire SunnyV2's business model: Say whatever, feed parassociality, cherry pick a few examples that substantiate his point, which more often than not is "this content creator fell off, lower number worse person" and then get millions of views. Rinse and repeat. It’s a great scam, if you disregard the fact that it only serves to feed the most negative parts of the platform.

People like a character they can connect to if they always wore a mask. It’s the same reason Zero was so inspirational in Code Geass since the main character was mysterious. Same with master chief having no real face so that people loved they could bond with the character possibly being any race or person.

This is usually the case with most face reveals. All the intrigue disappears.

I definitely don’t blame Dream in the slightest for wanting to reveal his face. Only downside is it’s an extremely calculated risk to take especially with a fandom like his from a platform and professional standpoint. If you don’t fit the persona or appearance people come up with for you then theres the potential of losing some if not all of your following because of the loss of investment they had into you and your character. It also didn’t help that there were an insane amount of promotion from other KZfaqrs and content creators trying to push Dream’s face reveal and turned him and the whole situation into a meme. That being said if Dream is ultimately happy and this decision has helped him in whichever way he was aiming for then all power to him and hope the best for him.

The reason I like watching Asmons reactions is because I get the thought process of someone older that also uses the internet all the time. the only thing i dont like about face reveals is that after them usually the creator just stays face revealed the whole time. When the mask/avatar was maybe the most recognizable thing that made the channel stand out. The mask WAS the face of the show. Same if some voice editing that made it really distinct and immediately recognizable got removed.

Moonmoon had a pretty successful face reveal but for most it does seem to kill a huge part of their brand - but I guess that’s on the creator for making their anonymity so prominent in the first place. There are loads of creators that we have no idea what they look like and don’t even think about it since it’s not mentioned.

The brand is tied to the face now for all of us that only found out about Dream because of how hyped up his face reveal got. I think that's the point he was trying to make about the branding being different now.

Having a secret identity must be so weird for personal relationships. Figuring out who to tell is so weird. Are you just open to everyone Irl or do you not tell your girlfriend before dating several months. I think the best solution is to do a face reveal early but continue to appear with a mask in content/ interviews if you want to avoid getting recognised by randoms.

the real reason why it isn't the worst mistake in youtube is because Zeb89 exists for context he was super famous in italy, meaning that if you were italian you knew about him 99%, he had a lot of followers and influence and was super funny, then deciding to move to only playing a game called dead by daylight carved his downfall, at first it didn't seem so much so as the community loved the game and him, but then the game started getting worse and worse with each update and he got more toxic every stream with his viewers and friends, started cutting friends out of his life and banning like every single person in his community, then he decided with the small italian community he had left to officially change the language to english and would ban anybody that would type in italian for no reason, even friendly comments. Now he has a small english community that's getting smaller and smaller, it's very sad that such a great image got ruined, he was never a really kind person tho.

Guy has never shown his face publicly, has never played a show not as Buckethead, even his closest friends refer to him at Buckethead, he records in the studio as Buckethead, and the only pictures there are of Buckethead without his Bucket are the ones he himself has released, and he's the greatest guitarist of all time.

I'm not even a fan of dream but I feel kinda bad for him. I think no matter how he looked it couldn't match everyone's expectation. It's like reading a book you love and imagining the story. When you see the movie 9 times out of 10 the movie isn't as good. Because people personalized the story in their own way. Everyone's into different things. Even if he looked like the most subjectively good looking guy ever, some people still wouldn't be happy because he's not their version of good looking. I watch a chunk of faceless creators, in fact there's alot more than people might think. I never understood this hype around face reveals. Just let them make content and not sexualize them? These stans are absolutely rabid and I never considered them fans, the haters are only gonna make it worse cause that's what they always do except now they can use your actual face and body. I've never watched Dream but I could see his rabid fanbase from miles away. I honestly felt bad for him when all this dumb face reveal crap happened. The only difference between Dreams and most others is that Dream was massively watched by fans, stans, haters and even people like me who never watched his content had to hear about him ALL THE TIME. Other people have hyped up their face reveals just the same so I will never agree with that point. Some do and some don't. While I agree I don't think you should hype it up since so much drama comes out for each one, that doesn't mean it hasn't worked before. Some of them get more traction immediately afterwards. I don't think he should be exempt from that when others can do it too and have done it. Also the avatars are kinda like branding logos. They draw people in and they're art centered so artists are gonna flock to these channels more than most to draw fanart of their character. It changes the dynamic once you open up your real face in there. I've never had an issue with these but this is just common in the online space where people get far too attached to people they've never met online. Personally I like faceless content creators just as much as faceforward creators. The amount of hate you get online can have the potential to spread to your family and friends. I'd hate for people to see their face, find their information way easier then, and begin harassing them AND their family. All because you like their content too much or your hate them too much, they're both absolutely insane sides. So faceless content creators are just doing their best to not involve their families just as much as themselves. I can imagine the same thing happening to H20 Delerious as it did to Dream.

Branding works that way for a reason. People need to check out the book Primal Branding if they don't get why he has no buisness changing his Logo. But it is also why the dream mask was iconic. They basically lost one of the symbols of the brand.

Having an avatar to represent yourself is nothing new online. I have seen plenty of creator's faces but don't think of them as that. The avatar is what we chose to brand ourselves as. A representation of what we want to put as ourselves on the internet. While you naturally like your own face it is genetically random if its considered handsome, and a choice if you consider that a part of your core being.

His fame vs. hiding his face didn't make any logistical sense if he wanted to get bigger...... on paper. On paper it made sense. But he branded himself kind of like CORPSE. Then took it really far. He didn't even have to make a video. Just tweet a picture like "This is my face for those that care ." That way, his KZfaq is still the brand he had while he can do irl stuff and people can't get all "Oh my god that's what he looks like!?" Because his picture has been around on Twitter and people would have still made videos about it. My only guess is he knew it'd pull numbers. Which isn't bad at all, it did pull massive numbers but all I hear about Dream now is face reveal stuff even after all this time. I'm sure if it was just picture posted, I'd hear more about his content if his name came up, not his face reveal video. But that's just me. It was a genius move in the moment, he made a LOT of money at that time thanks to it so maybe that was the plan all along.

i dont think people feel comfortable enough to acknowledge that a large part of this issue is underaged kids being allowed to openly express sexual desires online without parental guidance or protection from groomers/predators. a large portion of his fanbase shipped him with other men even though he is not a homosexual and there is a massive problem in the online art communities of underaged kids (mostly girls) claiming their idols are LGBT or autistic (to make them seem more unique) and then drawing these people in really disgusting and sometimes fully X rated drawings. the fan fics are bad too. so when this person actually reveals themselves to be anything less than their eboy anime fetish, they lose their minds. There is also a concerningly large group of young girls (social contagion is real and it affects young girls the most) that claim they have undiagnosed dissociative identify disorder and that Dream was one of the "alters" in their "system". When he revealed himself, these girls just immediately said "oh hes not apart of my system anymore hes too ugly and creepy" as if that's how that extremely rare and extremely serious disorder works... I could go on and on about these types of communities and their fans, but most people in these comments barely even understand how deep and creepy it really gets.
