ASOIAF Battle Report 18 - Bolton (Roose) vs. Stark (Rodrik)

For this A Song of Ice & Fire battle report, we're featuring the new Bolton mini-faction on the channel for the first time. Roose Bolton is facing off against a Stark list led by Rodrik Cassel. We will be playing the A Dance with Dragons game mode. This battle was filmed at The Goldmine in Richmond, Texas. Many thanks to Goldmine for hosting, and to my opponent Geoff for playing a game on the channel!

Excellent batrep. Yours are the best for ASOIAF on YT. I appreciate the format. I like that’s it’s not too cinematic / story driven and it’s very gameplay focused. The 2D round recaps are awesome. Keep these coming please!

Thanks for the support and kind words! I’m very glad you’re enjoying the format. I hope to keep tweaking the videos here and there to make them better, but I’m satisfied overall with the structure of them. I love this game and have no plans to stop producing a ASOIAF content anytime soon!

Fun battle report to watch! Glad to see a win for House Bolton. Got into ASOIAF miniatures for thr House Bolton release so very fun to watch! Also trying to learn a bit, lost my first practice game 😅. Cant wait to see more!

Welcome to ASOIAF! I’m happy to hear you enjoyed the game, and hope you’ll stay tuned for future videos. Don’t get too discouraged by early losses. It takes a little while to learn the ins-and-outs of the game. Boltons also have a bit of an uphill climb anyway, with their limited army options.

Good job, as always. Sent this over to one of my newer players who just picked up Boltons. This is actually the Roose list I suggested to him. I think it's a solid build, as far as Boltons go. They really do need some help though (no neutrals is still baffling to me).

Thanks, I’m glad you enjoyed the video! I like this list, but I think the SS attachment with the BBG is a case of putting a high skill-cap ability into a high skill-cap unit. So if you don’t use that unit properly, you just lose so much value. Putting Ben Bones in the BBG requires less babysitting. But I agree the Boltons definitely need some neutrals access, even if it’s a limited selection of neutral units. They’ll get some help eventually, but it may not be for a couple of seasonal patches.

I agree that SS in BBGs is a unit that brokers no errors in using it. However, it's about the only effective tool, coupled with Seeing Their Flaws, that Boltons currently have to deal with GCS (which are everywhere).

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I seem to recall CMON weighing in on the question of whether effects that shut off abilities will cancel GSC’s Adaptive Style. I believe they said that, if the ability had not yet been used that round, it would prevent it from being used for that turn. But if the ability had already been popped that round, the effect of Adaptive Style could not be turned off. This isn’t a showstopper though of course, and as long as the BBG +SS + Seeing Their Flaws can get the jump on the GSC, they can do some serious damage.

@imperialminis857 correct. If it has already been used, it sticks. So you have to get the jump on the unit before they've activated their defensive style. A bit tricky, but at least BBGs have good mobility.

Great Video! Really enjoyed seeing Boltons in action and I love the "You can´t hit me gimmick" List. I definitely will try a variant of this list with Bowmen instead of greataxes and tully swords instead of karstark spears.

Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed the video! The Stark list is definitely built on a gimmick, but that gimmick is brutal when it's able to force the opponent to deal with it. Those are some solid substitution options you suggest.

Thanks for the support! I think Boltons are a very fun faction but are a bit too limited to really compete at a high level with the main factions. I don’t think mini-factions are designed to be more than fun side-factions though. That said, Boltons would benefit greatly from at least some limited access to other Neutral units and NCUs. We’ll see what the future holds for the factions. It’s always possible that they get buffed or tweaked in future seasonal patches. Just found u today by accident I really like your report. How u talk about the game on the end with this Grafiks is really a awesome thing Just one question. When u killed the spearmen with the girls u use Tobake on the sword. Why not Ramsey? U would heal 4 wounds Keep going on this good job ❤

I’m glad you found the channel and that you enjoy the battle report format we use! If I remember correctly, I may have used Tybald instead of Ramsay so that I could use one of Tybald’s orders to attempt to retake the swords later with another NCU after using Tybald’s ability. If Tybald’s order tokens were already used up by the time of the attack you mention, then I probably should have just used Ramsay for the heal.

Awesome report, still on the fence on whether to buy this game, but these well-produced Batt Reps really does make me lean towards getting my own set already (am thinking of playing Boltons as well).

I hope you give it a try! Before buying into the game, perhaps you can find someone at your local store who can play a demo game with you. It’s a relatively affordable game to get into, and the fact that the minis all come preassembled makes it very easy to get the game on the table quickly. Good luck!

@@imperialminis857 True that, unfortunately it's not as popular in my local gaming stores, but here's hoping things change around. CMON really does seem dedicated in further developing the game with these new factions and units. And as a W40k player, lemme tell you the price difference is such a breath of fresh air. The amount of minis (which have pretty great sculpts) you get with each set purchase pretty much seals the deal for me 😂

@jamesrodriguez3667 All it takes is finding one other local person to give it a try and soon you could have a community. 😉 I’ve never played 40k, but the pricing, fast release frequency, and general GW business strategy have deterred me from getting into the WH games. CMON is committed to this game, and is launching a Kickstarter this year for a skirmish-sized character-focused ASOIAF game called Tactics. The minis from that game can apparently be used in this game as well! Lots of good stuff on the horizon.

@@imperialminis857 All valid sentiments regarding WH Games. Oh wow, didn't know they're planning a skirmish type game. Will check this out as well, excited for the future of this miniatures game, they have a ton of lore and designs to still go through! Welp, already on my 3rd Batt Rep from your channel, and I have to echo the other comments that this is the best ASOIF Batt Rep channel out there currently. @jamesrodriguez3667 Thanks for the support! I’m excited for the future of this game and for the potential of the forthcoming ASOIAF: Tactics game. I’m looking forward to the next game balance patch that will hopefully drop in the next couple of months. Balance patches always shake up the game and revitalize the competitive meta. CMON has lately been releasing game updates (patches) every six months or so.

Im not sure i understand, when the blackguards charged the mummers in their flank, you considered the weirwood to be rough and hindering?

I believe the Blackguard were influenced by Howland Reed, who makes the unit he’s influencing consider all terrain to have the Rough and Hindering keywords. He can be brutal!

At 1:13:50 the stark player passes with an NCU even though there are places available on the tactics board..why?

He had two NCUs remaining but there was only one Tactics Board position left. NCUs can only activate if there are unclaimed zones on the tactics board. This means that if he claimed that last zone while he still had another NCU to activate, that other NCU could not activate this round, losing him an activation. He passed to maintain his activation count and not lose tempo in the round.

This was a weird ass Stark list. I thought about the minus hit thing a bunch of times but it just doesn't synergize well in Stark. There are better options.
