Why do police use batons? Are extendable batons effective? Do collapsible batons work?

I have used mine twice for self defense in 8.5 years of security and corrections, both times I never had to use it, but it got their attention that I wasn't screwing around.

Back scratcher, and very useful for when I park slightly too far away from the automatic car wash in my patrol car and can’t quite reach the button to select the wash I want

Same. I've carried my Triton for six years and only ever used it for scratching my back and pushing water out of our quayside marquees.

As a security guard certified to carry expandable batons (I'm not American & you must be certified to carry batons in my country) as well as someone with a background in Filipino Martial Arts (FMA)/Kali/Arnis/Escrima I think the main reason why the batons are almost useless in a "combative" situation is because of how police & security are taught to use them. The methods taught are designed for the old solid batons such as the wooden one you showed in the video or even an old truncheon where the weight is at the striking end and not in the handle like it is with modern expandable batons. Expandable batons being hollow & tapering down to the striking end are extremely light weight at the point of impact so you require speed, accuracy and multiple impacts in quick succession like is seen/taught in Kali and not a single hard strike like we are taught to do with the baton. Batons are not the issue, they are extremely effective when combined with Kali....the problem is the techniques taught. You wouldn't teach someone to drive an automatic car and then give them a manual truck license but that's effectively what is happening with expandable batons....they are teaching us to use one thing but giving us something with completely different characteristics without teaching us how to recognize weapon characteristics and how to adapt to the weapon. This is also why I think Kali is a better system to teach in relation to batons because we don't learn from the point of view of "This is this X weapon and it's used like this" of "This is Y weapon and it's used like this", we learn that the angles of attack remain the same regardless of the weapon and we allow the weapon to tell us how to us it, i.e.: - Anything with an edge will cut/lacerate - Any flat or round surface (such as a baton, 2x4 or a wall) uses impact - Anything with a point will stab We also allow the weight of the weapon and the center of gravity/balance point to tell us how it wants to move, i.e.: - Light weight like a baton is good for speed - Heavy is good for power strikes - Higher center of gravity/balance point is good for hacking - Lower center of gravity/balance point is good for slashing The problem is the techniques not the weapon.

You absolutely nailed it! Though, I wouldn't say they teach the wrong techniques out of ignorance. We are taught the wrong techniques out of fear of liability. The proper, most effective batons are "scary and barbaric." But, those light weight pieces of crap just seem friendlier. Nevermind the fact that there are videos of cops the globe over needing to smack the hell out of people with those batons lile its a Saturday morning cartoon. Indeed, the Kali techniques focus on speed, accuracy, and repitition. All three things have terrible public optics in law enforcement... just like hitting someone one time with a real baton amd watching them crumple to the floor has bad optics. By switching to these batons, it completely discourages any officer from using that force option (politically and optically this is a good thing). Instead, officers are left with hand-to-hand techniques, and Taser (another ineffective piece of multi-million dollar garbage). Hell, look back on the lies surrounding "Hands-up, Don't Shoot." The manufacturers came in droves with new less lethals designed to practically replqce firearms. My favorite was one that looked like a clown nose being launched out of your pistol. A real gem. Pretty soon all law enforcement and security will be issued "Safe Space" blankets as an intermediate device. If things escalate, officers can then transition to their pillows for a rough and tumble pillow fight. At least the political and public optics are bearable.

There’s something to be said for the old flat sap! Where used properly and not against the head! Good for close quarters and gaining compliance with “subtlety”! I’ve seen your previous video and agree about misuse, but some use them properly (where allowed)

"Wrestling is great until you try to wrestle more than one guy" is very true. Unless you can do some crazy ninja stuff and invert everyone's joints in as many seconds as there are people trying to get you, you're probably just going to have one guy in a hold while the other kicks you in the face.

I have a question Sir. When those in a Special Operations Team rescue a hostage from a building, when they get him out of the building alive, do they hand the hostage over to the normal cops or do they themselves go all the way to the station with him? If they hand him over, what rank does the police officer who takes charge of the hostage have? I'm trying to write a short-story about cops, therefore I would want to get the details right.

Sir, I am into armed security and executive Protection. In my opinion using a very minimalistic gear vest lvl3a, duty gun 3 magazines flash light. I personally believe that carrying handcuffs or baton should not be helpful just because I don’t work in a law enforcement capacity. I believe that if it gets to use a baton I just go hand to hand or just use my firearm. What are your thoughts? Maybe I may might need to get idk 🤷🏻‍♂️

Baton is useless if you don't know how to use it. The striking technique has to be in perfect shape, which unfortunately is not the case for the majority of police officers.
