Well written, when someone gains power it turns all their traits up to 150%. The good becomes even greater, and the bad becomes straight up evil. Lee was slightly condescending already, but when he became a Templar he thought himself above everyone else.

Not that I question your conclusion, but those two proof points are sort of weak and misleading. He kicked down the door to prove himself to Haytham and the act itself is not even close to 'dark'. And the wolves he shot didn't belong to Ziio, they were about to sneak up on and attack her. He simply did the logical thing and he was NOT explicitly ordered to do nothing in that situation, Haytham himself had not seen the wolves earlier.

1 charles lee was never innocent. There was a reason burch put charles on the list. Charles acted the way he did because and only when haytham was around.there are multiple indications that charles wasnt as bubbly as it may seem. When they were looking for the last templar to recruit haytham politly knocked on the door and when no one answered he was about to leave but it was charles by haythams suprise that just kicked the door in. Then the famouse young connor scene just before the attack. 2nd charles was simply following orders from his other job. It had nothing to do with the templars. Thats why haytham was so suprised

Charles hid his true intentions through the whole game. He praised the ground which Haytham walked upon because Haytham was the Grand Master but when he was not around he acted as if he was the leader and showed his true side. You can see in the beginning like mentioned Charles did things that suprised Haytham but he also wanted to know more of Haytham (I believe Charles did want to replace Haytham at some point). When you play as Connor in the game you will see all the Templars changed appearance and uniforms except Haytham. They all dressed up fancy and rich to show power while Haytham was the only one not doing it. It shows us that Charles manipulated the rest of the Order while Haytham was gone (finding his sister and working with Shay during Rogue events). So it is not that the Templars was bad, it was Charles messing everything up and I think somewhere in Rogue Shay had a distrust towards certain Templars as he only wanted to work with some. Shay and Monroe was very good friends, Shay preferred to work with Gist and Jack Weeks which eventually leaded to Haytham working with Shay (even though Shay did not chose him they still worked together and got along). Charles Lee, Benjamin Church, Thomas Hickey, John Pitcairn and even William Johnson did not work with Shay despite them being in Rogue. It might be that Haytham had other duties for them still Shay chose certain people to work with in the order that was not power hungry or selfish. So Haytham was a good person it was Charles that messed up everything but I suspect in Rogue Shay already knew the motives of some Templars as he only worked with some he wanted to and you can read up each he worked with. All had the motives of making the world a better place and to help the innocent, Monroe was a very big icon in this sense.

I may be 3 years late but I did answer this question in another post will do so again. Charles Lee was not a good person and there was certain red flags in the beginning of game showing his behavior, some which shocked Haytham. He hid his true intentions and only acted infront of Haytham as he thought the Grand Master wanted to. He literally praised the ground on which Haytham stood to get on his good side but later in game when Haytham is not present he acts as if he is the person making the decisions. You can see also Charles Lee and the rest changed to fancy outfits later in game while Haytham never did which showed the Grand Master sticked to his beliefs. During the events of Rogue when you play as Shay certain elements of the Order is shown to Shay and it is possible Shay knew some Templars in the Order was selfish and corrupt. You will see Shay chose only certain people he could trust that genuinely wanted to help the innocent. Charles Lee and all the members of AC 3 was in Rogue they all appeared around the table in Rogue when Shay was made Templar and some did appear in certain missions but Shay never asked their help or worked with them. Rogue explained alot to me of why certain things was like that in AC 3. Charles was a very sneaky manipulative person that blinded Haytham and manipulated him. Haytham should of killed Charles in the game to stop him from corrupting the Order and should of placed Shay as second in command but I believe Shay already had no interest in their Order that time. He probably knew the truth already and you will see at the end of Rogue, Shay already knew of Connor movement in America which indicated he already knew all what was happening in AC3

Connor knows Charles sealed his own fate by sparing a beast such as himself.

My thoughts is that Washington burning down the village was a last-minute writing change. The fact that the Templars were literally right next to the village on the same day Washington allegedly burned the place is very suspect, as is the fact that Washington retired from the British Army in 1758 and the burning happened in 1760.

Additionally, Lee, Hickey, and Church would not become affiliated with Washington in any way directly until the Revolution (according to recorded history), where Lee was one of the Continental Army's top generals, Hickey was part of the "Life Guard" whose job was to protect Washington, and Church was a spy planted by General Thomas Gage into the Sons of Liberty. Also, the dialogue in the scene is heavily implicit to be related to the Grand Temple and that crystal ball Piece of Eden ("We have 'questions' for your elders," "The sooner we have what we seek..."). That and their direct proximity to the village is indicative that they were operating on Templar business. Whether or not Haytham knew/gave his consent to the operation is uncertain, but due to Lee's more openly aggressive nature here as compared to earlier its implied that he may have been operating independently. Personally, the reveal that somehow Washington was responsible felt like a last-minute twist for no exact purpose; Washington's role in the game is rather small on the whole even with this twist, which has no bearing on Connor's affiliation with the Patriots even though it really should.

technically not all assassins. The assassins who think for themselves for example, Shay. The only reason why assassins look evil in the core is because of the creed. The majority of the assassins see the creed as holy and perfect. Yet even when corruption or poor leadership strikes them, most assassins still think the creed is holy. This is what drove Shay towards the templars. That's why I liked ezio, altair, arno and shay a lot. They can think for themselves (Although Arno is arguable here). If you think about it, the only reason why templars look bad is because they get too drunk or obsessed with wealth power etc. while the assassins is blind to the truth. If the assassins can think for themselves, there'll be no creed. Instead, there will be individual assassins whose purpose actually is in the right. If the templars loses tendency to get drunk in power wealth etc., they can lead mankind to a bright future. Both factions can actually. That's another reason why I liked unity. Both factions actually wanting to end hostilities with one another but as usual, people in their ranks stopped this. The templars as politicians and the assassins as those who kill people who aims to destroy humanity. The only templars you see evil for example cesare, charles, rodrigo, germain etc. are corrupted and drunk in power. Another reason why I liked haytham. He aimed for a bright and orderly future while dispersing those who are against this ideology. (But him thinking charles lee can lead a bright future is quite questionable)

I've actually done a lot of thinking about the philosophies of both sides and, to me, I can see Lee's change as being a product of him accepting that he is a just a tiny part of a greater whole. The Order seems to consistently operate on the principle of "the ends justify the means" and the actions and even the life of any single individual mean essentially nothing. So, in that environment, a person who has an inclination toward cruelty wouldn't really have any reason to not be cruel. The knowledge that one is doing the right thing so long as one serves the "greater good" (no matter how maliciously they do it) is essentially how most of real history's evils have come to take place.

I believe that the reason we see him as cruel is because we are seeing him from Connor's point of view, Connor doesn't like him and believes he burned his village while to haytham Lee is an asset and the future of the order hence from haytham's pov he would be a better person, that paired with the fact that haytham is his superior hence he wouldn't show such mannerisms around him

That's what went wrong with Bayek as well, if they just asked reasonably on how to open the vault with the Apple of Eden instead of beating and assaulting him for no reason, then there would be no Templar Assassin war in the first place.
