How to assemble a Mikuni TM36 Flat Slide carburetor? In this video I’ll lead you through it step by step, after having cleaned all parts. This popular carburetor is often used as an aftermarket Yamaha XT500 upgrade.
The Mikuni TM36 carburetor is very comparable to the Mikuni HS40, so you can follow the same steps. It is also similar to the Mikuni HSR series.

Great video!! I had to order a rebuild kit after mine started pouring fuel heavy from both overflow holes. I have tried everything I can think of cleaning and adjusting and making sure everything looks okay. It doesn’t leak when I take it off and hook it up to the gas tank to see if the float will stick or anything. I’ll put it on my Honda xr400r and after a day or so it starts pouring again. We will see after I install the new parts. Any advice on what else it could be?

hi do you know how many turns you should give to the fuel screw? i just bought a set of mikuni rs 36 for my bike and mikuni instruction says that the adjustment should be from 1/8 and 1/2 turn out max, but sound very strange to me and the bike runs very lean at 1/2 turn out, can i go further to 1 1/2 turn out? tks

Awesome video mate! Just installed the same carb on my Yamaha sr400. Couple of quick questions.. I’m getting quite a load tapping sound from the slide, I think.. I have read it’s normal for the slide to make a bit of noise at idle from vibration but it seem a bit loud to me. Goes away as soon as I touch the throttle or adjust the idle screw up a touch. Does this happen on your carb? Also that vacuum cap, is that come from the factory or did you have to block it off. Mine came with a hose attached but not blocked. Cheers for your help mate. 👍🍻

Hi, the vacuum cap was there from the factory. On my XT500 I don't have a vacuum fuel valve. i Think an SR500 does, so maybe yours has as well? About the tattling noise. Mine doesn't do that. When idle the return spring pulls it back hard enough into the idle adjustment screw to prevent that noise. Not sure what is causing it. Maybe the spring is not right enough?

What are the advantages of this type of carb against conventional PWK? I've always want to try a TM.

Because a flatslide carb is less long than a carb with a round slide the airflow is less restricted. Meaning a slightly higher performance. Some other advantages are that with the TM series you can adjust almost everything to tune the performance of your engine at your sweetspot with regards to throttle position of revs. Edit: long with regards to the distance the air needs to travel

I'm currently working on my rebuilding my Mikuni HS40. My question is how many turns out should I start with on the pilot fuel screw at the bottom intake side of the carb. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks, Scott

Hi, I think I can't explain it better then in an old Mikuni manual: "The pilot screw is used to control idle mixture. Turn the screw out to richen the idle mixture. Turn it in to lean the mixture. The engine should have a smooth, steady idle with the screw between 1/4 and 3-1/2 turns out from fully bottomed (gently!). If the engine requires more than three turns out, the pilot or pilot air jet may be too lean. If it requires less thatn 1/4 turn, it may be too rich." So I'd start with 2-1/2 turn from closed and start the bike. The slowly turn the pilot screw in and out until the bike runs at the highest idle speed but still smoothly. Then you have the correct setting. And if you are outside of the limits as stated in the text above then you should probably try a different pilot jet.

Great video, can you please tell me how to spot a fake tm36? I bought 1 from ebay for a great price but I'm having mixed feelings because the price was too good 😂

Hi, So sorry for the late reply! I am not sure how you can actually determine if it is an original. Probably the surface finish and quality of the screws? Or maybe the inside and the surface finish of the slide.
