I was always told from a young age that dogs wearing something signifying that they're service dogs (a vest, a special lead, etc.) are working, and that you shouldn't pet them or distract them. I wish more parents would explain this to their kids early on in their lives.

This. And in general, I was strictly forbidden to pet any animal without the owner being here and having permission to do it. '' A dog can be cute but still bite because he doesn't know you '' have been drilled in my head.

Terrific clip. Thank you for sharing this useful information clearly and politely. Some days I am so tired I can be a little abrupt about this basic etiquette around any working animals. Now I can share your clip. 💞🐾

The next tube someone asks me what my dog helps with and they won't accept "because I need him" I will be asking them health questions. My boy is still in training, so even looking at him when he's not looking at me can distract him still. That's one of the many reasons I've taught him the command "ignore"

I've had 2 different incidents with service dogs going up to me; once a diabetic service dog sat on my feet while I was trying to leave work I didn't know what to do so I just stood still till it's owner moved to a different aisle. The other time, I was stocking shelves and an emotional support poodle started head butting me; I remained calm and just did my work (it felt like a foam ball nudging me) but the owner turned around and yelled at me for petting her dog, I just stayed quiet and tried to finish the shelf I was on. Is it normal for service dogs to react this way or where they trying to tell me to get help?

Those dogs sound untrained...it's possible you were just interacting with emotional support animals. Those animals are NOT trained nor have certifications.

ESAs aren’t generally allowed in places like restaurants, grocery stores, etc. It has to be a trained service dog. (At least in the US, I can’t say anything about other countries.) But sometimes the managers get really lax and don’t enforce the rules unfortunately, especially in cities where there is a very strong dog culture. It was really bad the last place I lived. It was physically painful to see a teacup poodle who was clearly just a pet sitting in a cart where you’re supposed to put your food. 🫤

Please can you explain how your assistance dog has been trained - also, how do you advocate for yourself when you need your dog in a situation? I'm also neurodivergent and have informally trained my dog to help me go out in the world and at points have been able to take him to medical appointments, but it is really difficult to be taken seriously by a lot of the places that I need to go.

It shouldn't be seen as mean to not let strangers touch your living creatures. You don't know if the dog is fully healthy and well or maybe had a traumatic past and doesn't like certain things or isn't particularly good with kids! And afterall, if anything happens the owner is responsible. Many are way to careless in my opinion, just looking at the number of people bitten by dogs, so setting boundaries really ensures everyones well being. This also kinda goes for people, and setting boundaries that others don't immediately understand can be seen as selfish. I think it's literally the opposite if done correctly.

Ella, I think of getting a service dog to myself, so I would love if You could tell more in a long video. Like how You made the decision to get one, then how You choose that specific dog, did You train it Yourself or did You get it fully trained, how long do You live together, etc.

How are we to know it’s a support dog? Does it have a special harness or anything

I love that you have chosen to partner with a dog to assist with your needs, bravo! And thank you for all you are doing in the name of autism 🎉. Respectfully, the one piece where you requested that no one ask felt quite uncomfortable for me. How do we know whether or not it's ok to pet a person's dog if we are being told to not ask? I love it when people interact with my furry family, and the socialisation that invites to their world. You are choosing your rules, and that is wonderful, also true is that can make it uncomfortable when you have to enforce your rules by educating people on the spot who don't know. As an influencer you have power. Sending a blanket request to just not ask because of how uncomfortable that might make you feel personally feels very prickly for me. Everyone is different. I love it when people ask me! Maybe have a vest on your dog when you go out that instructs people to "please do not pet me", or something like that.

I think you can safely assume, if the dog is at a supermarket like in Purple Ella’s example, it *should* be a service dog, because non service animals generally aren’t allowed for hygiene reasons (in most countries at least, from what I understand), so you should never try to interact with it. 😊

Constantly monitoring people and a working service animal like an Assistance Dog can be exhausting especially with a young and enthusiastic dog. Eps loves friendly people. She gets way too enthusiastic to greet. It isn't fair to my AD to be constantly recalled from overly friendly people in public. It makes things much harder for both of us. Different dog and hsndler teams have different boundary needs. Having some handlers saying it is ok to play with their jacketed, working dogs often make things much harder for PWD who need different boundaries. I think this clip is great. I wish more people understood how inappropriate it can be to distract service animals or their handlers when in public spaces. 🐾

Some support dogs are permanently working, yes but they are trained to react when needed and they can relax until they know an avent is happening, dogs enjoy their work or they would not be a support animal. A lot of dogs fail the training but the ones who pass are amazing animals (not all support animals are dogs).❤
