What is the default human condition? (the ‘spiritual state’ of every human being) Condemnation?. John’s Gospel and the book of Revelation declare the Human ‘default’ Spiritual Condition with clarity and sobriety. POSITIVELY, anyone who believes in Jesus, The Christ will NOT PERISH. John 3:18 defines the ‘default’ state with precision - “…he who does not believe in condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.” It is nearly impossible to ‘misunderstand’ that declaration of our LORD JESUS in His conversation with Nicodemus. Then in John 5:24-29 another set of declarations are made by our Lord that further inform and clarify the human spiritual condition. 24 “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life. 25 Most assuredly, I say to you, the hour is coming, and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God; and those who hear will live. 26 For as the Father has life in Himself, so He has granted the Son to have life in Himself, 27 and has given Him authority to execute judgment also, because He is the Son of Man. 28 Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear His voice 29 and come forth-those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation. 30 I can of Myself do nothing. Lake of Fire - THUS the Lake of Fire is the permanent and final disposition of Satan/Lucifer, all the fallen angels/demons, the Beast/Antichrist, the False Prophet, and all UNBELIEVERS of ALL OF THE AGES OF HUMAN HISTORY. Many people interpret the word salvation in this verse to refer to eternal salvation from hell. This is improper. Some have interpreted Phil 2:12 to mean that Christians must bring about their own eternal salvation by obeying God. Such an understanding is entirely foreign to the Bible! Others have suggested that the key to understanding this verse is the word out. Working out eternal salvation, they say, is different than working for it. They interpret Paul to mean that we are to put our eternal salvation into practice. This view removes the obvious theological difficulty of the previously mentioned view. However, It does not fit the context. Below is an explanation of the immediate context and Paul’s use of the words salvation and work out. BELIEVERS ARE IN VIEW In our verse Paul calls the readers “my beloved,” an expression he reserves for believers. See also 1:1 where Paul indicates that he is writing, “to the saints in Christ Jesus who are in Philippi.” Believers are already eternally saved and cannot lose that salvation. PAUL IS CALLING BELIEVERS TO ONGOING OBEDIENCE Paul begins this verse with the words “as you have always obeyed.” We expect him to go on to say something like, “keep on obeying.” While he does not use exactly those words, that is implicit in what he does say. Working out one’s salvation is another way of talking about ongoing obedience. The following context bears out this conclusion. FEAR AND TREMBLING? While believers are not to fear hell-Jesus has guaranteed that no will go there (John 3:16-18; 5:24), we are to fear the Lord. This fear reflects both reverence for His awesome grandeur (e.g., Isa 6) and respect for His discipline (e.g., Heb 12:3-11). Believers are thus to exercise ongoing obedience with an attitude of reverential fear. SALVATION FROM WHAT? The word salvation (Gk. soteria) occurs only three times in Philippians. In 1:19 Paul said, “For I know that this will turn out for my salvation through your prayers and the supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ.” Paul wrote Philippians from jail (see Phil 1:12-14). Thus the term salvation in 1:19 might refer to Paul’s deliverance from prison. However, in vv 20-26 Paul hints that while he expected to be released (vv25-26), he might instead glorify Christ by his death (vv20-23). Thus Paul may have used the word salvation metaphorically in v 19 to refer to a victorious triumph over the trials he faced by magnifying Christ through them whether he was released from prison or not. In 1:28 Paul indicates that if the Christians at Philippi demonstrated a lack of fear of their adversaries (i.e., by continuing to boldly proclaim Christ and live for Him), this would be proof to the adversaries of their destruction (Gk. apoleia) and to the Christians at Philippi of their own salvation. Salvation in 1:28, as in 1:19, has two possible meanings. First, it could refer to deliverance from temporal difficulties-the very difficulties God’s adversaries do not escape (they experience “destruction”). Second, it could refer to believers triumphantly glorifying Christ through temporal difficulties, whether they escaped them or not. In both cases temporal, not eternal, deliverance is in view. So when we turn to 2:12 it is reasonable to expect that the word salvation is used by Paul as it has been in the only other two uses in this letter. That is, we expect another reference to temporal (=here and now) deliverance. That is indeed the case. The salvation of 2:12 either refers to deliverance from the difficulties God brings upon the disobedient or to deliverance through the trials that the faithful experience, though not necessarily by means of escaping the trials themselves. WHAT DOES “WORK OUT” MEAN? The word translated work out (katergazomai) means to “achieve, accomplish, bring about, produce, [or] create” (BGD, p. 421). Paul was thus exhorting the Philippian believers to bring about or achieve their own salvation by obedience to God. This makes perfect sense if temporal salvation is in view. Compare 1 Cor 11:30; James 1:21; 2:14; 5:19-20. The translation work out is potentially misleading since one meaning of work out is to exercise something we already have (e.g., “he works out three times a week”). That is not what the Greek word means. It only can legitimately be translated work out in the sense of accomplishing something (as in “he worked out a solution to the budget deficit”). The idea that the word out is the key to understanding this verse is unsupported by the meaning of the Greek word in question or the context. CONCLUSION Phil 2:12 is not dealing with eternal salvation at all. Rather, it is dealing either with temporal salvation from the calamities which come upon the disobedient or with temporal salvation through the trials which faithful believers face. Therefore, get to work and keep on working. Seek to utilize every opportunity to glorify Christ. Remember, it always pays to obey God and it never pays to disobey Him. Shalom

gerarados saving faith means believing in the Lord Jesus Christ for eternal life (cf 1 Tim 1:16). Nothing else is saving faith. Not only is believing for everlasting life enough, it is the only way to have everlasting life. Jesus guarantees everlasting life to all who simply believe in Him for it with no strings attached. DO YOU BELIEVE THIS? The salvation obtained by faith plus works is not soteriological entrance into heaven. Rather it is a salvation of "brethren" (regenerate believers) from the temporal, psychological, spiritual, or possible physical consequences (sin unto death) of a non-working faith resulting in a negative assessment at the Judgement seat of Christ. It's imperative not to confuse the "Judgement Seat of Christ" with the "Great White Throne Judgement, the latter is for non-believers and if you believe the first paragraph Jong you have just become a regenerate BELIEVER, and will surely enter His KIngdom. We have a teaching body within the Church for 2,000 years that helps guide us as we read Scripture and follow Tradition. I hope one day you can see the divisions caused by all of these multitudes of translations. They have divided my own family. It is so sad. I will pray for you. May I suggest a podcast/radio show: Called to Communion. It's hosted by a former Calvinist/Presbyterian Dr. David Anders. They also have a website by the same name. He obtained his doctorate on Martin Luther and John Calvin who both taught what you have written/explained. Those theories were never taught or believed by the Christian Church until 500 years ago.

The One True Faith, under the guidance of the Holy Ghost, does not misunderstand. Men outside the Church, misunderstand because they refuse to submit to the Church founded by Jesus Christ.

The official Bible of the One, True Church is the Latin Vulgate. The Douay Rheims is the english translation. Use those. Notice that most modern translations of the bible omit Matt. 17:21. This is purposefully done. It is not an accident. Jordan Peterson has some good ideas, but he has not studied the science of God. Be careful.

This is why miracles are required for a person to be canonized a saint. Apart from the miracle requirement, there is an extensive investigation of the person’s life, which can take years to complete, to demonstrate they lived a life of exceptional holiness. But that is not enough because, as this video explains, only God has the omniscience to know the person’s heart completely. Thus miracles are required, which are almost always miraculous cures of the sick. These too are investigated thoroughly, and can only be deemed authentic if they meet four criteria; 1. The sick person must be cured spontaneously, meaning no other natural or medical explanation can be found. 2. The cure must be immediate, meaning they did not get better over time but in an instant. 3. It must be complete. So in the case of an inoperable brain tumor, it cant just get smaller or better, it has to vanish entirely. And 4. It must be enduring. They can’t relapse. Nowadays, with the modern imaging technology available, these miracles are astoundingly well documented and impossible to disprove. You literally have MRI, CT, Xray images of incurable pathologies dated and signed, and then repeat images where the disease process has vanished utterly. Panels of doctors, not all Catholic either but deliberately including non-believers, must be unable to find any possible natural explanation. Now if a sick person prays specifically to a deceased person who they believe is likely a saint, or is already declared “servant of God” or beatified, but is not yet declared a saint, asking that deceased person to pray for them to God for a miraculous cure, and the miracle happens, then it is reasonable to believe that the deceased person is indeed in heaven, and was able to hear that prayer and intercede for that person at the very mercy seat of God in heaven, and this is seen also as a kind of sign that God, by performing the miracle, may Himself approve of that person’s canonization as a saint. If you want to hear some really beautiful and mind-blowing stuff, check out the miracles. The modern ones with all the images and proof. They are wonderful. Great for strengthening one’s faith, which i suppose is the main reason God does them :)

The Church is the Body of Christ and has been granted Divine Authority to "bind and lose." Whatever the Church "binds on earth" shall be "bound in heaven." The Holy Spirit guides the canonization process of Saints and infallibly declares that they are in heaven. Your average Joe has no authority to judge the hearts of others.

You can. But considering the fruits of many of the self styled faithfuls, Catholic Church have long concluded that there faith is only in their words/minds not in their heart/souls. Otherwise how dare they cherry pick from scriptures and deductively make an artificial salvation plan rather than inductively arrive at the original salvation plan.

John's use of eternal life involves inaugurated eschatology. i.e. The end times are brought into the present. His use of 'life' IMO has a definite leaning towards knowing God in the now, i.e. having an intimate relationship w God (Jn 17.3). Paul and others on the other hand use eternal life to refer to what is given after Jesus returns to judge. In my reading it is closely associated with resurrection. Consider how Jesus refers to eternal life in Mt 25.46 and Paul in Rom 2.7 and how that differs from John's use of life and eternal life. Unfortunately, John's theology can be used systematically to dodge the implications of Paul, Peters and the author of Hebrews statements with respect to the conditionality of salvation, falling away etc. Even in John's theology, he has Jesus stressing the need to keep abiding in Jesus (Jn 15.2,6,10), so the inaugurated gifting of eternal life (his way of viewing it) is not a guarantor that it will be kept for all time without the possibility of a future condemnation, especially for those who walk away from Jesus of their own accord (not His) through sin and unbelief.

Well said! The virtue of hope pushes us to be precisely hopeful about our eternal salvation. Living here in the Bible Belt, someone will almost surely ask you this before you die. Usually they mean, “Have you given your heart to Jesus to make him your personal Lord and Savior and have you stepped out in faith?” This is a wonderful and even necessary thing to do. It is also an action based on their interpretation of John 3:1-21, but it doesn’t have much to do with the text or context of the passage. The early church, in fact, focused on John 3:5: “Amen, amen, I say to you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and Spirit.” The early church unanimously interpreted this passage as referring to baptism and has continued to do so for 2000 years. Any other interpretation is very recent, in church years. Look at the context: In John 1:33, John the Baptist speaks of baptism in water and Spirit. Look as well at John 7:38-39, or John 9:7, where the man born blind went and washed, and then he could see; or John 13: 8, where Jesus says, “Unless I wash you, you will have no inheritance with me.” (We receive our inheritance as adopted sons and daughters of God when we are justified, or freed, from our sins). You can also play some “Bible trivia”: Count how many times the words water, baptism, baptized or Spirit appear in the first nine chapters of John’s Gospel. Other passages in the Bible uphold this, as well. Third, even if these first two objections were not valid, this view leads to the unbiblical conclusion that no one can ever be sure that he is saved until he dies or is raptured. No one could ever know if he had obeyed enough. Yet the Scriptures are clear that the apostles knew with absolute certainty that they were saved and they wanted their readers to know this as well (Luke 10:20; John 13:10; Rom. 8:31-39; 2 Pet. 1:1; 1 John 2:12-14, 25; 5:13). There is another view as to what Jesus meant by the expression “the will of My Father.” When Jesus spoke of doing the will of the Father to obtain kingdom entrance, He had one act of obedience in mind: believing the gospel. It is God’s will that none should perish but that all should come to a change of mind about the gospel (2 Pet. 3:9). When asked the question, “What shall we do, that we may work the works of God?” Jesus said, “This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He sent” (John 6:28-29). In John 3:36 John is quoted as saying, “He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who does not believe/obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.” The word translated “he who does not believe” in the KJV and the NKJV and “he who does not obey” in the NASV is the verb apeitheo. The leading Greek Lexicon of the New Testament by Bauer, Arndt, Gingrich, and Danker makes a very insightful comment about apeitheo which sheds light on both John 3:36 and our passage, Matthew 7:21-23: Since in the view of the early Christians, the supreme disobedience was a refusal to believe their gospel, apeitheo may be restricted in some passages to the meaning disbelieve, be an unbeliever. This sense, though greatly disputed (it is not found outside our literature [i.e., outside the New Testament, the Apostolic Fathers, and other early Christian literature]), seems most probable in John 3:36; Acts 14:2; 19:9; Rom. 15:31. (BAGD, p.82) A person who trusts in Christ alone obeys completely the will of the Father to believe in Jesus Christ alone for eternal salvation. Such a person obtains absolute perfection before God [positionally speaking] since Christ takes away all of his sins and gives him His righteousness in exchange (2 Cor. 5:21; Col. 2:13-14; Heb. 10:1-18). And, such a person can be 100% sure of his salvation since he can know with certainty that he has done the will of the Father (in relation to the gospel) once and for all (cf. John 3:16; 5:24; Rom. 8:38-39; 1 John 5:13). Acts 5:32 and Acts 6:7 also refer to believing the gospel as an act of obedience to God. This passage, rather than supporting the Lordship Salvation or Works Salvation positions, actually contradicts them. Probably many of those who will say “Lord, Lord have we not prophesied, cast out demons, and done many wonders in Your name” are people who in this life were pastors, evangelists, missionaries, and the like. They may have baptized many, prayed and witnessed much, and done what they thought were many deeds which made them think that they were probably saved. Notice that Jesus does not question whether they actually did such deeds. Yet He rebukes them for not doing the Father’s will and He denies them kingdom entrance. Those who do not believe in Christ alone for their salvation have failed to do the will of the Father. I do not believe that those who hold to Lordship Salvation or even Works Salvation are necessarily unsaved. Many people who now believe in Lordship Salvation, and even some who now hold to out-and-out Works Salvation, came to simple trust in Christ alone at some point in their lives and later became confused about the gospel. On the other hand, it is a sad possibility that some in the Lordship Salvation movement and many, if not most, in the Works Salvation camp have never placed their trust in Christ alone. They may go to their graves preaching passages like Matthew 7:21-23 only to find out that Jesus was talking about them, not someone else. I hope and pray that such people wake up before it is too late. The way that leads to life is narrow (Matt. 7:13-14). Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but by Him (John 14:6). Self-righteous people are on the wrong path. They are on the broad way that leads to destruction (Matt. 7:13). Jesus came to save those who know that they are sick and lost and in absolute need of His deliverance (Matt. 9:12-13; Mark 2:17; Luke 5:31-32; 18:9-14). Of course, that is all of us, all of mankind. However, some people are unwilling to own up to the truth. The cross of Christ is a stumbling block to those who think that they are good enough to deserve kingdom entrance. Those who throughout the course of their lives reject the free gift of salvation and refuse to trust in Christ alone will find out that in reality they are sinners, those who “practice lawlessness” (Matt. 7:23). Only then it will be too late. What would you say if you appeared before God and He said, “Why should I let you into My kingdom?” Matthew 7:22 is the wrong answer. The right answer is, “Lord, I am an unworthy sinner who has placed his complete trust upon what Jesus did for me upon the cross, and He promised that whoever believes in Him has eternal life” (Luke 18:13-14; John 3:16; Rom. 4:5; Eph. 2:8-9; Titus 3:5). May we call people to do the will of God so that they can obtain entrance into the kingdom of God. Those who place their trust wholly in Jesus Christ have done the will of the Father and have already passed from death to life (John 5:24) and will not come into judgment regarding their eternal destiny (John 3:18).
