Lance Stroll’s latest Formula 1 setback in the Qatar Grand Prix provoked a severe social media backlash. He reacted to the latest in a string of disappointing qualifying performances by petulantly throwing his steering wheel, shoving one of his Aston Martin colleagues in the garage, then conducting a post-session interview with F1 TV’s crew that did a very good impression of a spoilt child having a sulk.
It’s not unusual for Stroll to be monosyllabic after poor results, but the way he handled this particular moment - losing composure after qualifying a massive 1.1 seconds behind Fernando Alonso - was most certainly on the more extreme end of the scale.

I mean, you're comparing Stroll's behavior to the likes of Senna, Schumacher, Verstappen, Alonso, and Hamilton. If you look at the times they lashed out, it was in the heat of championship battles. Not after weeks of being mediocre. Stroll is lashing out at his team for his own shortcomings, not really the same thing.

Fellow F1 KZfaqr Tommo showed in a video of his just how bleak the situation is. If AM entered with two Strolls, they would be down in P6 in the WCC. With two Alonsos, they'de be comfortably in P2. And in the WDC, he's currently just holding on to P10, Piastri already passed him and realistically speaking, Gasly at one point and Ocon at three points behind will likely overtake him as well. My point stands, if Aston Martin are really serious about fighting for championships, they need to drop Stroll. This is his seventh year in F1 and he is just not good enough to fight at the front.
@hagamapama
@hagamapama 8 ай бұрын
There aren't two Fernando Alonzos though. He's a legend, and he's covering up some serious weaknesses in the Aston-Martin car. Their car has fallen back in the grid over the year and is somewhere between Alpine and Mercedes in terms of quality and lo and behold, that's where they're averaging out, even with Lance Stroll having some serious confidence issues. Remember, Aston Martin finished in P7 in the last constructors. even P6 is a substantial improvement. Their car is better, but probably not P2 better. The fact that Alonso's managed to make it work is more of a credit to Alonso than it is a strike against Stroll. As a team like Aston Martin you aren't going to find 2 guys like Fernando Alonzo who was willing to drive a car that finished P7 last year. Anyone else in the same position would have similar problems to Stroll. It's part of the psychology of being an F1 driver. As pointed out, Stroll is definitely not the only driver dealing with this right now.

Perez ans Stroll should retire. It must be clear for Stroll senior that his son will never ne world champion. He's good in the wet (pole in Turkey), but there are no more races when it's raining. Yes, other drivers have ended up getting physical after being frustrated, but what makes Lance's outburst different is that he got physical with one of his employees. With drivers going mano-a-mano with each other, it may not be very sportsmanlike, but it was at least a "fair" fight. The power difference between Lance and his PT is what's problematic here. Basically Lance using his power within the team as a license to hurt those below him. There's no place for that kind of behavior anywhere, even and especially beyond F1.

It's weird to consider that Stroll is still one of the younger drivers on the grid. He wasn't only 2 years old when Fernando started in F1. Drugovich, the young talent waiting in the wings, is only a year and a half younger. Stroll has had flashes of brilliance in his career so far, but has yet to be able to string any of it together. Though this downward spiral is a bit different. Once these downward spirals begin it can be hard to get out of. The car is proper garbage right now though, even Alonso can't keep it on the road a lot of the time. Lance could potentially be a fine number 2 driver in a midfield team if he can pull himself out of this spiral. If he can't, he'd probably be properly good in sportscars. It's easy to be harsh on him because he's a pay driver, but for a pay driver he's on the better end of the spectrum (not a Lando, but much better than a Mazepin or even a Latifi).

The thing to understand is Lawrence Stroll does have people he has to answer to, most notably Honda in 2026. Honda will want one of they're drivers (possibly Yuki Tsunoda, possibly someone else) to be at Aston in 2026. And I don't think they'll be very happy if Lance Stroll stays, despite continuing to perform badly. Then there are Aston Martin's sponsors, they are investing there money into what they are being told is a 'serious championship challenging outfit' and yet they like everyone else can see how its being held back by nepotism. Why would you invest in a team that appears to only exist to give Lawrence Stroll's son a place on the F1 grid so he can finish near last, despite being in better machinery than those around him. Unless Lance Stroll miraculously turns a corner in terms of his performances next season, Lawrence Stroll will have pick between his team or his son, because Lance will cost Aston money from not only from missed profits from constructors championship, but also from sponsors who aren't willing to associate themselves with the nepotism or the poor performances connected to it.

Honda has got to be looking at this with major anxiety. After stupidly announcing a pullout of F-1 on the cusp of Max’s 1st championship, allowing enough time to go by where Red Bull had to make their own engine decisions going forward, and then absurdly deciding to come back, but with Aston Martin. Now they have a scenario of teaming with a lesser partner, with Alonso most surely retiring and Lance Stoll being the number one driver? Once again, mistakes by Honda’s management in F1 will pull defeat from the jaws of victory.

@e2rqey 8 ай бұрын
@@hagamapama he was not promoted. His father paid the Williams F1 team $80 million to give him full-time seat in F1. And they were having financial issues so of course they took it. In no way was he actually brought on due to his abilities or anything like that. His father just gave them a whole bunch of money they really needed simply to stay afloat. His "salary" was essentially allowance from his Dad (and still is) He doesn't have the mindset, drive and discipline needed for greatness. Nor does he have the competitive instincts or frankly, the talent. One cannot develop any of these things when they've never had to actually struggle or face real adversity in life. He's had every possible advantage and opportunity to become the best driver he can be, including literally 1 on 1 mentorship and lessons from 2 multi-World Drivers Champions (Alonso and Vettle) who were able to help him maximize his performance in he Aston Martin F1 car they both drove with him. With Vettle, he had one of the smartest drivers of all time, with some of the greatest academic understanding of the physics, dynamics, and mechanics of an F1 car that any F1 driver has ever had. And with Alonso he had one of the greatest pure instinct, feel, and raw car control masters in F1 history. Who also is one of the best wheel to wheel racers in F1 history. Both men are absolute legends, masters of their craft, with some of the most experience of any modern F1 drivers. And they were both racing as his teammate and experiening the exact same car as Lance, so they could give excellent feedback and advice. Despite getting what is basically priceless training and advice from those two, as well as spending his entire life pursuing a career in F1, and having his father spend hundreds of millions to give him multiple years of F1 racing experience without having to worry about actually retaining a seat based on merit and performance. Even after all of that, the best he can do is, performs on the low-end of aggressively mediocre. And at worst, he is just a danger to the safety of the other drivers, to himself, and to the reputation of F1. At no point has he looked to have any real ability to drive the new regulation cars at the level deserving of an F1 seat. It's clear his mental model and understanding of F1 cars was very lacking and he cannot adapt to the new cars which require far more skill to drive than the older regulations which had far more elaborate and forgiving suspension, dampeners, downforce and overall handling. So no. People are not being overly negative. He is only in F1 due to his father spending lots of money, and ontop of that he acts like a petulant child. He treats F1 like a weekend hobby or like a kid whos parents are making him play rec-league baseball. The closest he's come to taking F1 seriously is that ridiculous temper tantrum where even after that episode he was still too mentally slow to understand what he needed to do to actually improve. He will just continue to make the same mistakes over and over, while those around him continue to enable his extreme incompetence because that's what they are paid to do. Oscar Piastri could have done what the Strolls have done, but he got into F1 on pure merit and performance despite having the family wealth to have been a pay driver. But it was important to him that he achieve this without just relying on his family's money. Becuase he felt that to do that wouldn't be any real achievement for him. That fundamental difference in mentality is why Oscar Piastri could come into F1 and comprehensively outperform Lance Stroll in every meaningful way. It's clear that Oscar could have come into F1 his rookie season and beating Lance Stroll in equivalent machinery over the entire season. It likely would have been a near or complete whitewash in qualifying and race performance. Similar to what's happened with Lance vs Alonso. But probably slightly less extreme. If he was actually F1 material he wouldn't be the biggest pay driver in F1, and he wouldn't be a massive competitive hindrance for Aston Martin. Calling him a pay driver is honestly an understatement as the amount of money that has to be spent to keep him in F1 per season is significantly more than the average pay driver. Like multiple times more, if not 10X. And that's before considering the financial cost that his terrible performance actually has on the team, between the cost of all his crashes, and especially the tens of millions lost per season in World Constructors Championship positions. As this season especially, AMR has likely lost 1 or 2 WCC positions due to Lance Strolls constant underachievement. As a driver he does not bring a single benefit to Aston Martin as an F1 team. The only value he has is essentially via his father's investment in the team due to wanting to support his son.

@@hagamapama when you look at the sheer amount of time, money, effort, experience and expertise that was dedicated solely to getting Lance Stroll to be an F1 driver. Then see what the actual results and performance outcomes have been as a result, it is the most clear and damnning evidence of his complete lack of talent. If you gave most kids or sim racers with an interest in F1 the opportunities, time and resources that Lance Stroll has had over the course of his single seater racing career and in F1. The majority of those people would likely be substantially better than Lance Stroll. If you took the average sim racing influencer and just gave them the resources and opportunities that Lance Stroll has had over the multiple decades of his single seater development, they would likely be better than Lance Stroll. Oscar Piastri has natural talent, Max Verstappen has natural talent, Kimi Raikonenn has natural talent, Lewis Hamilton has natural talent. Lance Stroll has the best training/teaching/opportunities that money can buy. But he absolutely does not have natural racing talent. Certainly not to anywhere near the degree of an F1 caliber driver. He lacks awareness in wheel to wheel racing, he cannot adapt to new vehicles quickly (if at all), he cannot extract the maximum performance from a car, he cannot consistently produce good lap times, he cannot produce elite level single lap pace, he cannot provide quality feedback on car handling to the engineers, he doesn't have the sensitivity and subtle/smooth inputs of an elite driver, he cannot perform in high pressure situations, he cannot lead a team, he cannot bring the best out of those around him, he cannot maximize his results even on bad days. I could keep going, but I think you get the point. You can consider all the hallmarks of an elite F1 driver or elite athlete in general. All those behaviors and characteristics that we consider a truly elite competitor to possess. When you compare Lance Stroll against that list....its clear he possesses basically none of them.

He's driven brilliantly and actually been an extremely supportive teammate and team-player. The sole problem at Aston Martin right now is Lance Stroll; hes holding them back big time and they must know it. Just imagine where Aston could be if they'd had a driver like Piastri alongside Alonso, but by the looks of things now Mclaren will catch them comfortably in the constructors championship before the end of the season because they have two drivers bringing in the big points compared to poor old Alonso at Aston having to do it all alone.

Tbh I feel very 50:50 with this, we just saw that with two number 1 like merc, will cause fireworks occasionally. Stroll can be a good number 2 for Aston Martin

There isn't much to really discuss here. His dad bought a team for him to have a seat, and the team is still in a better place than they could have expected this year. This is a team designed to have a senior high placing racer who can be a rock for the team, and then Stroll takes the seat that other teams would use for bringing up the next driver. They sacrifice finding young talent for the seat he bought. If he does well, great, if he doesn't that also doesn't matter for him. It's just important the car can be competitive enough for the second (who is actually lead) driver to pick up some points. They aren't in this for top 3, they are in this for top 5 and a seat for his son.

Is it the case that Stroll is absolutely rubbish/unable to drive an F1 car? No. The problem is that he is not subject to the normal levels of F1 driver scrutiny. Aston Martin will not be a serious team until they drop Stroll.

Who makes the final decision on whether Lance stays or goes; Aston Martin Aramco Cognizant or Lawrence Stroll? Is there any difference? If Lance quits racing or is replaced, would dad still support the team?

They could do worse than get a steady driver in the mould of Hulkenberg or Bottas in the seat alongside Alonso. Stroll seems to have peaked and is now holding the team back. Alonso seemed to love his time in sports cars, no reason not to think Lance could not thrive there - although he'll never be an F1 great, he's still a very capable driver in the grand scheme of things.

I think if Lawrence wants to wins a championship then a change might have to be made. Lance needs to find some consistency in his performances. Options for Aston Martin could be Yuki. Interesting future for the team.

Lance should be moved across to the revived Valkyrie LMH programme so that the F1 team can bring in someone closer to Alonso's level. Outbursts or not, he's had more than enough time to raise his game to a title-worthy level and he simply hasn't. If he's just being strung along because his father wants a way to succeed vicariously through him, then there's a level to that which is frankly a bit tragic.

Wish we could swap Alonso with Perez, this way Stroll won't look as bad with an equal teammate, and we get a true championship fight.

I like the way we never get videos on how George conducts himself on the radio, or how Yuki swears all the time. Or when Kimi gave one-word answers to questions. The anti-Stroll agenda is well and truly ingrained in The Race.

Kimi is a literal world champion, George has won a race and had multiple podiums. Yuki performs well in that tractor of a car but most of all brings a lot of money to Alphatauri. Stroll is spoiled and not a very good driver who he doesn’t place high enough for the car he has. Also it’s not anti Stroll agenda he’s just not very good and the nepotism is dumb in this case because it doesn’t bring AM anything positive.

All 3 of those incidents dealt with a race victory. Irvine slowing Senna down with Prost chasing him down, Schumacher and verstappen lost a race win with collision with lapped cars. Stroll is not suited for the job.

I think the difference between the other outburst and this is that he is there more because of his dad than his driving. So any outburst he has get amplified. The fact is that AM could get a better driver. There are better drivers. This must really put his dad in a though spot. Must be a lot of people in the company that want stroll gone.

While I don't want to pile the pressure on stroll. His position at aston js becoming more untenable. There are plenty of promising rookies whove graduated from F2, therefore can't race in it. Coupled Lawrence's opposition to Andretti joining while his son keeps a seat warm. Stroll often doesnt make it out of Q1 while his team mate is playing (especially at seaons start) for podiums
