It's been six months since the game was launched in a poor Early Access state, the update has some ups and some downs, but also a lot of backwards steps which was very surprising. In this video I review Astride as it stands now after, technically, a full year of development.

What blows my mind is that the horse games industry is so terrible that all these projects Astride, Unbridled, Horse Tales, ECT. can all basically be the same product with almost no innovative ideas between them all and still rake in money and attention and people get hyped up and yet there still be not a single one actually finished. Every horse game advertising itself: Realistic horses, realistic breeding, realistic riding, realistic open world!! Also, every horse game: overpriced, a scam, unfinished, creatively bankrupt, rife with scandal. I wish I had the programming skill and money required to make the horse game I'd want to play lol; an actual adventure MMO. I'm so tired of these real life horse simulators that never amount to anything memorable.

@itz_wolfstreamergirl9549 There's only 2 coders now. Previously was only one, so no wonder things get implemented slowly. Others make 2D and 3D. Why they'd had to hold their work and wait for programmers? That would be wasting time. Working simultaneously on different things in the team is the most effective and normal way to work.

I don't get why horse games keep releasing unfinished or simply as something that wasn't promised? Why can't developers keep quiet a bit longer about the games or at least be honest about their process instead of scrambling to make a game that's not finished, and is a rip off. This is a case where a development road map would help a ton. I'm of the mindset that if a dev is going to be sharing their game with the public or requires any crowd funding that they should have an active, public road map to follow. This could help with what Rattle mentioned about peer pressure and the audience demanding different things from what the devs are planning. Honestly I have no clue how this game progressed backwards, but with my previous experience with dinosaur and dragon games, it's not a good sign.

Oh, okay. So, long hours were wasted adding these assets into the world to have a playable area, now they have to smooth out the terrain, and ensure the trees and terrain has hitboxes. And all that work will be scrapped and redone before the end of production. Marvelous.
@kharpa2597
@kharpa2597 6 ай бұрын
@@Anchorlesss assets are not the problem. Even with these "place holders" they could have made a better level design (I'm not asking for excellent one on this stage, just rearrange the objects) for better sense of space. Assets can be re-done and replaced later but if they make flaws in the core of the game then later this will be a nightmare to re-work. They have to think about any possible optimization of models and textures before even creating them

My biggest concern is that I believe this team is just to inexperienced to pull off such a big first game, I just can't see a game plan. In terms of just gameplay (like Rattles said) what is this game? An RPG, MMO, Adventure, Action, Sandbox, Simulation? What is the core gameplay, what is the player suppose to do. What are they suppose to acomplise, how will Astride end? The devs are prioritising the wrong things, I don't wanna give money to a game that I don't even know what it is going to end up being! This is my biggest issue with horse games, indie horse devs are creating games becouse they just want to ride a pixel horse. Horse games are being developed with just the horse riding in mind, the rest of the gameplay and story is just getting forgotten!
@liolikesgrass
@liolikesgrass 6 ай бұрын
To be honest, the best games I ever played were the CD ones. Back in the early 2000s, game developers had to create a story, with a beginning and an end. They focused more on that rather than graphics or realism, or even the horse in itself. This is why we loved Pipa F. (I don’t know the exact writing, we don’t call it that in French), or Real Stories, Mission Équitation (don’t know the name in English, again sorry). In that specific game, Mission Équitation (Goal : equitation), the dev team focused on the story so much ! The 3rd one (my personal favorite) includes liberty with a traumatised horse, dressage (with actual moves), cross country, show jumping, freaking VAULTING and even cinema ! And all within a story of respect towards horses and not hitting them and caring for them… Back in those days, devs had to create a story. They focused on that and the gameplay, game dynamics to create a game that people would actually play from beginning to end ! Nowadays, it feels like horse games start by creating the aesthetic and don’t care about the actual gaming experience. This is why we were so mad at Star Stable, ETG and so many others. Now SSO is doing better, and I have found myself actually playing some quests today : the rewards were interesting, I had fun playing. Key to a good horse game : forget the horses ! It is about them, and the story, and the gameplay, and the gamer. Not just the horses. Thanks for your video Rattle !❤

For me the visuals are disappointing especially on the horses from what we were promised ( I’m big on visuals especially of the horses in a HORSE GAME ) and the movement being so ganky feeling when jumping or when going into a another animation is really bothering me but hopefully it will get fixed. On a side note, I hope they let us do more with the camera because I’d like a first person perspective or at least be able to have the camera angled differently instead of the overhead view constantly and maybe even able to get closer up on the horse kinda like the up close view we get when they post a new video of the horse close up on their instagram posts

When Astride was announced I was still firmly in my SSO stage, and honestly, back then I didn't really like the concept of the game too much and was a vocal detractor, now I really hate the fact I was proven right. I not gonna lie I could really use a good horse game to scratch my riding itch, especially as after a disaster that was a character update and I wasn't even able to play as my characters (as I imagined them) I couldn't ignore other issues anymore and just left SSO, possibly for good, but as things are shaping up now Astride doesn't seem like that amazing game everybody was building it out to be anymore, which is such a pitty. SSO could definitely use some competition kicking their butts to start listening to the players again (or possibly sell the game to original SSO creators who actually cared and would bring the game back to what it used to be instead of replacing SSO with their other, lame, personalityless project, just saying), and we deserve to finally have some horse MMO that is actually good. I guess I'll still be following the development, but I will be very cautious when it comes to making a purchase, I hope the devs will manage to turn things around and that Astride will shine after all, but the pessimistic cynic in me kind of doubts it at this point. It's two strikes already, and the game isn't even out yet, this definitely doesn't look good.

I feel like SSO is actually improving a lot. The people who are mostly disappointed with the updates are those who have a lot of nostalgia for the old game. I admit, them changing the game bit by bit and making it into Theseus' ship isn't that great, but as a standalone game they're not doing anything to really burn it down imo. The new Hollow Woods are a vast improvement and certainly needed it. Them adding even more gameplay loops with it is amazing.

The game still has years of development left before it's estimated 'finish' date - sometime between 2026 and 2027. I wouldn't write it off just yet, every game goes through weird stages of development puberty before it's finished. The difference is that SSO has been classed as finished for 12 years and is still an overpriced, horribly buggy and poorly designed mess.
@aquamarina5216
@aquamarina5216 6 ай бұрын
@@MusicComet With all due respect but I strongly disagree. I have no nostalgia towards old games since I played SSO for two years and wasn't aware of it's history when I started playing, but when I discovered old games, things just looked so much better (maybe not graphically), and the story wasn't a total mess and characters seemed so much better (case in point Lisa). I'm also not against updates as I think SSO could make great updated characters, but what angers me to no end is that we the player, and main character, got the absolute worst of it (it is a taste issue I know, but conicly our character suppose to be 17-20 years old and to me they absolutely don't look their age now, and in most cases don't even look like a girl, which is fine to have as an option, but what if I want my character to look like a girl and have all the famine parts and be skinny? Huh SSO?). And SSO instance to completely rebuild stuff from the ground up instead of simply updating it is pretty infuriating in my opinion, and doesn't help my opinion that they really don't care about game's legacy.The worst is that with all the changes this game no longer feels like SSO, but more like some cheap SSO mobile knockoff. So yeah can't say about the state of a game since July since I left then and all knowledge I have comes from my friend when she sprinkles some (I don't ask and quite frankly don't care), the last thing I remember is something about Western Camp or something, and even though people liked it (I think) I have a lot to say about it replacing Midsummer. Just a friendly reminder that this is just my opinion, I am a fan of agreeing to disagree, I'm totally fine with other people liking the game, that's no skin off my back, heck my good friend still plays, likes the updated characters and other changes and we are still cool, so no shade towards anybody, you can like whatever you like, all power to you.

@@aquamarina5216 Nah, I'm all for seeing others' opinion on SSO. I admit that SSO isn't a total wreck in a lot of areas, but compared to when they were pumping out new horses 24/7, I think they do try to improve it a lot recently, although they have been sacrificing a lot of the old spirit to create something new more fitting of their current vision. Besides that, though, it doesn't seem entirely bad imo. It was nice to hear your side of the story!
@TheyCallMeChips
@TheyCallMeChips 6 ай бұрын
@@MusicComet As someone who's been playing the game for 8, almost 9 years, I respectfully have to disagree. It's impossible to have nostalgia for something that has hardly changed - yeah, the graphics look drop dead gorgeous in comparison to how they were 9 years ago, but the actual core gameplay is still the exact same as it was 9 years ago. Most of the gameplay is just reading text on a screen and doing 'point A to point B' quests, or buying horses and doing 'point A to point B' races. If you don't have friends on SSO, then that is literally all you have to do in the game. Even their championships are laughably bad - comparing SSO's championships to, say, Alicia Online is like comparing hot wheels to F1 racing. Another example is with the whole thing with Galloper and the witch lady where you're supposed to run away from them, you can literally escape them by taking a leisurely walk or trot as they follow slowly behind you. SSO relies *way* too much on the community to keep people playing the game rather than just making the game interesting and challenging. So no, it's not because of nostalgia, it's because the game is just horribly designed overall.

As much as it may seem like a good idea to keep every little thing in a game's development open and transparent 100% of the time, there's a GOOD reason why most if not all games with major success DO NOT SHARE EVERY LITTLE THING AS IT HAPPENS. Not just for the reasons as stated in the video, it also leads to a games development to move away from the passion it needs to being a money maker before its worthy of such. Before Astride released it or sure was a huge warning sign to me that most of the 'updates' and 'developments' where shown via drawn concept artworks. Concepts are IDEAS, not hard finished process. And by having the mindset to share every idea as soon as it starts for the game it naturally leads to disappointments because 1 ideas can change and 2 nto everyone will imagine the ideas as the same, meaning players will interpret the idea to be more/better than what was actually shown (take minecraft birch forests incident as a prime example or any of the mod votes) Not sharing every little thing as it happens before fully being able to ensure it will happen exactly as so is actually a huge point I learned from a video on tips for making content on youtube (so long ago i cant remember title or who made it even) But by not promising something before you put the behind the scenes work in helps with not having the community disappointed and the creators not becoming overwhelmed or burned out.

Like this way too early release was basically “we’re out of money, so give us money” also I got banned from their discord for calling out the mods for not being consistent with their modding due to me posting 1 photo of my fav band a day which I had to blur out of nowhere and then I accidentally send a spider emoji and they banned me 💀

I'm surprised to see how the game has gone backwards. I agree that the older version was actually much better potential wise and in looks/mechanics. My biggest fear for this game is that it is a concept, a dream and an artistic project. The team seem to be very capeable in art aesthetics, but not in game aesthetics. If you have art talent, using the materials you are used to is very easy and familiar. The endless drawings and models look amazing, but who is going to make these "concepts" fit the game. Who is going ot make them work? What worries me is that the majority of people working on Astride are not game developers. I see this a lot on upcoming Roblox games for example, where people make many, many beautiful models, concepts and even maps. Thses games NEVER make progress to playable games as they all lack something, and that is coders. This seems to be true of Astride, where even 2 people coding or working on mechanics might just not be enough. Coding is the most difficult, intense and challenging part of any game and it takes so much time to get it right.

I actually don’t agree with it being rushed because of demand from the players. Demand where…the discord is dead. Either everyone who was honest is banned or have all left, any comments that do roll in on occasion are mostly an echo chamber of “great job! Love it! Can’t wait for full release!” Etc. I don’t see anyone demanding anything, and they’re also not criticizing ANYTHING. I started writing this before you got to that point in the video, where you said the exact same thing lol. So we both agree it’s a barren echo chamber wasteland on the discord. But my point is they had no reason at all to rush this and put out the update in this fashion. None at all. No one asked for this lol

It's a pity that so many people who had good criticism for the game just... left. A lot of people think they were banned, but they weren't, they just left, Which is terrible when you think about it. I've had this experience in this discord, where if you suggest something you're almost immediately dogpiled into silence. But, I would like to point out that just because the discord is dead NOW does not mean players did not have a slew of demands the second the first EA landed, which means a tonne of things were planned and promised to appease upset players. Which in turn is understandable as the EA was a bitter disappointment and the devs wanted to make up the ground and prove they had a good product. I could of course be wrong, this is really just guesswork from an outsider's perspective. But yeah, it's a disappointment to be sure.

Oh boy the blue dots for jumping are like rly inaccessible design, if it's hard to see for most players then imagine how it might be for players with color blindness or other conditions that affect sight. It could probably be improved if they made it a more sharp and clear circle with a white or black outline. EDIT: No way they're using the most common thing in every swedish souvenir store as a COLLECTIBLE. I love Dala-horses but it would be more fun to have a horse in the game with a dala-pattern on it's coat, than a low-poly wooden sculpture

I bought the game when they first released earlier this year and asked for a refund shortly after, but wanted to keep my eye peeled on the development of this game. It's saddening to see the state of the game. The only thing I like about this version's graphics is the lack of that blue-ish tint on the horses shadows. In 6 months it feels likte they went backwards.

At first I was thinking that 2026 seemed like a reasonable time for the game to be fully completed, but if updates are coming out only ~twice a year with not much gameplay content in each update… I think there might be some trouble 😅 At this game's current state, it's not much more than twenty-five dollars for a horse customization game. On a more positive note, though, I like that the developers are really communicating and listening to their current supporters. If the game is able to get on it's feet and start walking, they won't stop.

The riding system is SO different and I cannot wait for it to release. Supported them on Patreon for a while too when I still had some money. Astride however seems to be the biggest disappointment ever, and I do not believe for a second that they will ever release an actual game.

Roblox Games are showing more development than horse games that can be found on other sites. And better yet, they never ask for money from you. Yes, you can buy gamepasses n stuff of that nature, but you can either do that or just play for free. Some suggestions of the better horse games I've played on roblox: Wild Horse Valley (Good mechanics as far as training special moves/gaits onto your horses, also great for role-playing and you can catch horses by crafting lassos. All horses spawn in the wild eventually. Private servers hightens the chance of getting rarer horses before someone else catches it.) Lake County Stables (Amazing as far as gameplay goes, horse throws u off at some jumps, horse gets sweaty and you have to groom it, the horses have decent customization going on, gaits look amazing for a roblox game, they have a main map right now and a indoor arena, very soon they are adding a trail ride area you can teleport to. AMAZING game for Realistic Roleplay Videos or just Roleplay in general.) Horse Valley (This game is one of my older favorites, but like some horse games, it's very repetitive. Nothing really new in the past few updates that changes the quality of life of the said game.)

This is so bad and sad. I bought the game trying to support them since it looked promising for a very early game demo, although still too pricey I gave a benefit of the doubt so this could knock sso off their high horse of greed. But seeing this...and they wanna add collectibles to this mess? this is bad, really bad, the game doesn't look like its former self.

Not only should they really not even have early access yet but the only teams that should have any kind of MMO/online multiplayer feature upon release are large studios. Small projects like this should be focusing on making a strong, finished base product and then they can worry about trying to expand and add multiplayer later. Start with something smaller, finished, and good quality that people will enjoy and you'll have more luck getting funding from them for expansion.

Why is it that almost every horse game that comes out or is in development turns into a disaster? I find it interesting that games that don’t focus on horses get it right. I love playing red dead because the horse mechanics work well even though it’s not a horse game! I even enjoy playing Roblox horror games and silly dumb games more because there is more meat and heart put into it than these sad horse games. You don’t need massive games to be great. I think horse game developers tend to bite off more than they can chew. Or it’s turned into a strange pissing contest to see who can make the best game? But then it all falls apart like a table collapsing under a science project. I don’t know what is going on but it’s extremely disappointing. I swear horse games are cursed.

I don’t get why they don’t just make the jump on a button, based on the jump, your speed, and the horses stats will determine how high the horse goes then if your model touches a pole count that as a fault (also let the physics engine deal with moving the pole when you hit it). I think they wasted a lot of time on this over thought out and clunky mechanic. They should take tips from TORR’s jumping mechanic that isn’t this overly complicated. Edit: I paused your video to comment this literally a second before you stated my entire point hahaha

Oh, I guess you’re right Rattle I mean, Green horse’s live streams look a bit slow when he’s coding, not to judge on his knowledge or something but when I used to code I knew what I was doing and quickly was able to look for the errors and fix it. I know that it looks like they’re just focusing on assets and looks, but I’m beginning to think that the programmers don’t really know what’s going on with the code or are just being too slow. Bc while the 3D artist and the animator have finished a whole piece the game itself is still umm… very buggy and the mechanics are not that good. Ofc that a game is more complicated than a simple program but I mean there’s two programmers now, but I feel like they’re still at the same pace as before. Maybe I just said a lot of bs but that’s what it feels like.

after heavily supporting this games development and the devs for a year now, unfortunately since that "early access" release ive slowly lost my respect for the devs, and this update isnt making it any better. i understand they wanted to go the more realistic route for graphics and textures, but holy shit, skyrim did better with that and that game is how old now?? what is their lighting issue?? why do they suddenly have this uneven terrain issue that wasn't even a thing from their wip posts? why cant they take inspo from tales of rein ravines striding mechanic? its the only good one in these horse games and i love it. this is fucking awful and it seems like they just keep going backwards, im beyond disappointed in them and have lost my faith in their improvement. i cant believe this is what we get after SIX WHOLE MONTHS. i will still watch from a distance of course, because maybe a freaking miracle will happen and they become the game they want/what people expect it to be (especially since ive also given them a good amount of money lol), but that's all. also, anytime theres criticism in the discord, it gets fought back with the white knights and mods. the devs also do not like it it seems, so thats why it seems like everyones all positive and praising them all the time because all the discussion gets deleted if it heats up. its ridiculous, on the verge of being etg all over again

I think horse game developers should definitely focus more so on appealing to non-equestrians. It should be equally appealing to both sides. Caring, dressage, and trail riding isn't enough content to keep ANYONE playing consistently, you can kill me for saying this but start stable does this right. They appeal to both non-equestrians and equestrians by giving us quests. Horse tales got the right idea, however the content is simply lacking. I think this is just an untapped market, hopefully a star will shine through and create an addicting horse game. Its extremely sad to see these young developers trying to take on something they probably shouldn't because it really doesn't take them anywhere.
