If the timeline in this film seems a bit weird, Francis Ford Coppola was brought on to do the final edit after test screenings. This meant putting a lot of what happened before the dimension jump to after, removing plot points, removing the disturbing mutant flesh baby (Karl's son), etc. Sadly most of the deleted scenes are nowhere to be found, but the few on disc they released tease a much deeper film. The original version was supposed to be much darker, with a completely different ending.

thats not how the movie ends at all, you screwed up the last 15 mins. the device explodes REWRITING all of creation and the entire universe is being remade, all they do is buy themselves time as they run away.

Oh, this old movie... I don't remember that they flew 2 million light years, which is almost as far as Andromeda galaxy, an enormous distance, but if they have a ship that can achieve 99.9999999999.... percent of the speed of light, it is achievable, but there is a pair which is worried if they will have permission for a child... That is illogical, when they will get to the Earth, 4 million years will pass, so I don't think someone will care, or that human beings will look like them at all... In any case, mediocre movie, no matter that the cast was good.
