I love the idea of Asuka needing actual bookmarks to find his spells, like he just doesn't know where any of these spells are and his entire combat system entirely relies on his bookmarks not falling out mid-combat. Like, imagine he drops his book and all the bookmarks fall out and he just stops fighting because he has to check the glossary whenever he wants to cast a spell.

Future patch notes for Asuka are gonna be 5 pages long just covering spells

I will live knowing that I will never even try to learn this guy but instead watch and live vicariously off of someone who’s dedicated enough to master this character

I appreciate that his inputs seem simple with the cancel inputs, so you can apply all that mental stack to card counting

One interesting thing of note is that he’ll only ever have one spell card for his ice-spire dp and that it’ll always be part of test case one. Definitely something you should keep in mind when playing as or against him.

15:38 it's not the DLC characters, it's all the characters from the Backyard. Ramlethal, Elphelt and Jack'O are essentially "3d fighting game", "First person shooter" and "Realtime strategy". That Man is definitely Magic : The Gathering with 3 decks, haha!

What I love about this kit, and whats not uncommon in ArcSys games either, is that it sounds like one of those movesets you'd read by a 14 year old just putting all the 'cool ideas' that come to mind onto a notepad doc. The kind where you read it and go "yeah this is way too overly complicated, would never work, and probably take too many resources to even make." Then here comes ArcSys and goes "yo, xX_DanteFan2001 has some sick ideas; lets make it work"

I think the only difference between orb super P and K is P is affected by the gravity and speed up staves, and K isn't. From what they said, there isn't anything else about those.

Test case fitting into different three different archtypes is so smart. It's a great way to guard against overwhelming the player. He's almost a stance character, it's really cool.

Although he looks super complicated, I like how you can still probably start out by just spamming spells/managing resources and slowly get a feel for the "flow" of different sequences of spells and the feeling of the different decks

They did talk about the K version of the super, the only difference between them is that the P version is affected by the Staffs efects, while the K version is not and only goes straight.

Something to note about the decks is they all have the 3 basic projectile spells in them, meaning youll likely always have access at some point to a basic fireball. Because of this think that deck 2 will end up being the most well rounded, since it allows you to be more aggressive while still having said basic projectiles

Characters having multiple ways to alter their frame data at the end of blockstrings is such a breath of fresh air, since we don't have many jump-cancellable normals. Testament does that reasonably well with partial charge Grave Reaper, and I think I might like this one a lot more. The one annoying thing compared to other item characters will be getting used to the spell button changing wildly with card position all the time. It's a very different dynamic, and each deck of cards will have it's own flow (although some of the spells are shared between all decks).

I think they did mention what the k super does though. It is unaffected by the staff cards that alter the properties of your projectiles so that you don't have to worry about them messing up a combo.

I noticed in the vs Pot footage that he destroys a cube with far S. and I think he destroys a staff too. If this works with all normals, Asuka may struggle in some match ups where characters can keep hitboxes up. My first guesses for "this is going to be completely degenerate" are the spell that sucks in projectiles for oki and the spell that produces 2 waves of cubes. Due to the interactions with his resource, I'm also curious how canceling into the recover/redraw cards is going to play out. Imagining him just dumping a full mana bar with discount spells, redrawing with another spell, then dumping another one.

I really hope that we get more characters like this, all the dlc have been cool but this is the first time I’m so impressed with the how they took a high concept into a streamlined functioning character. Can’t wait to try him!

I feel like the high mental stack of playing this character combined with having to keep an eye on his meters might make it easier to mix him

Starter guide is the longest by far, out of all the characters... and they basically at some point said: Fuck you we aren't explaining all the spells go look it up in game.

In a game like strive, this movelist size including spells is huge compared to other characters. In tekken, this is still a small movelist with most characters having 80-100 moves. Then a character like Xiayou or Hworang exists that have even more moves and they are tricky. Those characters can be awful to fight because of how much knowledge checking they can do. But in this game, having to only know like 30 spells isn’t that actually as bad as I first thought it would be.

I like how the symbols for his test cases are all phases of the moon: a waxing/waning crescent, waxing/waning gibbous, and full moon I think technically both the crescent and gibbous are waning but considering the order 1-3 they are probably meant to be waxing building up to the full moon

I love how he has a unique direction cancel, I just wonder if you have to use it after the first cast because I highly doubt they'd let us cancel into another cancel

This character looks hype as hell but I would have to play the game so much more than I currently do to really play him... But I'm considering making it happen. The fantasy of popping the bookmark reload super and making lightning speed synergy evaluations calls to me.

I think hitting the orbs and his staff’ll actually be a pretty important thing for counter-play and knowing when to get a projectile off the screen and how to go about getting rid of the staff and everything. They showed it in the gameplay and it seems pretty neat. I could also be completely wrong but idk, thought it was pretty neat

Hopefuly the decks/spell strength is varied enough so he swaps midround instead of just "pick the deck with the most of X card and fish"

The first thing I've noticed with the three decks is the distribution of the low and overhead projectile. Deck 1 has 1 of each, Deck 2 has 3 of each, and Deck 3 has none. Deck 3 does have 4 of the 'two-wave of cubes' projectiles and 4 teleports. So Week 1 Asuka might just wanna dip into Test Case 3 to get those since they're the most obviously useful spells for doing grimy shit. I do notice that Deck 1 curiously only has 1 of an ice looking projectile which makes me curious if it's something strong like a invincible projectile.

You're going to be feeling like an untouchable master wizard, the universe at your fingertips, and then sol, leo or nago are going to punch you in the face and steal your lunch money.

One thing I find interesting is that people will be able to do "card counting" with his spells. For example, if you're using test case 3, and you only used teleport once, you can tell how likely you are to get teleport spell based on the number of spells you have left in the test case. Chance for teleport = Number of unused teleports in test case / Number of spells left in the test case.

Asuka looks so good, I feel like he might be overpowered in 2 years when people actually play him correctly.

Looks like you can actually chain with one of them into more conversions. It's a weird juggle but it can be converted. Also the double wave can go into 50/50 mix ups with teleport. That is if you can teleport in front of them or in place as you can teleport in rear. He can some interesting mechanics on his projectiles. So if someone actually wants to spend time with him. They can find some good stuff. I know fgc players can be smart. There are a lot of scientists in fgc that can figure out some crazy conversions and trick with this dude. Can't wait to see what they come up with. The weird juggle state was at 3:08. It is after the triple green cube. But it is also after he was sent into the air first in the order placed. May be other juggles that can do it. But also notice that the cubes were able to slow down on that spot for him to land on the bottom cube to juggle further. It was 2 blue cubes into the triple green cube. But also has taken out staff. Edit: Sorry for the long comment. Just excited and also learning and writing as I watch. The staff does it! So this dude is a technical character and may be a skill ceiling type of character. I am so down for him. Secondary is replaced by this dude. There are great conversions with staff. Thanks for the video. Edit 2: This character will probably be one of those characters that will need the most attention to master and will always be finding new stuff from time to time. It's not a pick up and go character to use at an extremely high and technically skilled level. There is so much. The amount of possibilities and combinations. It's seriously is a lot to take in and stuff.

Finally a character that i can play the Japanese Yu-Gi-Oh OST with and it'll be hype ever single time. I'm definitely hitting fools with Passionate Duelist every single time.

I am legitimately considering changing my top row buttons to P/K/S/HS in preparation for Asuka so that his gauges on screen better match what buttons I need to press, and also a little bit because my current layout is maybe a little too special, and it would make the FD/6P OS easier. He looks insane and so much fun, but I also know that I'm terrible at learning deep technical characters, so I'm wondering if this could help me in the long run once I develop the new muscle memory.

So my question: can you “deck out”? Like if you spend all 30 spell cards, does the Test Case/deck get reset and reshuffled or is it just gone and done? Mind you this is probably a fringe case but I’m just curious.

I'm really disappointed that we got him instead of Slayer but this still has to be the coolest mechanical representation of a spellcaster character in a fighting game that I've seen.

I think they did a good job of making him fit his lore, while also making him a new and exciting character. Now we just need someone to master him, get to Evo Grand finals, and fight a Sol player for the real lore win.

I dunno if this jumped to mind for anyone else, but the more I saw how Change Test Case works, I was thinking a lot of the moon system from Actress Again, and how it can (potentially) change the playstyle and pace of the match,. I'm sure there's probably gonna be a build that is better than the other two, but even so, this is probably one of the most interesting characters that Arcsys has put out in a while, if not for this season. I'm very excited to play them and see what people can do with Asuka.

Chant being Air OK and one of his spells being a low makes me wonder if he has an Aerial Low

For the supers I think they show both. The P super is a cube and is affected by other spells (like all his other cubes) and the K version is a sphere and it just shoots forward and ignores the staff.

So basically get knockdown in test case two and then use S super to grab both overhead and low for meaty mix. Brother, this is gonna be a fun character.

At the end they show potemkin hit spells and destroy them and even cancel off it, im a little worried about the viability of zoning with it lol, i hope its strong Ive been looking forward to a projectile throwing character

I'm pretty sure the only different between the P Super and the K Super is whether or not the staffs change their movement. The K version should just always go straight, while the P gets sucked in.

I'm kinda concerned about the viability of deck one. The demonstration was showing Pot of all people wiping out the cubes with F.S and 2H of all things. The three hit cube will probably beat me since it's a three hitter. Another concern is whether these projectiles even count as projectiles if the properties are weird. Also curious about how his mana drains are calculated and whether it's hit based or damage based. Will lustshaker drain all the mana because it's bajillion hits? or will Potbuster's damage be the massive mana drainer due to the damage?

The fact that chant can be cancelled into > bookmark, recover mana , change test case and itself, is actually nuts.

You'll have to be some kind of genius to play this character at max efficiency. Mad respect to anyone picking up Asuka. As soon as Knight started on Bookmarks i mentally signed out lol!!

Continually impressed by how ASW can design a character as complex as this while making everything pretty clear and intuitive as far as mechanics go for both the player and the opponent. I only hope that one of his cases isn't so much stronger than the others that it dominates usage time.

He has 26* unique spells (there are 6 versions of the staff that i counted individually, if you dont then only 20) which are alot but since most spells overlap testcases its a little less complicated than it looks

Im probably wrong here but on his particle super it looks like the only difference between the punch and kick version is that the kick version does not interact with his other spells, in the demonstration you see that he uses the gravity staff both times but only one of them gets pulled in, take it with a grain of salt that this could be false because the second time it looks like he just uses the super faster so it could be that the projectile just traveled across the screen before the gravity staff could fully kick in

They did actually show off both versions of the Orb super. One interacts with the staffs and one doesn't.

Hit celestial with jacko and millia, and kind of dropped out of the game afterwards. Was hoping a new character would pull me back in, but I’m not at all interested in learning this shit. Maybe season 3 will have someone that pulls me back in.

It was confusing for me at first. They should've talk about change test case first, then bookmark... And at the end say that it cost mana. Tell us we need a specific group of card to choose from; That you need to bookmark to switch and that you need mana to do it.

Suppose you're in a deck that has like 2x 2x 2x the best spell and you already used all 6 in your first 10 spells. Bookmark Full Order + mashing x 20 inputs in the timeframe = reset to a new deck to try and get them again? Gonna have to warm up my mashing before each set

The more I watch this the more I can't help but think this is how the Smash version of Hero would be implemented if GG if they were a character. Only difference is there is no menu to pick from just hope the cards line up.

This is probably the most complex character I’ve ever seen(besides +r Johnny). It does leave a bitter taste in my mouth that Asuka is so in depth and Sin was probably the biggest disappointment(besides DBFZ not having rollback). I am glad we are finally getting some real depth in strive. Anything but HC. Even Elphelt wasn’t that bad.
