In this video Dr. Strauss, a chiropractor specializing in scoliosis treatment, explains that scoliosis is a lifelong condition that does not cease to progress but varies in its rate over time. Based on Natural History studies from various parts of the world, he notes that scoliosis can be either adolescent, persisting into adulthood, or degenerative, starting in middle age due to wear and tear. In children, the curvature of the spine progresses rapidly, at a rate of 10 to 20 degrees per year, until skeletal maturity is reached, after which the rate slows significantly to about 0.5 to 1 degree per year. From age 40 onwards, the progression rate slightly increases, and further accelerates after age 60. Strauss highlights the importance of early treatment to manage the condition and prevent severe curvature over time.
