An ATACMs strike destroys a Russian fuel storage depot in Luhansk City Sanath Link www.gofundme.com/f/helping-uk...

"An oil depot in occupied Luhansk was struck by ATACMS missiles, causing a mass fire at the facility, the Moscow-installed head of the occupied region, Leonid Pasechnik, claimed on May 8. Russian proxy later reported that five employees of the oil depot were injured and hospitalized, power lines were damaged, houses in the immediate area were partially de-energized, and a high-pressure gas pipeline was on fire." Pretty good return on the investment there.

The fuel depot attacks appear to be a priority over most other strategic targets, and the pattern has emerged recently. It will hurt Putin more than many other wins, since he doesn't care about manpower losses. This will lead to fuel and $ shortages, and the peasants may be revolting. I mean may revolt.

The choice of targets may be partially driven by the presence of GPS jammers everywhere. ATACMS use both GPS and inertial navigation and if there's a jammer nearby, accuracy suffers. An oil depot makes a big target and even if you're off a bit, you still have a good chance of hitting _something_ that will burn or blow up or be important.
@chaosopher2319 күн бұрын
An oil depot makes a great target, especially when there are thousands more tanks (where they came from) but only 22 oil refineries and no one there to build or repair the ones being exterminated. If you can't feed the thousands of tanks, they're not quite as good as tits on a nun or balls on a priest. The tanks aren't even pleasantly decorative when useless. It's one of the most brilliant military moves I've ever seen. When all of this is over, it is in every nation's best interest to form excellent relations with Ukraine.
@foamer44319 күн бұрын
ATACMS vs oil storage. Not cheap missiles, but think of the damage 180,000 projectiles does to to all those storage vessels. Even if they weren't destroyed and were just shredded, the product remaining is now contaminated, the leakage around the vessels is now a highly toxic and flammable area making repair work extremely hazardous. Plus the bonuses of stopping sale for export income and possible use by the ORC's. Seems like a win to me.

@jajabez837919 күн бұрын
"Russia has the advantage in the tanks, armoured vehicles & supply trucks" Seriously, to the extent that that has been true they've p*ssed that advantage away. Their huge inheritance of already-made AFV's from the USSR is gone when it's gone, and if they were able to say, produce T-90s as fast as they were losing tanks of all types then the T-90 would be becoming the standard, default MBT allocated to all units. It isn't. Regarding 'trucks', the Russians began their invasion with a centralised, push-organised, unpalletised, railway-based logistics system. They have been in a 'Red Queen' situation ever since; trying to add enough trucks to not only cover losses but meet the ever-increasing need for more of them as 'supply-dumps' have to be dispersed and the major/railhead depots have to be further and further away from the front to be safe for the laborious business of unloading, sorting, storing and distributing all the stuff as it arrives (or doesn't).

ATACMS makes perfect sense to me. Just one spreads up to 950 bomblets over a area up to 200m which means multiple oil tanks can be covered with explosions. Depending on the size of the oil depot, it wouldn't take many ATACMS to blanket the entire area maximising the damage they can cause. While a drone allows you to pinpoint a target to a certain degree you can't beat the potential destructive power of 950 bomblets on a highly flammable target.
