"An oil depot in occupied Luhansk was struck by ATACMS missiles, causing a mass fire at the facility, the Moscow-installed head of the occupied region, Leonid Pasechnik, claimed on May 8. Russian proxy later reported that five employees of the oil depot were injured and hospitalized, power lines were damaged, houses in the immediate area were partially de-energized, and a high-pressure gas pipeline was on fire." Pretty good return on the investment there.

The fuel depot attacks appear to be a priority over most other strategic targets, and the pattern has emerged recently. It will hurt Putin more than many other wins, since he doesn't care about manpower losses. This will lead to fuel and $ shortages, and the peasants may be revolting. I mean may revolt.

The choice of targets may be partially driven by the presence of GPS jammers everywhere. ATACMS use both GPS and inertial navigation and if there's a jammer nearby, accuracy suffers. An oil depot makes a big target and even if you're off a bit, you still have a good chance of hitting _something_ that will burn or blow up or be important.
@chaosopher23
@chaosopher23 19 күн бұрын
An oil depot makes a great target, especially when there are thousands more tanks (where they came from) but only 22 oil refineries and no one there to build or repair the ones being exterminated. If you can't feed the thousands of tanks, they're not quite as good as tits on a nun or balls on a priest. The tanks aren't even pleasantly decorative when useless. It's one of the most brilliant military moves I've ever seen. When all of this is over, it is in every nation's best interest to form excellent relations with Ukraine.

ATACMS vs oil storage. Not cheap missiles, but think of the damage 180,000 projectiles does to to all those storage vessels. Even if they weren't destroyed and were just shredded, the product remaining is now contaminated, the leakage around the vessels is now a highly toxic and flammable area making repair work extremely hazardous. Plus the bonuses of stopping sale for export income and possible use by the ORC's. Seems like a win to me.

Seems it might not be a futile attack. It is a fuel depot close from the front lines, and one that is certainly used to refuel the Russian armor deployed further west. Its destruction will surely hampers the movements of the Russian armor on the front, and stretch further thin the already flimsy supply lines of the Russians.

"Russia has the advantage in the tanks, armoured vehicles & supply trucks" Seriously, to the extent that that has been true they've p*ssed that advantage away. Their huge inheritance of already-made AFV's from the USSR is gone when it's gone, and if they were able to say, produce T-90s as fast as they were losing tanks of all types then the T-90 would be becoming the standard, default MBT allocated to all units. It isn't. Regarding 'trucks', the Russians began their invasion with a centralised, push-organised, unpalletised, railway-based logistics system. They have been in a 'Red Queen' situation ever since; trying to add enough trucks to not only cover losses but meet the ever-increasing need for more of them as 'supply-dumps' have to be dispersed and the major/railhead depots have to be further and further away from the front to be safe for the laborious business of unloading, sorting, storing and distributing all the stuff as it arrives (or doesn't).

ATACMS makes perfect sense to me. Just one spreads up to 950 bomblets over a area up to 200m which means multiple oil tanks can be covered with explosions. Depending on the size of the oil depot, it wouldn't take many ATACMS to blanket the entire area maximising the damage they can cause. While a drone allows you to pinpoint a target to a certain degree you can't beat the potential destructive power of 950 bomblets on a highly flammable target.

Fuel storage and manufacturing facilities are far more important than the weapons that burn the fuel. If the weapons can't get to the front, well, Russia will just have to surrender, and everyone will see Сделано в России, Республике Украина. 🇺🇦 🇺🇦 🇺🇦 Слава Україні!!! Героям слава!!! 🇺🇦 🇺🇦 🇺🇦

The main purpose may have been something else than hitting the depot. Perhaps telling the Russian's the can hit this area, which could make Russian's think twice about sending reinforcements this way, or something else?

Minor, silly correction: fuel is not a solid target, but a liquid one

Approx. 1 million-dollar missile for an oil depot. It must be strategically important to Russians.

They transport by rail. The smallest drone takes out the rail for a day. Send one every day. Send one at the repair crew. They can't defend the entire railway. Seems easy to me. Blocks ALL the oil transport instead of destroying 1 out of 1,000 fuel depots. I must be wrong somewhere, but I don't get it.

This is a good target so long as it is true. The expanded motor of an ATACMS on the side is suspect as being true. Matter of fact, it may not have been ATACMS at all but other flatforms such as drones. Leonid Pasechnik, Red installed thug of the region, is the one who claims ATACMS but I wouldn't believe one word from him. He'd rather admit to ATACMS that struck the fuel depot than a drone or worker's error. (Swimming in ATACMS is not likely -- I just disagree) It is good to see the fuel storage site was destroyed! This fuel site is not so close to the battle front. I'd like to hear about one or two or ten destroyed nearer to the battle front. Thank you for the clip.

Putin is under pressure to make gains before more USA's aid reaches the troops. Hitting near fuel and ammunition logistics has the most impact on the tactical readiness of Putin's plans; it buys Ukraine time.

It spreads the defences they need to protect fuel somehow no military can operate without it. They consume fuel at astronomical rates.

Not sure why fuel infrastructure wouldn’t be considered a strategic target…if they have no more or even limited fuel, than there already bad logistics get even worse limiting advance and resupply etc…no need to destroy helicopters that can’t get off the ground because no fuel. This would be the most strategic target and bang for your buck if you have limited missiles and certainly wouldn’t mean they are absolutely swimming in them. Hopefully they are swimming in them and hopefully they continue to completely reduce them to horse and buggy technology.

That's just a radius. The shaded area is what covers potential firing zones and Eastern Ukraine is shaded.

Suchomimus doesn't know where the missile was launched from, but he does know where the missile landed. It is the only way to show possible launch sites, and there was plenty of free eastern Ukraine inside the distance marker.

This isnt a one off just because they used different munitions. Attacking fuel supplies is a coordinated effort. Sorry they forgot to notify you.

Russia stop exporting refined oil products at the end of March. Refineries have hit two ways, one by kinetic attack and by blockade of replacement parts and support from the West.

They seem to be bipolar on that. Exporting one week, them moratorium on exports for 6 month. Then back to exporting the next week. They will have shortage unless they play this right. But they need the export money.
