0:20 The ATACMS missile dispenses bomblets by spinning up at altitude. The height determines the pattern on the ground. However, the M74 APAM grenades decend more slowly than the main missile section which consists primarily of the high pressure steel propulsion section and control sections. The "dud" is consistent with the main body impacting farm soil. There is another impact seen mid-screen, consistent with a main body impacting paved roadway. Since the ATACMS is a maneuvering missile (rather than ballistic), the bomblet pattern trajectory and main missile trajectory end points are not necessarily coincident.

Was the first one really a dud? Ukraine used a technique a few months ago with artillery hitting a troop formation in a field when the first round is normal munition, so the natural instinctive reaction of the troops is to get down onto the ground. Which is absolutely ideal for the successive strikes of cluster munition which have a much better spread out target.

I don't think that first "hit" in the lower left was a dud - it appears that it was the rocket section that landed after it distributed it's payload. Slow motion videos from ATACMS testing show the cluster missile spins rapidly right before the fairings separate and the APAMS scatter. That black puff is likely the drone capturing the impact of the rocket motor from one of the ATACMS rounds.

Best and most urgent place for active defense - or should we say: ATACM' defense? Ukraine's defense forces are taking measures to drive the Russian invaders out of the village of Ocheretyne in the eastern Donetsk region. That's according to Lt. Col. Nazar Voloshyn, spokesperson for the Khortytsia group of forces, Ukrinform reports, citing ArmyInform. "With regard to the situation in Ocheretyne, the enemy managed to break through and dig in in this settlement. Part of it is under the control of the enemy. This part is under our fire control. The Armed Forces and Defense Forces are taking all measures to drive the enemy out of there. Heavy fighting is currently going on there. The Armed Forces are monitoring this situation," Voloshyn said. According to him, the enemy deployed up to four brigades in this area to develop their tactical success and break through Ukrainian defenses. "For our part, measures are also being taken to stabilize the situation, in particular, to regain control over Ocheretyne. To do so, additional forces and resources have been deployed from the reserve," he said. Earlier, Voloshyn stated that the Ukrainian Armed Forces controlled two-thirds of the villages of Ocheretyne and Soloviove.

A dud wouldn't surprise me. Most of the missiles sent so far date back to the 1990's. The US hasn't been supplying their latest stuff...yet.

I have to wonder if both sides deliberately choose not to use expensive SAM missiles on relatively cheap spotter drones. This is instead of it being a matter of them being incapable of shooting down the spotter drones.

Drones don't fit the typical profile of a SAM target. All this stuff was designed to shoot down big hunks of metal traveling at high velocity. If they widened the targeting profile, waterfowl would go extinct in Ukraine. "Your goose is cooked," would take on new meaning.

One or two Atacms missiles were shot down. But the irony is that the submunitions fell to the ground anyway. The rod and fragmentation parts of anti-aircraft missiles cannot destroy the entire cargo carried by a missile with many bombs.

The circumference of the cluster of bomblets appears to be about 100m, and chances are most of the personnel in those circles were knocked out of the battle. What a nasty weapon!

The first hit is not a dud. Its the front part of the missile slamming into the dirt at mach 3. It breaks away to let the clusters muni out. It think what we see here is the M39A1 (ATACMS Block IA) Its a horrible weapon to use tbh. Dont like one bit. Tactical nukes are just one step away..

That is not a dud. It is the carrier vehicle impacting the ground. The trajectory and timing between its landing and the cluster impacts matches, and a fully "dud" cluster munition is a statistical improbability - if it was carrying any amount of explosives and fuel and missed or was intercepted, you will not see the characteristically black plume that quickly disperses. That is what happens on training bombs impacts, because while often supersonic in speed, they do not have any innate explosive potential. And completely expected to see the same from any heavy piece of metal hitting the ground really fast.

Thought I'd heard before that for cluster munitions on troops they prefer the troops be lying on the ground rather than standing so they'll first hit with a normal explosive and then follow it up a few seconds later with the cluster bomb. This fits well with what you've shown since the "dud" and first cluster bomb are in the area with the troops and that's the only area that received more than one strike.

Requirement for advanced munitions is reportedly a shelf life of at least 10 - 20 years with only minor losses in reliability. However with 10 - 20 being the absolute minimum requirement, I would think that the industry standard is probably more like 20 - 30 years. Of course there will most definitely be a minor loss in reliability before the 20 - 30 years are over, as allowed by the requirements. It's safe to assume these cluster ATACMS in the clip are the same early 1990s batch we've seen pictures of. Reports say they're close to their max shelf life, which absolutely would make sense given the age of already beyond 30 years. With that in mind I think it's not that surprising to see a dud. What is surprising however is that the US isn't just freely giving away what is at its mac shelf life and hence up for dismantlement anyway. Giving away what needs to be dismantled soon is not only not costing anything, but actually *saving the US money* ... Meanwhile the original price tag of these is most likely taken into consideration and added to the stated value of the current "aid package", as well as subtracted from the recently approved total of $60b...

The first may have been to get the Russians to instinctively lay in the prone. These type of cluster munitions are more effective with the troops laying down and presenting more surface to the air bursting munitions.
