Good stuff. I needed a straight forward video about setting the audio levels, compression and limiter on the mini so when my mate and his companion are live on facebook, and he treaks the gain for a little more omph, I don't have to constantly tweak the audio and can concentrate on the video and monitor the stream.

The biggest problem I deal with (with the Minis) is noise and hum. Usually it’s alleviated using a stereo DI, yet today I did an install where the noise was still present; the mixer at the install is noisy, so that may be contributing despite successful installs with the Minis in the past. Switching the input to line level, I had no idea it was embedded in the software. Thank you for sharing!

Thanks for another great video. Just got our mini, and are loving it. One thing you might point out. We are using ours temporarily close up by the minister, with the Canon vid camera through the mini, and a Snowball Blue USB microphone set up right by a floor PA speaker for all of our audio pick up. The mic goes straight into the laptop. Well, you got me looking closer and indeed we had about a quarter second of delay of the video behind audio. There is an audio delay control that’s been added lately to the mini, but this won’t help. My ‘brilliant’ son said with a bit of a sneer, “just look in OBS, that’s very sophisticated software, it must have delay.” So, duh, I searched online about it and indeed there is a synch setting in the advanced controls for each audio source, which goes by milliseconds. I dialed in 250ms delay and for the first time our video has synchronized audio. Looks great. All of this is looking great thanks to you, and once we get back to “in person” we’ll move back to choir loft with a lock down camera shot from side wall per your recommendations. Looking forward to multi camera. Thanks again. - Tom

Perhaps I missed it, but it would have been good to cover that the line input is unbalanced (Step down transformer is needed to avoid noise and headroom issues) and not +4dBu. So if you don’t use a pair of transformers, you need to keep the level down going in, then bring it up via the mixer. High pass is a good suggestion and I think you really should only use the limiter. Compression would be applied at the board.

Just what I was looking for. A video that would take someone like myself, with little technical knowledge, step by step through the process. Love how you split the videos in to parts too. Quick question, can I get a similar result by using, what I’m told is an easier platform, something like Streamyard. If so, is it something you’d consider making a video on 😉

Nice video. I noticed the dynamics on our ATEM is VERY noisy! (high noise floor). Try engaging the compressor, expander or limiter with no audio passing into the ATEM. Now watch the audio meters - you will notice a lot of noise coming into them. I had to disable some of the dynamics as it noise was very audible during spoken word.

I'm trying to monitor my audio from the headphone jack on my Feelworld F5 monitor and can barely hear anything. Hi Bro Stephen , your video are great ! As many countries having lockdown for the pandemic of covid , our church has to progress to live stream. However , we facing the audio issue , where the buzzing sound is very loud from the beginning, once we reduce the volume, it will be slightly lower , but still existing . We are using blackmagic mini pro & direct plug in from our mixer.

Sounds like it could be a ground loop. First thing to determine is where is it coming from. If you solo the output on the mixer you are using to send to the Atem in headphones, do you hear the same buzz?

Great video! The most frustrating for livestreaming is the audio. We have a Y cable coming off the mixer, one side is connected to the mini, the other side is to plug in headphones to hear the mix prior to going through the mini. The mix sounds fine in the headphones but what gets livestreamed to FB is really quiet (even though the meters in the mini are hitting the yellow area) plus its really flat and "tinny* sounding. I'm realizing now the mini has an EQ lol. Is there anyway to turn off that eq?

Hi I really like your easy to understand tutorials. I used these settings yesterday at our church stream and everything went pretty well, except I now have a couple of questions I hope you will answer. First when I changed the mic 1 to line it took almost all my gain away. I had to go back and use a third setting our Atem Extreme has that is called mic or output in?? I also noticed that there is a screen that shows makeup gain. Is this what I should have used to make up the lost gain by using line setting? Second question I am wanting to use the lower thirds from Propresenter 7 but our church has an older computer that is using VGA to 3 projectors. Atem requires me to connect using HDMI which I don't have. Is there another way to connect this computer to the Atem? Thanks for all your work it is really helping us church volunteers!

A cheap Behringer mixer with unbalanced output works and it is better to use the HDMI output cause it has the better quality so you need a capturecard too. And it works with the old Adobe Flash Media Live Encoder for te coding to the internet. And if you are a CamTwist user it works with that too so this is a very cool product.

Yes you could. A couple compressors lightly compressing will sound better then one having to do more work. I'd set them both to be doing a little less reduction then with only one. Also, only one limiter at the end of the chain.

Important to note, if you're running 1/4" out to the ATEM. (This doesn't apply if you use XLR outputs.) The suggested dual 1/4" to 1/8" cable for sending audio from board to ATEM assumes your board is outputting *unbalanced* audio, and so it's appropriate to hook up to it a cable that has only two strips of metal visible on the plug, the Tip and the Sleeve (TS). TS cables send two different signals along two different wires: a ground signal on one, and the audio signal on the other. But often sound board outputs are *balanced* audio (which is much more resistant to interference than unbalanced audio, hence works over longer distances). And balanced audio requires a balanced cable containing *three* wires, with plugs consisting of three strips of metal: the Tip, a Ring, and Sleeve (TRS). A mono balanced signal breaks down into three signals in a balanced cable: a ground signal, then two other signals that encode the audio signal but in a manner overall resistant to interference. (XLR outputs will similarly transmit a mono balanced signal through their plug's three pins.) If you try using the recommended unbalanced dual 1/4" to 1/8" cable when your board outputs balanced audio, you're gonna have a bad time. If the balanced audio is "impedance balanced" (Tip is signal, Ring and Sleeve are ground), I believe it'll still work (but you're vulnerable to interference). But if it's "symmetrically" or perhaps "electronically" balanced (Tip is half signal, Ring is *inverted* half signal, Sleeve is ground -- so the actual signal is Tip minus Ring), audio will either be very degraded or just won't work, I'm not entirely sure which. If your board's outputs are balanced, you need to include a balanced-unbalanced conversion in the pipeline. Running two balanced 1/4" TRS to XLR cables from board to an ART CLEANBoxPro Dual-Channel Level Converter, then running a (ideally short) TRS-TRS microphone cable from that into the ATEM, should do the trick (I believe with the input set to Mic in ATEM settings). This will give you a stereo audio input, left/right corresponding to the two board outputs. If you only have one board output, you can just run it to the ART box, then in ATEM settings split the mic input and pan the active half to center and turn the unused half to zero.

Thanks for your great videos! Question: Will this device, and following the instructions you mentioned in this video help with following LKFS (or LUFS) monitoring requirements? I'm mixing through an A&H board into a complete audio 6 and into OBS and out to CASTR (via your CASTR tutorial, thanks). The worship music (keys, ac. guit. 3 vocals) sounded great on youtube but on FB it sounds fine for about 7 seconds then you can hear their compression kick in and the instruments sound like toys. My research is saying that for facebook I should be at around -16 LKFS. Will this device and instructions help with this problem? Or do you have another video that addresses this?

Hi, thanks for the very helpful video. I currently have 4 mics going into a firewire interface, and within Ableton Live, I apply EQ and compression and other bits such as limiting and deessers. Would I be able to plug the headphone output of my interface straight into the mic input of the Atem? I'm assuming there will be an audio delay as it's running through my DAW first, is there any delay compensation you're aware of within the Atem software? Many Thanks

Thanks for these videos. Lots of information for this old person to digest. I do have a question. We ordered the Atem Mini to live stream to FB. We are giving up the cellphone finally. We use Behringer XR18 mixer for the worship service. What is the best way to get the audio into the Mini and how. You mention stereo, we will be mono since we have only one AUX left. Is it at all possible to use the headphone jack output to the mic input on the Mini or the mic input of the camera? Side note... the worship team at your church is amazing! And yes, you are a master at getting the sound to show how amazing they are. Blessings from Poland.
@BallastMedia
@BallastMedia 4 жыл бұрын
You can run the one Aux output you have left from the XR18, use a cable like this (amzn.to/2UTbGHk) but only connect one of the 1/4" ends in to the mixer. What will happen is that you will then get audio on just one channel in to the Mini. BUT, in the settings in the Atem Control Software, click the gear icon at the lower left and go to the audio tab. There is a setting there to split the audio coming in to individual channels instead of "stereo." So then your one channel of audio will be routed to both Left and Right. (Thanks for the kind words!)

This way it leaves my full size mixer line level outputs jacks available for the powered monitors and other works... What do you think?
@BallastMedia
@BallastMedia 5 ай бұрын
Better not to use headphone output to drive line inputs. There is an impedance mismatch there that can cause distortion earlier then you'd normally have. If your mixer doesn't have enough line level outputs, just use a distributor, something like this can work: amzn.to/42Y6Smt

Thanks so much for this. Quick question. When one does the "save startup state," does that save the settings on the actual device itself (meaning I don't have to connect it to the software and "restore" settings? I've always saved the settings on the desktop via "save as" and have always restored such settings. The "save startup state" simply saves the specs on the hardware itself so I don't need the software to update those settings? Is that correct?

Yes, that's correct.

Hi Ballast, thanks for another great video! I learned a great deal from your sharing. I have two questions: 1. I've recently tried a live stream and it didn't turn out well. Found that it was caused by the cable from mix out (mono XLR) to mic in on Atem Mini (3.5 TRS Stereo). The live stream audio was ok when hearing using earpiece or headphone over mobile phone, but completely inaudible thr' the phone speaker out (some brands work ok though). Tried with another cable (like the one in your video) with 2x 1/4" jacks to 3.5mm TRS Stereo it works ok. How would I know if the cable is connected properly? Or can it be done like that in the first place? Whether I switch to Line or Mic in Atem Control Software was the same result. 2. My setup has a hissing background noise all the time (also shown thr' the audio meter). How to remove the noise? via hardware or software? Thank you very much!

I'm not sure what your question in #1 is, it sounds like you solved the problem by using the correct cable? You can monitor your audio in OBS on the computer if you need to verify it is coming in correctly. In Advanced Audio Properties turn the Monitor option to Monitor and Output. As far as #2, it sounds like a gain staging issue or impedance mis-match (mic and line level) or if could just be cheap quality components in the signal chain. Where is your audio coming from? What is the path to the Mini? How long is the cable?

@@BallastMedia Hi Ballast, thank you for another tip about monitoring audio via OBS. I was actually thinking of connecting a HDMI audio extractor to monitor the audio out from Atem Mini. Back to my question 1, yes after the failed streaming, I tried with the 2x 1/4" jacks (Alt Out from mixer A&H Q16 mixer) to 3.5mm stereo TRS cable (Atem Mini) and it's ok. My question is to learn more about the 'failed' cable (mono XLR (Mix Out from same mixer) to 3.5mm stereo TRS), I'm suspecting the vendor might have soldered it wrongly and wonder if there is a way to fix it so it works as well, 'cos in my mixer, I'll have greater control if I'm using mix out. Question 2: The audio came out from Allen & Heath Q16 mixer, via (either) of the two cables I mentioned above in Question1, into Atem Mini direct. Both cables have the hissing noise. The 2x 1/4" jacks cable is 5m and the Mono-XLR cable is 8m. Thank you!! :)

Hi! I think your videos are super good! I'm trying my Sony RX100 MKV and my GoPro for some live Dj stream so also I'm going from a mixer to input 1 in Atem Mini. My problem is that I have different delays with the different cameras. And I mean how they sync with audio. Is this something that you think I can do something about somehow? Thanks once again for the super good informative videos!

Try and get all the cameras to output the same video standard (resolution and frame rate) the difference in timing is because it's taking the Mini different amounts of time to deal with the different video standards from your cameras.

I have our Mini audio setup as you prescribed here. Spoken voice sounds great but music sounds like the notes are getting cut off and is choppy. Any suggestions?

How is the mix sent to the Mini? Sounds like you need to work on the levels to balance out the difference. Broadcast is a whole different animal when it comes to gain structure, we're used to having widely different levels in the house (50-70db for speaking and 70-100db for music) and that just doesn't translate to video. You need to work on your mix going in to the Mini to balance that out some. Compression can help a lot.

We were going to get an audio interface (Scarlett 2i2) to get a clean output into OBS from our mixer but would this be needed if were were to go with the ATEM (mixer to stem to computer & mix with ATEM)?
