Exploring the process of making traditional Athangudi tiles..These are handmade tiles, named after Athangudi, the village in Chettinad area of Tamil Nadu, where they originated and are made. These tiles are used in the Chettinad area for more than 100 years. Many families in the village depend on this craft of tile making for their livelihood. Most of the designs are inspired from the Victorian tiles used during the late 19th Century in United Kingdom. Athangudi Tiles are traditionally made from locally available materials such as river sand, cement and naturally occurring oxides, hence very sustainable. The design can be plain as well as exotic with floral patterns or as per the requirements and desire of the client. These tiles are hand-made, and there is no firing or use of electricity. It is made by a distinctive traditional process even though it can be produced through several mechanical processes. The more you walk on these tiles, the more sheen it gets. The non usage of it can decrease their shine.
