I get it. The GET ECU is like $900 and I just want KTM to give me a bike that runs properly for the mount I paid. You are not wrong. I’ve had about 6 of these TPI bikes now. This is the ONLY TPI bike that I’ve had that didn’t run right, and that sucks. In this video, I will go over the things I did to try to make the bike run correctly and eventually ended up here with this GET ECU.
Now I’ll have the ability to really fine tune the way the bike runs in a way that I’ve never been able to do even with carbureted bikes. How is that for turning lemons into lemonade?
Karen (my wife), Kaylee, Konnor Kase, and Kenzie (the kids) thank you for using these links. It is one of the ways we are supporting our family right now.

I’ve been running one on my 2018 250xcw for almost a year now. I didn’t have any issues with my bike but I wanted more tune ability after upgrading to a high compression head and a few other engine mods. I haven’t been disappointed...the bike runs amazing...like perfect. I only make small +/- 1-2% lean/rich changes for the different seasons. With the high compression head it rips. Really would be a game changer if KTM had tuning capability from the factory like some of the Yamahas do. I have the older software version. I haven’t bothered to upgrade since the overall fuel adjustment is all I really need. The whole WiFi thing is great for on trail tuning.

I purchased a 17 ktm 300 xc back in 17. After working through its issues and spending quite a bit of money, I was not impressed to say the least with ktm. We are very happy with the bike now but it cost right at $1500 to get it here. Since then I bought a Sherko 300 2t in 18. Very happy with that bike, haven’t had to do anything to it. Bought my daughter a beta X trader. That has been an excellent bike, we haven’t felt the needed to do anything to make it work properly. My son just bought an 18 gas gas 300 two-stroke, that is also an outstanding motorcycle and he hasn’t felt the need to change anything on that bike. I guess my point is, if you’re frustrated with the orange or white bikes, look at some of these other manufacturers. They are producing excellent motorcycles that work the way they should straight from the factory. Stop being so brand loyal. Just my two cents

This is where I think they may differ bike to bike. I've chased after my x trainer throttle/power endlessly. Love when it runs great, but it usually has me chasing it. Same with my Sherco trials. But then others with Sherco have zero issues. I think it's all a crap shoot if you get a good runner. I like both brands and would buy again, for sure. Am also thinking about buying a te 300 now, ha ha

Hey Kyle, hope you get this message, but I have a 250i TPI and I think I have the same issue as you. It has a rough spot close to the top end as it is revving. It almost acts like a "rev limiter" but runs perfect low and mid end until I go up a bit in revs slowly unless I really yank that throttle and it seems to bypass that. is that what you were having? acting like a "rev limiter" ? guessing I dont have a choice but the Athena ECU

Hey thanks for the update Kyle. Somethings I find a bit humorous..... Buy a 20 year old bike..... Not going to happen. Try and get parts for that is ridiculous. Let the crap fly over that..... And no matter what one says about they can get this that or whatever for a 20 yo bike is dreaming. Not to mention you WILL pay a premium price for the parts. Even pistons/rings from someone who still makes them. As to don't buy or it's not reliable...?? Really..?? It still works, it's just not working like he likes it to. I have had that on some bikes too. So after all this, I like the idea of the TPI if I was still living in AZ where elevation changes are pretty substantial. 2K in PHX to 7+K in Flagstaff. But I now live where the most I will see is MAYBE 2K difference. Checked out the Husky 300 and found some dealers still have 2019 TX (w/carb versions) for $2K to $2500 less than the 2020. And I can tune my carb so it would be in MY best interest to stay with something I don't need to finance so much to own. Again keep up the great videos!!!

Good video, cool product. You are a bit off however with respect to 2-stroke tuning and sensor requirements. The one big thing it looks like this motor is missing is exhaust temps. Otherwise, a MAF sensor is seldom used in 2 stroke application. To my point, your aftermarket ECU is not adding any sensors, its just giving you some agility with respect to tuning. My guess is you've got a bike with a faulty injector. You are band-aiding the issue with this ECU. (its probably not completely closing) I work for a turbo company where we are able to tune stock sled ECUs to work with a turbo. This shows you how powerful these ECUs really are in the hands of a right tuner. Again, you've got SOMETHING wrong with the bike, be it the fuel pump regulator is faulty, injector not closing all the way/slightly shorting out, bad wiring harness etc. These maps aren't something that work and then don't work. All that said, having the agility of the ECU you upgraded to is really cool, and should be stock from the factory IMO.

i've noticed a bogging at mid/high rpm on my 2019 250 tpi. after reading forums and finding a guy experiencing the same on his new 300 it seems like after changing and replacing just about all he could from spark plug to sensors the only thing that made the bike run as it should was a GET ignition system. KTM told him the poor running of the bike was "just a characteristic of the bike" and there was nothing wrong. People shouldn't have to spend close to £1000 on an aftermarket ignition system to get a bike running correctly

Has anyone heard of issues with the 2019 300XC-w cold seizing on startup and pre-mature wear on the cylinder wall after only a few hours? Another website with a so-called KTM guru I watched had a cure for this issue by changing the in-tank filter to a larger size and adding 1oz. of oil per gallon to the gas. My question is will this ECU cure that issue also, or would I need to go ahead and do this mod too? Man, this crap is getting expensive especially since I just recently had to change the starter motor for $400+ at the dealer.

This is interesting, I had the same exact problem with my 2019 300 TPI 6-Days but found the power valve spring tension to be off. I fixed it myself after 2-trips to the dealer with no luck. To be more detailed, the power valve spring had too much tension on it and wouldn't open at the correct time the throttle was adding more fuel. Once I backed off the spring tension (1/4 turn counter-clockwise) it cleaned everything up. Now the power valve opens earlier and is able to burn the additional fuel it was getting at that throttle position. Hope this makes sense.

Now the aftermarket does a good job of filling dead spots that the manufacturers can't do. But I'm a tech and when we had the KTM brand and I know what they put into the bikes they make i have a question for you. When you took your bike to the two dealers did they offer to contact KTM, open a case? We had KTM for about two years, we dropped them cus we could not compete with the otter dealers that were in the area but I still love the brand. But when I was working on a bike and could not figure something out I would contact KTM for more insight. They have no problem working with the dealers. With the race teams they have and the work they do with the dealers is how they make their bikes better.

@@billymcculloch-hardenduro2755 The criticism that started the 100hr test was that Kyle would put 10-15 hours on a bike and move on to the next, never exposing any flaws in the bike. This is the first tpi bike he has put more hours on and now he feels he has to spend more money on it just to keep riding it. Seems obvious to me that having to take it to multiple dealerships to diagnose and then spend an extra $900 because it didnt run right means there was a problem that prevented him from getting back on the trail... not able to ride your new $10k bike = unreliable

That’s the crappy thing I’ve learned with KTM. Buy a 10k bike but the mikuni sucks so you spend 500$ on a lectron. Then suspension if your outside the weight limit, bike protection etc....Now you buy an even more expensive tpi and you need a new ecu. Such bs. I love my KTM but after all the money I’ve dumped into it I’m not getting rid of it for a long time. Just glad mine is carbureted.

I'd suggest not switching bikes every 40 hours and instead tuning one and sticking with it. Changing the CDI alone won't do anything nor will switching the exhaust because the head design is shit to begin with. Look up twostrokeperformance; custom head+CDI are just under 600 bucks. It will fix all your issues.

They don't have a clue because they are too busy trying to satisfy European Union EPA regs which are basically working to eliminate the 2 stroke. That's the goal. But I guess they will still build and sell 2 strokes if the customer doesn't mind a very short life motor.

So many 'Wows' with this video. Firstly, good old KTM doing R&D using their customers. As Kyle says, some run well, lots don't - the customer is the Guinea pig. Second, why would KTM not fix the bike? Because they don't care about their customers, they got your money and it's goodbye. Next up, the GET products work well, BUT it should not be something an owner should have to buy simply to get a standard bike to run properly - again, shame on KTM! Next Kyle, while the tuning process is different for a 2 stroke engine, all the required sensors and precessing power is right there on the bike already. The problem lies in KTMs bungled mapping software for these engines, simply not enough time spent tuning at the factory and sloppy variability in build quality. The standard ECU has all it needs to run any single cylinder engine - Coolant temp, air temp, throttle position, manifold pressure air temperature and crank location. From these sensors, assuming the mapping has been set up correctly, the ECU can work out how dense and how much air is flowing and add fuel to suit. You said yourself the other bikes ran fine. It's not a lack of hardware, it's an individual bike fault. I'm sure that the GET ecu will get around the fault in your bike, but the fault is still there. I'm willing to bet there's a leak, a sensor that is reading inside it's upper and lower 'safe ranges' (so does not set a code) but not the correct value for the actual parameter being measured or some other similar issue that has been overlooked.

I bought a new 2019 WR 450F, the U.S models don't come with a CCU, competition ECU, or the dual map switch on the bars. If I was to install all that stuff myself via GYTR accessories, it would cost me over $600. $600 more that I'll have to spend on a bike that already cost me $10,300 all because of the state of Commiefornia. If I was Donald Trump, I'd give California back to Mexico, and then put a border fence around it.

@south agreed. I've worked in manufacturing long enough to know that if you wait until all the bugs are worked out you never ship it. What is troubling is that KTM isn't fixing the field issues or giving hope to those who are having trouble (from what I've read). Only KTM knows the exact % that are struggling with issues. What probably happens here is that KTM was forced to get this out fast and weren't allowed to make it a changeable ECU. Or there are just some lemons out there...who knows.

CCP sensor, not all bikes are affected but some are. CCP sensors were found to be bad from the factory. Little note, if your bike doesn't run right, don't ride it !! You wanted to be able to tune your bike this is misleading people thinking KTM sent you a bad ECU. The Get ECU can work around the bad CCP sensor so you think you fixed the problem. My $.02 worth for anyone looking to buy a TPI bike. If it doesn't run smooth as butter, something is off. Find a tuner dealer not a parts replace until fixed dealer.
