I certainly don't view Rand as a god, but I do see her views on markets and government as intelligent, well thought out, and ultimately ...... obvious and self-evident. She shouldn't be viewed as dogmatic perfection, but as a resource for learning the interaction between people and government, I find her work invaluable.

Two things. First, the left, communist, socialist, Woke, democrat attacks her with Ad Hominem fallacies. The source is irrelevant, only the objective reality matters. Second, the predatory greed rapist republicans say "I am a fan of Rand" without even a SPECK of understanding that SHE DESPISED ALL CONSERVATIVES. People are super hasty and super shallow. She only wrote a small amount of Fiction, but wrote many more NON fiction books explaining how her philosophy works. The heart rending thing is, she never said, HERE is exactly the practical blueprint to get rid of the conservative parasites and the liberal parasites. If it were possible, Galt's Gulch would already exist. The reality is, democracy cannot work. Almost everyone is ignorant, fearful, conformist and with zero talent or value. Only a parasite culture works for them. What troubles me about Rand is the MYTH that life is a meritocracy. It very much is NOT. Rich people get that way through lies, corruption, evil. This fuels the fire for the socialists and communists, who only offer something much worse.

Hank started out in the mines but did not stay there. He was brilliant and knew where he was going. He created the companies Rearden Coal, Rearden Limestone, Rearden Ore and Rearden Steel. Hank became a person who enjoyed fine things, but was totally capable of doing any job in his company. I think the new Hank portrays those qualities well, from what I've seen. He was a doer and that's who Dagny fell in love with. Dagny would not fall in love with an effete.

Great answer! I agree - reading the book and learning about Hank Reardon's past makes this actor more in keeping with what you'd expect from such a background. Other than the trappings of wealth, I always got the impression that Hank Reardon was spectacularly intelligent, and a little rough around the edges.

Short answer: They didn't have much of a choice. The original actors weren't contracted for future films, because Part I didn't have the funding for that, and because they weren't even sure they'd have enough money to make Part II & III. By the time Part II was underway, so much of the original cast was already on other projects that it made more sense to just start from scratch. There are also some rumors that they want a new cast for III - as a stylistic choice.

cont. - That is the adult mindset. The nanny state assumes you are incapable of such decisions and therefore is obligated to act. Along the way, such insinuation results in ever increasing loss of freedom and ultimately domination. It is the very idea that freedom is a shades of grey concept that ultimately results in its loss.

I understood his argument, and it has never been a serious one. ANY law you create has the potential to be harmful, but it also has the potential to be good. Some of the American Constitution was harmful, like the 3/5ths compromise. Nobody favors some mystical 'unrestrained democracy' because EVERYONE wants their own rights protected. We want democracy as a way of reciprocally protecting each other's rights and improving life. Your neighbors aren't out to get you. Criminals are firstly victims.

The one thing I've ever heard Milton Friedman say that I thought was a trifle unfair was when he accused Ayn Rand, although acknowledging her through her writing (he never met her) to be brilliant, of being rigid and demanding fealty from her followers. While that was undoubtedly true, Ayn, unlike Milton, was born in Russia and experienced the horrors of totalitarianism. Unsurprisingly, her sense of urgency in the pursuit of freedom was thereby heightened.

I bought the first movie DVD from the "Previously Viewed" rack at the rental store. By the pristine state the disc was in, I believe that nobody had rented the disc. I was attracted to the movie because it is one of the very few pro-railroad movies. I thought the producers but in a very good effort for the limited budget they had (really liked the music). Movie # 2 was supplied by a friend who had access to torrent downloads, and after seeing it, thought it was not worth paying for a legitimate copy. Movie # 3 I saw the whole thing on KZfaq, and after seeing it, thought it not worth bothering downloading even an illegitimate version to see again.

No I wasn't aware that Hayek had produced psychology work but it doesn't surprise me. I agree that economics is a social science. I also agree that mathematics can be useful when plotting projections or trends in the realm of finance. The problem is that mathematics are a rigid discipline that, by the more adept practitioners, can be warped to yield any result required. It is a tool not an oracle. Psychology is > mathematics where economics is concerned.

You're probably right about the logistical problems. It happens a lot in the film industry. People can't wait around forever for a project to start up. Personally the cast changes don't bother me. 3. Freedom doesn't have to be a 'shades of grey' concept. The principle is far from being grey. However, you cannot confuse the principle with how society or yourself manifest a definition of it. All generations live in a time of privileged understanding; privileged in that we have more history to look back upon. If you define 'privilege' as finally having the one true manifestation of an ideal principle--you don't understand what is (arguably) the most import lesson of history.
@xtop23
@xtop23 11 жыл бұрын
I agree that mathematics can be utilized to create models, that trend and project into the future possible outcomes, using historical data as a basis for extrapolation. Mathematics fails when events of import shift a given paradigm i.e. technological leaps ( the automobile / flight / the internet / space travel / weaponry ). The understanding of how people react in a given situation, when applied to great enough numbers, would more often yield correct predetermination.

You're welcome. I didn't actually find your posting that difficult to understand, It simply had the vibe of an intentional "high-browing". As far as your comment, "Randianism tends toward...", I always found Rand's work to be a bit of the "when all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail" variety, to read. She tends to belabor points of interest here and there. I do however, agree with much of what she espouses where government and free markets are concerned.

4. (last) Actually, the mathematics doesn't fail. A model can describe the things you mentioned--the choice of what is the proper model to use is based on the 'social' area and not the mathematical science area of economics. Generalizations about this social area may yield models and even a narrowing of ideals can produce greater accuracy. But make no mistake, without the math economics is just as predictive as history or anthropology--perhaps useful but not a science in-itself.

You address one of my main gripes with her work..... it is extremely rare to find people with that singular a purpose in real life and even those, I'm sure, have much more to them than most perceive. Her main characters often lack depth. They pursue a goal of such overriding desire that it excludes all else. While I'm sure that does exist somewhat IRL, it detracts from the reading experience when characters aren't as well rounded as they could be.
@geekonomist

You use the word depth, when you mean the word vice. Some of her heroes have none of your "depth" , the others of heroes have a forgiveable few vices. They are shown to struggle all of their lives chapter after chapter , but in the end their frustrations are not what you want. You want failure, pain and death. Stop giving vice a dimension, and you will see that you can look out for virtues, and even aspire to them.

1. Many ways to conceptualize government other than 'use of force' or 'threat of force' and that is my point--not that force is absent from government or that systemic constraints are unnecessary and/or always serve their purpose. However, assuming a negative connotation of 'force' and ignoring the fact that modern government (supposedly) aims representational of multi faceted society at large (vs. set for individuals by individuals) constrains understanding of how the body systemically acts.

What mathematics are necessary to understand the theory that government is force and that entities built upon a foundation of force inevitably pursue goals that increase the ability to utilize said force? It is in areas such as this that her work is invaluable and useful to the reader in the understanding of interactions between the government and its citizenry. As far as econ goes, mathematics can only be somewhat effective when the underlying data is accurate and interpreted objectively.

2/(2 or 3) Even in physics, math can be used and abused. It isn't pure mathematics, it's applied mathematics. By this, it is difficult not to produce bias (such is even often foreshadowed in the models chosen before analysis even begins). Also, econometrics relies largely on historical data sets in order to produce said models--by this it can be largely post-hoc and even more prone to personal and/or cultural biases.

There's firstly a distinction made between human rights and civil rights. Secondly, there's a distinction between civil rights and political or social rights. Human rights are things which are ensured because no sane person would ever deny them, e.g. food, water, health. In the modern time, freedom from slavery fits into this category Civil rights are things which codify the type of society in which we desire to live, as the American Constitution did Democracy is about the other rights

His papers in psych. were ahead of their time and are worth reading. No, psychology is not more useful than mathematics in understanding economics. In order to get a psych degree that counts as a BSc and not a BA, you have to take Statistics (and sometimes even higher math) and have a background in calculus. If you're relying more on social psychology than you are on econometric analysis--you're in the social part and not the science part of economics.

Sorry, incorrect. It isn't new forms of mathematics that convey deeper understanding of economic issues; it's more deeply informed (or differently informed) social models of using mathematics and applying it to economic issues. New models are frequently developed, but it is astoundingly rare that an area of pure mathematics finds its way into applied use Pure mathematics isn't akin to logic and cannot be reduced to it. Also, economic models frequently fail--where were you these past 5 years? lol

I'm fairly versed in economics, but I subscribe to the Austrian viewpoint rather than the Keynesian ( it isn't really, but that's who has received credit since Nixon's presidency / it's in reality a substantially bastardized form ). I'm less concerned with the mathematics than the underlying psychology involved when I state that I believe Rand is spot on ( with regard to markets and government ). Much of what I read in A.S. and The Fountainhead is happening in real time today.

Check out "The Sociology of the Ayn Rand Cult" by Murray Rothbard, easily googled. I didn't mind her novels so much--they're pulp but they're fairly entertaining. She (mis)labels her work as 'Romantic' in order to sidestep certain critiques of her work/ideology. If you put some personal effort into researching ARI, the cultish nature of the movement will blow your mind--try ariwatch[DOT]com. If you buy into anything it can be a source of positive feeling motivation, credit yourself, not Rand.

Breaking my rule (but I will answer). It isn't so much that the statement itself can be proven false (by the definition of 'oath' it sure is an oath), you'll have to be a little more specific--it's based on one of the principles Randianism pretends to...once again, the truth-value of this statement doesn't entail the consistency or actuality of Randianism, it isn't a formalized statement...we can discuss the merit of the principle if you wish (and tie it to the emotive appeal of Randianism).

Ahh, I missed this one...just as you probably missed a couple of my comments. Let's try to keep to a 1 comment per response maximum in order to make sure a proper discussion is taking place. Well, yeah--all of those things are true (in the sense you mean them to be true) but they don't entail the consistency of Randianism any moreso than evolution entails positive directionality.

cont. - To deny that, is to admit that you haven't yet taken a look at the world unclouded by preconception. My earlier postings were addressing the lack of thorough character development that detracts from the enjoyment in reading her novels. I must also admit that often the narrative is bogged down, exhaustive, and long winded. Her characters do tend to belabor a point. She is prone to hyperbole, but I credit this to her attempt at driving a point home.
