Throughout this engaging conversation, we tackle various topics related to holistic treatments for OCD, anxiety, depression, eating disorders, and GI issues. Dr. Julia Britz shares her expertise and insights on how to address these conditions from a natural, holistic perspective.
Naturopathy, alternative medicines used to treat mental health issues, and overall mental health awareness are all widely discussed topics in today’s medical world. Dr. Julia Britz and Debbie Nelson take a deep dive into how these topics are all gaining more visibility in the medical world today.
Naturopathy
As mental health awareness and visibility have steadily increased, there are more conversations beginning about what it means to treat mental health illnesses with alternative forms of medicine and therapies. One of the most essential holistic forms of treatment that has been spotlighted recently is naturopathy. Naturopathic medicine focuses on the body as a whole during the healing and recovery process, and it is a wonderful example of a holistic approach to care The main principle of naturopathy is that the body has the innate ability to heal itself while undergoing supplemental wellness treatments.
One of the guiding philosophies of naturopathy when treating mental health illnesses is the rejection of prescription drugs. In fact, many people who seek naturopathic doctors were once working with other clinicians who prescribed pharmaceutical medications, often causing more symptoms than they addressed. Now, these people are looking to stop using their prescriptions and find other ways to mitigate their mental health symptoms. It’s important to note that those who are exploring alternative forms of recovery or mental health management should not wean themselves off a medication without a doctor’s supervision, and working with naturopathic doctors can help them manage both their physical and mental health through a more holistic lens.
Disorder vs. Disease
One of the most significant obstacles for people experiencing mental health symptoms is how to define what they struggle with. For the most part, illness can be categorized as either a disorder or a disease. Diseases have a definite cause and can usually be treated with medicine or pharmaceutical treatments, whereas disorders do not have a defined cause and thus cannot be treated with medication. In addition, there usually is not a clear-cut way to mitigate disorders, which is why people often struggle with disorders for a significant amount of time.
For example, when a person is diagnosed with a disease such as pneumonia, there is a clear course of treatment to cure the ailment. However, if someone is diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), there is no one “cure.” Therefore, prescription medication is often not the best option for people with disorders. Naturopathy works in tandem with the body and mind to find the root of the issue rather than address symptoms at a surface level with medication.
A Holistic Alternative Medical Practice
The human body is a multi-factorial system, and naturopathic doctors create courses of treatment specific to the individual that depend on lifestyle, clinical nutrition, herbal medicine, and light therapy. Naturopathy utilizes both the mental and physical sides of the person to heal and help them live well. It does not focus on individual aspects of the person or illness but rather looks at the human as a whole and facilitates the body’s innate ability to heal itself.
Science evolves every day, and as more research is done into treatments for mental health issues, people have more options for how they choose to mitigate their illnesses. Naturopathy is one of many alternative medical practices that have become a more attractive option for people today.
