Ecuadorian police just raided the Mexican embassy to arrest former Vice president Glass, violating the Vienna Convention. This assault on the Mexican embassy is being roundly condemned and has already resulted in Mexico and Nicaragua breaking off diplomatic ties. Glass, Rafael Correa’s vice president, was a corrupt politician and a fugitive from the law. However, this was possibly the worst possible way to take him into custody. This short video about Ecuador brought to you by the fall off the map channel.

@@robertozc9827 I agree with you. My point about Naboa falling into a trap is that I think there were better ways to capture Glass. I don’t think Naboa fully understood the consequences of raiding the embassy and how it will negatively impact Ecuador for many years. Regardless of what leaders are saying publicly about it, what matters more is what the various diplomats think. Diplomats around the world are angry, and these are the people that do the work behind the scenes. Think of them as like the people that cook your food in a restaurant. You don’t want them to hate you. They might be friendly to your face but they’ll do terrible things to your food.

Ecuador is doing its own version, but as small as Ecuador is, it’s way bigger and more strategically important than El Salvador. El Salvador beat the cartels, in part, because they had the benefit of surprise. In Ecuador, the cartels were already waiting and expecting a government crackdown. There was no element of surprise and they were able to sit back and wait until the new president took office before making their move. In Ecuador the government is weak and deeply in debt while the cartels are well funded and well organized. In El Salvador the president had the luxury of time to purge corruption from the courts and National Assembly before going after the cartels. In Ecuador the president is fighting the cartels while handicapped by a corrupt legal and legislative system than is plagued by politicians that are owned by the cartels.

I do not think that this will have an effect on Noboa's support. I also, do not think Ecuador's major trade partners will do anything. @FallofftheMap
@FallofftheMap 3 ай бұрын
Yes, but the Vienna Convention also stipulates that the remedy is the international criminal court, not committing a second violation of the convention by raiding the embassy. Unfortunately, waiting for the ICC would have allowed Glass to escape to Mexico, so the legal remedy wasn’t viable. The solution would have been to allow him to leave the embassy for his arranged escape flight to Mexico and then taken him at the airport. It would have been risky because he might have escaped, but that risk would have been preferable to this situation.

@@FallofftheMap This is not about feelings but facts. Mexican President made a similar between the last Ecuadorian election murder of one candidate and how that situation affected the final result to the benefit of one of the parties who happened to be the most affected by such a situation. In Mexico, a couple of weeks ago, a candidate running for a small City was murdered. The local government was trying to make the same Ecuador did in Mexico, trying to affect the entire elections that will be held on June 2nd (the largest elections in Mexican history). AMLO NEVER insulted the current President of Ecuador, never accused him of being responsible for the situation, never emitted any opinion about him or the situation. He only spoke the facts. In any case, if Ecuador had something to complain about, they skipped all diplomatic procedures. The same happened with the asylum of Glas granted by Mexico after 4 months of investigation and several diplomatic tramits. You seem to believe that the current Mexican government is corrupt. Maybe you only watch specific media and learn about partial and manipulative Media. Emmiting opinions without contrasting information sources, especially if you have no idea of Latin American cultures is like saying that all Americans, Canadians, and UK citizens are ignorant, and drug addicts. As we would say in the Marine Corps, 'Ecuador screwed the pooch on this one." I am a Naboa , but I don't believe that the "juice was worth the squeeze" on this. Given the history between the Correístas and the anti-Correístas, I understand that this would seem like a victory against corruption and bribery (not as though that has not been inherent in Ecuadorian politics), but in this case the cost was too high - the tradeoff wasn't worth it. As Ecuador has been seeking support against the cartels to combat the internal crime, this breach of diplomatic protocol is marking it as a pariah (and understandably so). As a resident, I am curious (and anxious) to see how this will work out. The one nation that cannot condemn Ecuador for this breach of the Vienna Convention is Israel, which bombed the Iranian embassy compound in Damascus days ago.

@eps0m1066 0 seconds ago I get that your a big fan of Ecuador and maybe even its current govt, but you have completely and totally missed the point. An embassy or any other diplomatic property is legally viewed by all other countries as the ‘territory’ of that same country, regardless of where it is located. You CANNOT under any circumstance enter this property without the ‘express permission of the country to which it belongs’. Thats it, end of story. Finish. Every country (until very recently) has firmly believed in that No1 golden rule. It does NOT matter what the reasons may be in wanting to enter that property, you cannot enter under any circumstances without the permission of that country. Every country knows this, and has believed and supported this rule. This is exactly as if Ecuador had mounted an armed attack within Mexico. There’s no difference because this IS legal Mexican territory. I know overall the world is going crazy right now, but this takes it to a whole new level! If Mexico chose to take military action in retaliation for this, they would be entirely justified under international law because this act of invading an embassy was a deliberate military act against another sovereign nation. Ecuador must be fully condemned and face very severe consequences from the world community for what it has done.
@FallofftheMap

This is not quite true. There is a relatively long history of attacks, raids, and violations of embassies around the world. While the vast majority were not committed by a nation, but rather a mob or terrorist group, Vietnam, Russia, Peru, Venezuela, Iran, and Israel have all commuted deliberate direct attacks on embassies. Also, it is a common misconception that an embassy is sovereign territory of the nation. www.wcnc.com/article/news/verify/verify-no-us-embassies-arent-considered-us-territory/507-59986c66-c52e-452a-9002-562116b540bf

@@user-eo9qy7qj2jthese are emotional reactions from emotional people who do not reason well. Politics is best carried out cold-bloodedly and rationally. There is no advantage here. If Noboa indeed did this to gain popular support, this is pure manipulation…the lowest common denominator is not fit to rule.

it's against international law. You also see footage of pushing a embassy member of staff to the floor. Equador shot themselves in the foot. Regardless of how much they wanted this guy. It was a political stunt, that has back fired. They should have used political channels rather than trying to flex muscles.

Both sides broke “international law.” The legal remedy was not effective, so Ecuador went outside the law. The consequences are purely theatrical
