520KM in less than 19 hours, through three of Japans largest cities. That’s the goal...But how does one prepare for that?
As part of this week's video, I want to share with you my final 7 days of preparation before undertaking this famous ultra cycling challenge. You’ll see how I suffered from jet lag, the special people who came to Japan to cheer for me and what my expectations were for the record attempt. As we traveled from Tokyo to Osaka, I got my first taste of the distance and the chaotic cities I’ll need to cross.
The prospect of taking on the challenge and looking to crush the previous Tokyo to Osaka Cannonball Route record had me in high spirits! Stay tuned as the documentary detailing the record attempt itself is dropping in a few day's time. Will I make it or not?

Awesome, can’t wait for the record attempt video to drop! QQ on your equipment: this was a short trip, but do you take your chain wax setup with you when travelling? Trying to understand the practicality before committing 😊
@jackultracyclistofficial
@jackultracyclistofficial Жыл бұрын
Good question! I took two chains, I saved one freshly waxed one for the record and used the other for the rides in and around the record. Kept the bike clean, operating smoothly and fuss free. Highly recommend 👌🏽👌🏽

@@jackultracyclistofficial good stuff! So on a longer trip, would you just take your Cyclowax “cooker” with and treat them as usual?

I was lucky enough in 2008 to spend 10 days in Japan. There is in my experience so far no other place like it. I can only describe it as an Alien Planet. It realigns your ideas of normality IMO - such a hectic country that equally is so much about balance and inner peace - almost seems at odds with itself but harmonious at the same time. Veyr different between the cities and the mountains - we spent time up in Ojiya and Nagaoka as well as Tokyo. I would go back as i would like to see the south - Hiroshima, Koyoto etc.

I love your point about the contrast and couldn’t agree more. There’s so much chaos and yet, there’s still so much harmony and flow and peace, it’s quite amazing!! The only place I’ve been that has this crazy mix of chaos and peace is Bhutan, but then that’s completely different in so many other ways. Definitely keen to get back there myself mate. Lots to explore!

Got me interested although it's a pretty daunting ride! I rode the first third of your route as part of my Festive500. Maybe the 'quietest' part of the route too but even it was busy and my buddies and I had a couple of truck side mirrors perilously close to our heads! Would also be torn between a weekday or weekend attempt. Weekends in Japan usually mean more traffic but can also be less trucks...
@jackultracyclistofficial
@jackultracyclistofficial Жыл бұрын
Absolutely man! Go for it! My suggestion would be to tackle it on a Sunday to avoid the ‘work’ traffic. The cities seemed to be a lot quieter on weekends as opposed to the week days 👌🏽👌🏽

I’ve spent quiet a bit of time in Tokyo (and a little in Osaka), I dont think think it’s complete chaos like you keep saying and there are so many cyclists in Tokyo with traffic being very respectful. Maybe Girona is just very sleepy so anywhere in Asia will be a huge culture shock.
