Ductile iron is not a single material but part of a group of materials which can be produced with a wide range of properties through control of their microstructure. The common defining characteristic of this group of materials is the shape of the graphite. In ductile irons, graphite is in the form of nodules rather than flakes as in grey iron. Whereas sharp graphite flakes create stress concentration points within the metal matrix, rounded nodules inhibit the creation of cracks, thus providing the enhanced ductility that gives the alloy its name.

What made you want to double ground it ?

Welcome to my world. I located cast iron main for 20 years. Weak tone and you are correct. I could only go about 100-150 feet and then drop on it. Wish I knew about double ground. Btw I have switched to a new less stressful position at the treatment plant and 6 months later the city has still not found a candidate for the locator job! 😂 other back up staff has been filing in and they are swamped!

It's wonderful to hear that you're enjoying your new position, and it's great to hear from you, my brother! Locating cast iron pipes can be quite challenging, despite what others may claim. Sometimes, I find it more effective to rely on dowsing rods and skill rather than solely depending on the equipment. Considering the circumstances, perhaps moving to New York to pursue that position could be a viable option. What are your thoughts on the matter? 🤫

It would be interesting to see how the RD would go if you had grounded the water hydrant further down the road as well as the one where you've set up your transmitter. This helps direct the signal, especially in congested areas and reduces the impact of the electromagnetic field being distorted (I note you have other utilities painted on the ground nearby). Please try this if you get some spare time.

Side note- hydrants are not the greatest hook up due to gaskets and concrete thrust blocks but sometimes it all you can do. Or use a valve wrench and magnet 🧲👍 believe it or not I used the power sweep a lot. It works. 👍

Thanks for the tip. Power mode mains do work at times but the water service sings when using power mode.
